Beggar's Opera Theme

In my opinion, the theme in Beggar's Opera seems to be operating on self-interest. As the old saying goes, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, is basically the position that most of the characters take on.

One of the most prominent examples of this is with Macheath. He portrayed a prime minister of the times on one hand and on the other he was a masterful thief who was occasionally caught but always managed a skillful escape. On page 58, Gay shows that Macheath is acting for the "gangs" self interest when he says, "Business cannot go on without him. He is a man who knows the world, and is a necessary agent to us…" Gay also shows other characters that convey this theme through this method. Peachum being the next most prominent character speaks this way many times as if he knows no other way. A few of these examples are listed on pages 575, 578 and 581. "…Besides, here the law allows us no reward; there is nothing to be got by the death of a womanexcept our wives." "…how shall we be safe? Are we not then in her husband's power?" "And Macheath may hang his father and mother-in-law, in hope to get into their daughter's fortune." Mrs. Peachum also shows this self-interest. "…he's [Bob Booty] a favorite customer of mine. 'Twas he made me a present of this ring." (576). On page 581 she says, "Then all the hopes of our family are gone forever and ever!"

Sweet innocent Polly even gets to utter words deemed full of self-interest. Just after Mr. and Mrs. Peachum declare their self-interest on page 581, Polly breaks in with "…But, I love him." Again she does this on 584, " But I love him, Sir how then could I have thoughts of parting with him?" Even a character with so few lines such as Matt is seeded with this theme on page 588. "…I know about this time there will be passengers upon the Western Road, who are worth speaking with." Another prime example is Lockit on page 56 when he makes sure the contract is directly split between him and Peachum. Vixen is quoted as a theme spreader too. On 5, "…as we were all assisting, we ought all to share alike."

These are just a sampling Gay's theme of self-interest. There are far more to inference. These are just the most direct in relaying self-interest in the theme

Order makes a society run in harmony, and without it there would be chaos. It comprises of laws which the people in the society have agreed and accepted. A society is a group of people that live similar lives. They obey the rules and regulations made by the society and often support each other, which helps them keep the order. In Tomorrow When the War Began 7 teenagers go out on a camping trip but when they return home they find their society, which they've lived in their whole lives, broken down and stolen. They are forced to flee and create their own society or they too will be captured and imprisoned like the rest of the town. In the Shawshank Redemption, Andy, a married, successful man with a bright future is sentenced to 50 years in jail for the murder of his wife and her lover. He is then forced to live in a new society with a new harsh freedom less order. These media are linked by the sudden change of order & society and how they adjust to it. When Elle in Tomorrow When the War Began is sitting there watching the stars, it creates a peaceful scene which symbolizes the teenagers society they originally lived in. Then came a humming noise which Elle quotes as "artificial," being the noises of the planes carrying the invaders. The artificial noise informs the reader that it doesn't belong to the peaceful scene, symbolizing the invaders arrival. At this point the society that the teenagers have been living in has just entirely changed, yet they are all still unaware. They are going to have to soon adjust to an aspect of life they've never been exposed to, survival. In The Shawshank Redemption there is a similar scene also symbolizing the point of change to the characters order & society. When Andy walks into Shawshank the old, heavy doors close behind, thus symbolizing the end of his society which his lived in his whole life, and the beginning of his new harsh, dismal life in his new society. These scenes link by using the technique of symbolism. The concept of an abrupt change from a peaceful, happy society running in harmony to a rough, unpleasant society is used in the text and the film. In conclusion these media have concentrated mainly on informing the viewer & reader of the enormous impact of changing order & society can be to a person.

Joseph Conrad was born no ordinary man; rather, Conrad was born an idealistic aristocrat who educated himself into a very enlightened man. He was a strong man in his morals that believed that "the object of life was the perfection of individual conduct- the education of man's spirit." Individuals that knew Conrad stated that he "seemed to understand everything." In his perpetual understanding and search for perfection he came to the conclusion that "the sane view of life is not a matter of compromise." Conrad believed "every work of art had a profound moral significance;" therefore, he consistently wore himself thin trying to arrange his words in such a way as that they would "glow." Conrad would sometimes work so vigorously that he would become sickly with a fever. Conrad also never allowed himself to rely on memory for the setting of his story because he thoroughly believed in the "absorption, and the collection, of on the spot characteristic detail." Because of his sometimes blinding commitment to his work, Conrad is sometimes said to be " the undeviating artist, unsatisfied, treating his novels as so many surmounted obstacles on the path of an endless quest; impatient of admiration- as of so much else-yet never in doubt of the essential truth of his vision." Conrad once said, "I can't get anything out of myself quickly, it takes me a year of agony to make something like a book- generally longer. And, my dear fellow, when it is done there are not more than twenty people who understand." Perhaps that is the reason Conrad was well on his way to 40 before he published his first book. Although it is sometimes questioned whether "Conrad would have gained both in credit and in popularity if he had written what he had to written without incessant care for appearances." His stories most often developed into "political parables" filled with symbolism, although he never includes a plot; rather Conrad uses one of his "inextricable tricks of art, bye which suspense is scarcely concerned with actions, but with a gradually revealed knowledge of what might have happened in the making of a man…" " In General, Critical esteem of Conrad's work has scarcely wavered, few judges today would seek to set aside Dr. Leavis's verdict that Conrad is the outstanding exemplar in generation of the English novel's "great tradition."

The movie "My Fair Lady" satisfies the four elements that define fine arts. These elements include music, dance art and drama. Although the movie is set in a different time period, it still manages to successfully convey the important facets of fine arts.

The movie "My Fair Lady" is a 160's musical, originally adapted from a play, Pygmalion. There are several different types of music included in the film. For example, one of the romantic songs is "I Could Have Danced All Night", which is sung by Eliza Doolittle. While there are quite a few romantic songs, the movie also includes witty songs, such as "I'm Just an Ordinary Man". Overall, the music in the film was excellent and made it enjoyable for the viewer.

The movie also presents very strong dramatic tendencies. The actors do an excellent job in bringing the original Broadway play to life. Audrey Hepburn, for example, does an excellent job playing the young, illiterate flower girl Eliza Doolittle. In addition, Rex Harrison does and amazing job playing the professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins. Everything from the plot, to the costumes, to the background music, adds to the drama of the film.

The movie also demonstrates art through several sets, costumes and lighting. Art is very easily recognizable and plays an important role in the movie. For Example, the interior of Higgins's house, such as the library with its sliding ladder, represents a popular style of architecture for the time. Also, the difference in Eliza's outfits beginning from when she was a poor flower girl, to when she became a duchess, demonstrates the different levels of style in society.

There are a few dance numbers involved in the movie "My fair Lady". Many of these are performed individually, rather than involving the entire cast. Dance is used in the movie to show the growth of relationship between Eliza and Higgins. Dance is also used as part of Eliza's education, when she must learn how to dance like a duchess.

From art to music, the movie "My Fair Lady" is a very good example of all the different aspects of fine arts. Though considered a musical film, "My fair Lady" also contains classic musical ideas, as well as important ideas about art in general. Due to its adaptation from a play, "My Fair Lady" contains excellent examples of drama, dance and music. Art is also represented very well due to the costumes and sets of this time period.

Please note that this sample paper on My Fair Lady is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on My Fair Lady, we are here to assist you. Part Two

The first example of a many to many relationship is that each order that is placed by the customers will contain several lines (or at least one line) that list what item was ordered, how many of that item were ordered, and so on. Each item for sale may appear on more than one order. So there is a many-to-many relationship between the order and products entities. The second example of a many to many relationship is in a library, customers can borrow many books and each book can be borrowed by many customers, so this seems to be a simple many-to-many relationship between customers and books.

Two examples of ternary relationships (single relationship between three tables) are

1. Shipment, Supplier, Part

. Customer, Order, Salesman

One ternary relation that exists is the relationships between the supplier, products and the order details table. A supplier provides the product that then becomes part of the order. Another ternary relationship that exists is the customer, employees and sales territory tables. A customer purchases from an employee who services a sales area. The third ternary relationship that exists is the relationship between the ship, customers and order tables. The customers set up a shipping preferred shipping method from the available shipping methods and the order dictates the method.

Property in Wyoming

My property in Wyoming is special to me because of the scenery and peacefulness.

When ever I need a break from reality I can always go up there and lose myself with hard

work and rewarding outcomes. To the West are the mountains and Laramie Peak; to the

South is the little town of Wheatland, population of 5,000; to the East is Grey Rocks

Lake; and to the North is a valley full of cattle and many other farm animals.

When my father first bought the property eight years ago, there was nothing but

three humongous oaks, seventy acres of fields, and a road that is two-thirds a mile long.

Within a few years, we built a barn. That took a good six months to build. We lived in a

truck camper while we built the barn, always cooking on the grill and sometimes going

into town to get some fast food. Then a few more years later we started to build a house.

We built it ground-up, it was a lot of fun learning how to build anything and just knowing

that you built your own house was very rewarding. We finally had a place to live. No one

had ever been in the house before us. It felt nice to know that we started with nothing and

blossomed.

During the summer my dad and I bale up hay to let the land pay for itself. We have

two tractors, one for me and one for him, a baler, stacker, and a swather. The swather is

used to mow/cut down the field when it is ready to be done. Then we let the hay dry for

about a week to make sure that when we bale it up the bales aren't moldy. I'm normally

the one to bale up the hay. That's my equipment to play with. Then after the hay is all

baled up my dad goes around with the stacker and picks up the bales. I think it's funny

how the land can pay for itself, I guess it's a farmer thing.

The land by the way is beautiful. The valley is a perfect place to go and think about

anything, especially when you need to answer a question that has been bothering you. It is

perfect for painting a scenery or landscape because it is forever changing. During daytime,

the grass is green, yellow, and sometimes during the droughts, brown. Then at night, the

sunsets are many different colors. Some nights it is purple and pink or orange and red. The

best thing about the sunsets are that they are never the same color or look. The clouds are

magnificent with the sunsets. They make you feel like your on another planet. I guess the

ever-changing seasons and colors are what make the farm in Wyoming my special place.

common interpretation of globalization is that it is an 'exogenous' autonomies - a force to be resisted, through the pursuit of autarchic or separatist strategies to protect the domestic heartland. Another interpretation is that globalization offers the opportunity for local or national renewal - the promise of new ideas, new people, new investment, new opportunities for embarking upon a different development parts of the world consider a wider set of possible lives than they ever did before. One important source of this change is the mass media, which present a rich, ever-changing store of possible lives...Until recently […] traditions provided a relatively finite set of possible lives, and fantasy and imagination were residual practices, confied to special persons or domains, restricted to spcial moments or places. In general, imagination and fantasy were antidotes to the finitude of social experience… More persons throughout the world see their lives through the prisms of the possible lives offered by mass media in all their forms. That is, fantasy is now a social practice, it enters, in a host of ways, into the fabrication of social lives for many people in many societies. (Appadurai, 16 5-54)

La Marc Aux Vaches (The Cow Pond)

I arrived at the art museum. To fulfill the assignment, I had to find a piece of artwork that I deemed worthy of my time and attention. I wandered the entire house. Beginning my search on the first floor, I saw many interesting works of art. There were sculptures, paintings, glass-works, all very beautiful but none completely drew me in. I walked up the magnificent staircase, admiring its unbelievable woodwork. Continuing to the second level, I saw more extravagant pieces of art and also a very appealing room with a chapel-type look. Many people stopped here to sketch the beauty of this room, as well as myself until I realized that it would be a nearly impossible task to capture the detail. I headed back on my search for the perfect piece. Walking down the staircase, I saw a piece I must have missed on my way up. It was titled La Marc Aux Vaches or The Cow Pond. I saw it as the most appealing in the museum, at least to my eye. I was drawn in by how natural of a scene it was. There were no machines or evidence of human existence, just nature and cows. Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau, the painter, had captured the scene so beautifully, giving intricate detail where needed. Everything in the painting was amazing. The sky was many shades of blue as well as white for clouds. The trees had detail for many of the leaves plus the trunks. The cows were small, but at the same time had just enough detail to see them clearly. And the ground was various shades of green, for grass. All the cows were either drinking from the pond or going closer to get a drink. I thought this was the most appealing piece, to me, because it was such a simple scene, captured so magnificently. No details were left out and everything was easy to see. I'm not saying that this is the best piece in the entire museum, because there were many others that were just as beautiful as this, but this was the most personally appealing. I attempted to sketch it, as part of the assignment, but that didn't turn out all that well, as you may be able to see. But I think I was able to get the basic design. I went online to find a good picture of it, but everywhere I looked all there was were different paintings of his.

I enjoyed the trip to the museum. Being part of an art-based English class, I thought it was beneficial to see some artwork. The Paine Art Museum is a beautiful place, inside and out. I never went behind the building, but after looking at the Paine website I wish I had. The backyard was gorgeous in the pictures and I'm sure it was even better in person. This was my first visit to this museum and I had a very pleasant experience so I'm sure it won't be my last.

Alice Garrison was one of the main characters of the play "I Never Sang for My Father" written by Robert Anderson. In her early forties, Alice Garrison was described as an attractive, realistic, and brisk woman with an outspoken mind. She left her parents, Tom and Margaret Garrison, to marry her current husband Sidney. Sidney, a doctor, was a man that Tom had disapproved of but nonetheless, Alice still married him. Alice's outspokenness contrasts with her younger brother Gene's indecisiveness.

Alice was just as stubborn as her father but and did not want to give in to his stubbornness so she rebelled against him. Alice saw through Tom's stubbornness and was appalled by it. She was also appalled at Tom's callousness towards Margaret's death. After Margaret's death, Tom did not want to disown Alice anymore and only wanted to get close to her, to love her again. Alice sympathized with Tom and even offered to help him find a full time house keeper to take care of him.

Gene on the other hand, a 40 year old teacher who loved his mother with all his heart and wanted to love his father. Gene was assertive when his mother, Margaret took control of his life, but at the same time wanted him to be happy. Gene wanted to move out west to California to get married to Peggy, a woman he met on his sabbatical. Tom had no one to live with nor did he have anyone to look after him. Therefore, Gene was reluctant to leave his father, even though Tom was a self-centered man who refused help from anyone.

Gene absorbed his father's condescending attitude and denial about his condition with passiveness. Whereas, Alice was the complete opposite- she spoke of the reality of his condition after Margaret's death, which was the last thing Tom wanted to hear. Alice had recognized that Tom had become a burden that neither Gene nor Alice should have to bear. In conclusion, there really was no resolution to Gene or Alice's situation. Gene moved out west and got married to Peggy. Alice and Gene took turns visiting Tom and Tom visited Gene on occasions. Both Alice and Gene put much effort into trying to love Tom but found it difficult because Tom had trouble getting close to anyone. Though Alice shared differences with Tom, she still loved Tom even though he disowned her. On one of Tom's visit to California, Tom had passed away. With no resolution in mind, Gene felt guilt inside that he never sang for his father. Alice on the other hand regretted not being able to love her father and it took her mother's death to bring her and Tom to talk to each other.

In Athens, Protagoras' books were burned and he was exiled forever because of his beliefs. Protagoras was a philosopher that believed that there is no absolute truth. He was a sophist; a teacher or professor that taught for a fee and traveled around to manipulate the way people thought. Protagoras and sophists were thought highly of and were considered "wise men". He influenced people and changed their way of thinking.

Protagoras was basically saying that everything is true. Protagoras' idea makes one reevaluate life itself, how are you to know that what is said is really true? As humans we may never really know. This shows that teaching is not always the truth. Like an individual that was taught that discrimination is right versus another individual that may have been taught that discrimination is wrong, this shows that a person can be taught something that is wrong but in their mind frame it could be right. Society is yet a changing idea. Generation after generation is taught differently. Who knows what will be taught in the generation yet to come.

Your perception of things is your knowledge. What you see can be totally different in the eyes of another person. Everything is not viewed as the same. One may believe in God the other may believe in Buddha but who am I to say that your beliefs are wrong and that mine are right? We as a society live in a diverse world there are many different beliefs, values and moral standards that are implanted in each and every mind. One may choose to change one's opinion on what they believe in only by choice. No one is force to do anything or believe anything you do it on your own will.

One person may know things that you may not know and yet still they are not smarter than you.

How am I to know that my boyfriend loves me if there is not truth? How am I supposed to know if there really is a God? Sometimes you just have to believe and have faith, the questions have to cease. You just cannot go around questioning everything then there would be no solutions for anything. The world would be full of confused people. There would not be order or self-control amongst us. There would be chaos against each other. These are the reasons why Protagoras was exiled because he caused confusion among the people.

Everyone is usually used to something that is traditional and cut and dry. Some may not like the thought of someone coming in and changing what they are used to. That is why the world is so corrupted today because people are narrow-minded. They don't want to look at the big picture. They see only what is ahead of them and that is all. They look at things as though things will never change.

principles the static painting ernimmt.

To be the number one service organisation in financial services by September 005 - thats our mission. And we know that achieving it is dependent on our ability to enhance the customer experience through better delivery of service and improving customer perceptions through more compelling advertising and a distinctive visual identity.

So weve taken a completely fresh look at how we can improve the customer experience and our advertising and visual identity, rethinking not just how we look but how we act as well. Heard it all before? Well this time its different.

Heres how it works - the Westpac DNA

Our customer focus strategy is clear. We have committed ourselves to a mission that demands a range of actions that will lead to a dramatic improvement in customer satisfaction. These actions involve improving not only the customer experience, but also improving customer perceptions.

If we can improve the customer experience and use of advertising and visual identity to improve customer perceptions and promote what were doing to improve the customer experience, we have a great opportunity to become the number one service organisation in financial services by September 005.

Our brand positioning

Defining our brand positioning is key. The brand positioning is not a tagline but the strategy that defines the messages our advertising should deliver. We have completed a lot of research with staff and customers to define what messages they want to hear, and the core message they want to hear is that Westpac delivers a consistently better customer experience by doing things differently to other banks.

Customers said this message would be motivating to them and would differentiate us from competitors provided we deliver proof of how we are improving the experience ie by improving the service basics and by adding value through products and advice. Thats why all our new advertising now has proof points.

Personality Profile

The research with our customers also told us what style they wanted to deliver this message in, which led to the development of personality guidelines. The personality guidelines are doing things differently, customer is the hero, knows money, down to earth, optimistic energy and not chest beating.

This is the character of our brand that needs to infect all our communications. Its the kind of personality that does things with spirit and purpose - showing the benefits to our customers.

Its a personality that needs to be delivered with a distinctive visual identity and new communications that puts fresh thinking to the fore.

Doing things differently looks different

We know that our advertising and visual identity can help shape how our customers perceive us. Part of this challenge is to translate our brand positioning and personality into a distinctive visual identity and powerful communications.

There will be three key areas of change in our visual identity

a new advertising theme

a new visual identity system

an updated identity architecture

European Exploration Age

Although the exploration of the new world had many gains and benefits, it also had it's many problems. The English people had many reasons to explore, such as trading, over population, and just the need for explorers to explore. Without the finding of the new world we would obviously not be here today, and would all be speaking a different language today if it weren't for it. Along with that comes the horrors of slavery and war that occurred because of this exploration. You can argue either way on whether it was good or bad, because it was good and bad for different people.

There were many reasons for the English and other countries to explore these new lands. The competition for trading was getting very harsh with the English, the Spanish and Dutch finding routes to the Indies. Although they were looking for a route to Asia, they found a whole new territory. Over population was also a reason for exploration. The English did not have a problem with over-population, but they thought they did, so an idea was for people to get on ships and go over seas, for jobs and homes there. With all of these explorers having no places east to explore, they needed somewhere to go, so they went West, and not knowing what they were looking for found the Americas.

To the native Americans, it was a horrifying experience. They were kicked off their own land and enslaved. The Africans were taken from their homes and enslaved, many Africans and native Americans died because of this. The exploration also brought about many wars. These wars were fought between many different groups. The natives went to war with the English, which resulted in the slaughter of many natives. The English also fought with the Spanish over land and gold. It eventually brought on the Revolutionary war and the Civil war. When America was supposed to be a place of free warship, in many places, if you were Jewish or atheist, or even Roman Catholic, you were ostracized and harshly punished.

To counter that, it was amazing for the new settlers. There was all kinds of crops, such as rice, sugar and mainly tobacco. There was also much gold to be found out west in the later years. With this establishment there was freedom of religion and such, but only in certain colonies. Without the colonization of America, all of the Americans today would not have the same liberties they now have. The gaining of territory also helps the English and Spanish have jobs and places for their people to be.

There is no risk that has no negative effects, of course the negative effects of the exploration were very severe, but someone was going to eventually find it, and it was going to happen. You can't have positive effects without the negative ones, they go hand in hand. The exploration that occurred is over all beneficial, because it was inevitable that this was going to happen.

Essay Paper

Psychology in Secondary Education

Marcella King

September 5, 00

Humanistic education is made up of loosely related assumptions and techniques. The movement emerged as a reaction against prevailing approaches in education. It happened during a time in American history when there was dissatisfaction with many aspects of our society as well as a distrust of authority. The view stressed that humans control much of their own behavior, and parents and teachers should allow freedom for children to explore and develop. This view was proposed by three eminent psychologists Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers and Arthur Combs.

In the humanistic approach to learning, teachers are encouraged to create a classroom environment that address students' needs and helps them develop a positive attitude about themselves and others. The non-cognitive values of emotions, values and self-perception are stressed. Techniques used in teaching this approach are the use of role-playing, values clarification and abolishing the traditional grading system.

Teachers are encouraged to allow students to make choices and to manage their own learning. It is also important to establish a warm and positive atmosphere in the classroom. The teacher should also serve as a facilitator and helper and use object lessons in the classroom as well as setting a good example for her or his students.

I believe that there are many ways that I could facilitate the humanistic approach in my classroom. One way is to collaborate with students in designing classroom rules at the beginning of the year. Another possibility is for students to give suggestions on various topics they would like to research either as an individual or in a group.

As a teacher I believe it is important to make the students feel valuable and cared for. Being able to call a student by his or her name is an important way to build a relationship. One way to learn students' names quickly would be to take pictures of each student at the beginning of the year as a quick referral point. Greeting each student at the door at the beginning of the period with a smile and positive comment helps build a positive relationship with students. Letting students know your office hours at school if they need to talk to you about a situation can also be helpful. Giving a variety of choices to do for a project lets students help with decision- making. Placing a suggestion box in the classroom for ideas or concerns without students signing their name can create a safe and caring environment.

In the local school that I have worked with, the chorus participates in a number of civic activities such as singing at care facilities or at the hospital Christmas party. I believe these activities help students become sensitive to the needs of others as well as becoming a role model for other students.

I know there are other ways that I can encourage the humanistic approach in my classroom. By doing so, I will instill some of the best values my students will need as they become valuable assets to society.

This document has been prepared in order to compare the different features of racing wheels. The Xtreme Customizing race car needs to be fitted with four lightweight racing wheels that are able to withstand the stress produced on and off the race track. During my reaserch I have come across many different products. These products all vary in size, weight, cost, strength and design according to the application. Throughout my reasearch, I have found that the metal alloy being used to make the wheel has a direct effect on these properties. I have taken this into consideration to help find the best product to suit our needs.

The main three types of material used in making racing wheels is aluminum, steel and chrome. Aluminum wheels are the lightest available on the market today and are resonably priced. This seems to be the reason for the gaining popularity of the aluminum alloy wheels among racing teams. The steel rims are a bit heavier, stronger and less expensive than the aluminum ones. These are usaully used in heavier applications such as drag racing where any other wheel would twist and bend under the stress. The heaviest and most expensive rims would have to be chrome based. Although there the heaviest and most expensive, they by far have the best finish, look and style. Many racers like these because they make the car stand out the most and are well respected by the fans. I believe because of our racing style and our vehicle of choice, it would be best to go with a lightweight aluminum racing wheel.

Another thing that should be considered is the spoke design. Each wheel may range from having anywhere from three to sixteen spokes. The spokes on a wheel help to transfer stess evenly throughout the part. It also helps to cool down the brakes by circulating the air flow through the tire to the brake pads. The fewer the spokes, the faster the cooling rate while on the track. Although choosing a wheel with very few spokes takes away from the strength of the wheel, so a medium must be reached. I believe that it would be safe and wise for us to choose a rim with seven or eight spokes. This will allow just enough air to keep the brakes cool without sacraficing alot of strength.

In the racing world the ideal rim would be one of very light weight and very high strength. Usaully to get one property you have to sacrifice the other. A very light weight rim will not have the high strength tolerence a heavy rim would and vice versa.

The rims that we require for the Xtreme Customizing Race Car do not have to be extremely strong because they're to be mounted on a lightweight car. Although it must be able to handle the everyday stresses of racing. Motegi Racing says our newly designed lightweight racing wheels are able to cope with the everyday stresses on and off the track. Many other companies also state there aluminum wheels to be the strongest and lightest among the competition.

I have reasearched a different variety of wheels and come to conclusion on which one will best suit our needs.

The most important decision when a team is assembled is what the goal of the team will be. It is imperative that the teams' goals are well defined (Tools for Teams pg ). Depending on the type of team sometimes the goal is given to them and sometimes the team chooses it themselves. In the case of a Self-Directing or Self-Governing the team chooses their own goal (Tools for Teams pg 17). This can be a time consuming process. If the team chooses a problem that is too broad in scope it can make it difficult for the team to handle, resulting in frustration and possible conflict (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Later on in the process there is the possibility for the team to under or over analyze the problem. In the case of under analyzing the problem the team may jump to conclusions (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/). This maybe caused by a team that is being directed to resolve the problem quickly or if the team feels rushed. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that it usually is not detected until well after analyzing the problem, when the team is determining possible solutions. Over analyzing the problem can lead to paralysis and team frustration by endless data collection and debating. If the team lingers to long analyzing the problem it usually gets personal and when it does conflict will follow.

Member participation is also an important factor to reduce the potential for conflict. When making team decisions it may not be necessary that all members be present. However, if their expertise is required, or if they will be affected by the decision then they should be present. Leaving a team member out of an important discussion will build resentment (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

In some cases a team may spend a significant amount of time and energy on analyzing and identifying the problem that they just run out of steam. The team should have developed some guidelines to be used to develop the solution. During the discussion of a proposed solution and how to implement the solution members may feel that they have nothing left to give and simply choose to ignore or have lost focus on the guidelines. Member participation will drop or short cuts will be taken. By not keeping the guidelines or crteria in mind when discussing the proposed solution, and how to implement it the team will negate all the prior work they have done (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Conflict can be productive

A team without conflict, in the end, may not have determined the best solution to the problem. The real problem occurs when the conflict gets personal, or when the team fails to manage the conflict. Conflict is just another obstacle, and by overcoming this obstacle the team grows stronger through teamwork, interpersonal skills, trust and innovation (Tools for Teams pg ). Also, the sense of accomplishment by overcoming such a large obstacle is a learning experience, brings the members closer, and can increase a team's morale (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

A Two-dimensional, often black and white photograph of a horizontal brain "slice" is produced by the computer

"For a full brain scan 180 separate scans are made." (Reber & Reber, 001, p. 1).

Least expensive of the brain imaging techniques.

MRI scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Exploits the magnetic principle of molecules, specifically of the hydrogen atom.

A computer combines information about magnetic fields and radio waves to generate a picture of the brain.

several X-rays are taken of the brain from different vantage points while person is inside a large cylinder

The MRI scan produces high-resolution, -dimensional, colored-pictures of the brain.

Most expensive of the brain imaging techniques

Noninvasive Brain Imaging Techniques

To document brain activity

PET scans

fMRI scans (Functional MRIs)

PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography)

A water-based solution of radioactive oxygen is injected into a vein where it is then carried throughout the blood vessels and brain.

The radioactive oxygen breaks into positrons

very small particles

The positrons degrade

While degrading, gamma rays are emitted.

PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography)

The gamma rays occur with different densities for each area of the brain.

The density of gamma rays in each area is translated by the computer and depicted as separate colors

red=most dense, yellow, quite dense, green=moderately dense, blue, least dense.

Blood vessels enlarge in the area(s) of the brain that are active, hence gamma rays are quite dense when coming from active brain regions.

Can easily view which parts of the brain becomes active during (are involved in) particular behaviors

PET Scans of Brains

Normal v. Schizophrenic

Functional MRI

This method functions in a manner similar to the MRI.

fMRI uses the magnetic properties of hemoglobin to generate its real-time activities of the brain

"When the oxygen is absorbed [by firing neurons] the hemoglobin no longer carries the oxygen, so we can refer to blood as being oxygenated or deoxygenated. Oxygenated blood has magnetic properties, but deoxygenated blood does not. fMRI techniques calculate a ratio of oxygenated to deoxygenated blood in the local area." (Willingham, 001, p. 44).

This issue of animal testing is extremely controversial. This matter can cause many ethical and moral concerns. Good points can be shown from those that oppose animal testing and those for it. I don't believe the issue is either black or white.

It is estimated that about 40 million rats and mice are used in experiments each year. This isn't including other species involved in several different researches. The numbers are quite high and could be decreased if only the crucial tests were performed. The essential studies are those that examine medical advances and certain psychological advances.

It's not acceptable to do several unnecessary tests. Tests for cosmetics could be avoided. Also, testing the effects of a chemical on a species is pointless if you already know that the chemical is harmful. Outcomes of a test are going to be different for a dog or ape as opposed to a human.

To avoid such staggering numbers of animal subjects, experimenters could use alternatives for the study. For example, researchers can now grow a thin layer of cells on a membrane and monitor changes in electrical resistance in the cells as they are exposed to test chemicals. There have also been some companies that have developed artificial "human skin" which can be used in skin grafts for burn victims and other patients and can replace animals in product tests. Another alternative is by using computers, scientists can build an accurate model of a human heart that will allow researchers to test new treatments electronically before they are attempted on humans. Computerized "virtual organs" predict how drugs will be absorbed. Drug companies can then test the effects of substances electronically before trying them on a human.

However, these alternatives won't always work. Animal testing is acceptable on rats and other small creatures when it is absolutely necessary. Testing this way can be very helpful and has improved the knowledge on many scientific and medical questions. Animal research should be limited to the species of small animals only. The use of larger animals such as dogs, apes, and pigs should be eradicated. These more domesticated animals have become pets and it is harder to see them go through such suffering.

Some activists create many arguments about the principles behind killing so many animals. However, there are an estimated 15 million dogs and cats put to death in pounds and shelters each year. These cats and dogs are put to their death for the simple reason that the pounds and shelters are overcrowded. So maybe there should be an equal amount of conflict protesting pounds.

No matter how awful animal testing seems, in the long run it has benefited many people through medicine and data. Every opportunity to engage in further advancements should be used for the betterment of the human population. It seems unethical to put animals through such pain and torture, but if the testing stopped completely there would be a large amount of human lives lost. Additionally, it's better to have animals tested than humans. The health, safety, and importance of the human population outweigh the health, safety, and importance of the rat population.

Fortunately There Will Always Be Fairies

At this moment, it is 1 am and I am about to tell you the story of my life. And I do not know where or how to begin. What I do know is, when it all started, I also know what it is like to have my life, for the simple reason that it is mine and that I spend day and night living it. What I do not know is where it is going. But that is one thing that we all have in common I assume.

I also assume that though you have already read the first paragraph of my so called biography you couldn't even tell my gender so I think that it would only be fair to begin introducing myself properly. My parents named me Emilia Anna, I was named after grandmothers, the first name in honor of my father's and second to not offend my mother's parents.

I am at this moment precisely 1 years, 4 months, a week and a day old. A teenager one might say. Neither child nor adult, but in that awkward in between stage that everybody calls the best years of their life. My eyes are brown but I always wished they were blue, I have a gap between my two front teeth and freckles on my nose.

It is now 18 am and I have just described my facial features, so I guess we're making an- I admit slow but evident progress.

I believed in fairies until I reached the age of 5. I was persuaded they lived in my mom's tulips and would always keep an eye on the pink and yellow flowers to catch a glimpse of one.

It never happened.

At the age of four, a day before leaving my home, which is Switzerland, to live in the United States, I got engaged to my five year old neighbor in the red sandbox behind my house.

Needless to say that this long distance relationship did not last.

But I kept busy. During my third week of school, I lost my first tooth having lunch at my new cafeteria while biting into a cheese sandwich. While I very much enjoyed the fact that the entire dining hall was on all fours trying to find it, tears still stung my eyes when it wasn't found. So I never got to see the tooth-fairy either.

Despite all these disappointments at early age, I enjoyed my childhood thoroughly, being loved by wonderful parents and two little brothers and spending most of time drawing and painting outside (while consequently keeping my eye open for any sign of a fairy) and selling my masterworks off to the friendly and patient neighbors.

My Papa would put my pajama pants on his head to make me laugh and read me Gebrueder Grimm Maerchen before tucking me in. He would record the stories and then, when he was on business trips my mom and I would listen to them. I still do sometimes.

I am scared of growing up, of being responsible of myself and failing. Of not seeing my family everyday and missing out on how my brothers grow up. Of not being able to begin a sentence with "I am scared of growing up". I am also afraid of sharks and the idea of eating at Commons for the following 4 years.

I believe in love, in passion and adventure. I believe that traveling is education and that bagels taste better when toasted. I believe that there is good in humans, even though I ever so often have my doubts. I do not believe in regrets or learning the value of the square root of x . But I still like to believe in fairies.

Type of Services Offered

The famous "Twelve Steps" of AA express the philosophy and recovery process of this international association. Offering hope of recovery from alcoholism is an essential feature of Alcoholics Anonymous. Such hope is provided by example and supportive interrelationships with other members of this self-help fellowship.

Each person is expected to become involved with the Twelve Steps of AA, an ongoing process that "twelve-steppers" refer to as "working the Program…" The word "alcohol" appears only in the first step. This one reference underscores AA's belief that the main work in recovery is a restructuring of the alcoholic's life.

The Twelve Traditions of AA are the operational principles of the fellowship and express the importance and significance of the group in relationship to its members, nonmembers, and society in general.

Group Size

This group looks pretty big. There were about 50 people.

Agency Purpose

Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the most successful approaches in recovery from alcoholism. AA is a fellowship of problem drinkers who want help in maintaining sobriety. The agency's purpose is to help alcoholics to quit drinking. When they gather together, they help each other to quit drinking. They share their experiences with each other and they learn through their experiences. When they hear different stories on how bad alcohol can make you look, then they understand that there is no purpose for using alcohol. What the agency does is that they let everybody gather together and share their own experiences.

Source of Clients

Source of clients can be from court orders, doctor referrals, counseling or just being tired of self abuse.

Cost of Clients

This program is completely free and available to everybody.

How is Program Funded?

It's a self-supported organization which works through donations.

Program Methodology

This program is developed on these twelve steps

1.We admitted we were powerless over alcohol-that our lives had become unmanageable.

.Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

.Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we Understood Him.

4.Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5.Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6.Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7.Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8.Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

.Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10.Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11.Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

1.Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Program Success

There were about 50 folks who succeeded in this program. They were sharing their happy moments on how this program helped them out.

Other Information

Founded in 15 by two alcoholics who were unable to achieve an alcohol-free lifestyle individually, AA began when these two joined together to stay sober through mutual support. Voluntary membership involves an emotional commitment that the alcoholic is powerless over the control of alcohol and that only "a power greater than the self" AA's concept of God as we understand him-can restore soundness of mind.

I think it's a great program that helps people to quit drinking. I am glad that the AA meeting is available for everyone and it's available for free.

Sweet and Sour, wrong and right, night and day. Most people have come to beleive that opposites, while having differences, are usually similar in some ways. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, two children Jean Louise Scout Finch and Jeremy Jem Finch encounter changes in their small town. Their father Atticus Finch, attourney-at-law, has taken up a challenging case, and the whole town seems to be affected. The two children, Scout and Jem, handle there changes and the changes between each other in the individual ways through their different actions and ambitions. But when it comes down to their true values, things remain the same.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the author sets different purposes for the characters Jem and Scout to achieve. Throughout the novel, Scout serves as the narrator, so most of the story is written as an eight year old would see it. Also, Scout had the hard job of playing with Dill all summer. The two children seem to keep occupied with the gossip of Maycombs on-going changes in the townspeople and the town itself. They also keep occupied with Scouts plans for entertainment, including Jem, Scout, and Dills on-going game to get Boo Radley to emerge from his house. Jems overall goal throughout the novel is to help Atticus keep Scout in line. Since he is a working man, Atticus hardly has time to watch over Scouts every move, so to help Calpurnia, their cook, and Atticus, wherever Scout is found Jem is also.

Other differences are shown throughout the changing events upon which the Finch family encounters. Their individual ways of reacing to these changes and/or mishaps lets one really view the differences between Jem and Scout. When Scout is burdened or upset by a situation, she usually lets someone, such as Atticus or Calpurnia, know. She is not one to hide behind the actions of others. On the other hand, Jem seems to hold his feelings in until they are forgotten. He burdens himself with the problems of others, all the while wishing to be a better man like his father Atticus.

Through their differences, Jem and Scout Finch are very good children with high standards of life. While being known for their curiosity and free will, Jem and Scout hold dear their family they have with Atticus,Calpurnia, and each other. They also value friends such as Dill and Miss Maudie, that have helped keep the ties between the Finch family close through the changes occurring throughout the trial of Tom Robinson.

Throughout the events in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the children Jem and Scout, while exerting their differences, show great compassion and place great value on their family, friends, and religion. Especially after reading through all of their troubles and the on-going changes and mishaps occuring around the Finch family, one can only think the Finchs to be very adapting and strong in their ability to equip themselves to endure change.
