Initial problem

When the river has an Suspendable Solids (SS) of 5mg/l and alkalinity of 1.5mg/l (expressed as CaCO), 0mg/l of alum was added during the treatment process to make sure that the water passed water standards for the World Health Organisation WHO).

But subsequently the amount of SS was found to have increased to 50mg/l. Logically, when this happens, by doubling the amount of alum added initially, we would be able to generate enough precipitate to filter off the 50mg/l of SS such that the amount of SS left in the solution would be able to pass WHO drinking water standards. This did not happen thus this report is to look into the probable reasons to why the move did not work and the possible solutions to the problem.

Allowable Limits According to the standards of Drinking water from World Health Organization (WHO), the acceptable range of alum dosage is from 5 50mg/l

School papers on Analysis of water treatment problemAssignment

Thus, the 60mg/l of Alum added by the Plant manager has exceeded the acceptable limit.

Analysis

There may be various reasons to why the initial process did not work.

Physical reasons

(Note that we are adding in double the dosage thus the reactors/tanks might not be equipped or designed to take that kind of load)

•The process of mixing alum might not be thorough enough thus the Al(OH) was not precipitated properly

•Not enough time was allowed for precipitation to take place

•The coagulant did not have enough time for it to be saturated with the SS before the coagulant was filtered off.

•As the rate of chemical reaction decreases with decreasing temperature, assume that the temperature near the Hu river does not enhance the rate of reaction thus accounting for the decrease in precipitate formation

Chemical reasons

•There might not be enough alkalinity in the water thus the alum would not be able to precipitate to remove the SS.

•For the water pH between 5 to 8 which we assume to be the optimal pH for which Al(OH) would be precipitated best. When the pH is out of this range the Al(OH) become more soluble(due to the solubility constant) thus less precipitate would be produced and less SS will be removed.

Calculations

Main Equation

= = 0.7

0.7mg/l of alkalinity is needed mg/l of Alum.

Thus for an alum dosage of 0mg/l the alkalinity expressed as mg/l HCO- = (1/16) x 0.7 x 0 = 16.5mg/l

Thus when 50mg/l of Alum is added,

Amount of HCO- needed = 16.5x50/0

= 7.5mg/l

Total amount of CaCO to react with 50mdg/l of Alum= (16/1)x7.5 = 6.5mg/l

There is a deficiency of alkalinity thus explaining why the alum will not react to precipitate thus not removing the level SS to meet WHO standards.

Possible Solutions

1)Add in the extra alkalinity need for 50mg/l of alum to react then remove the hardness and acidity generated

)Add in lime to remove the extra SS needed to attain WHO standards (more popular method as it is less expensive but increases the hardness)

)Add in Soda Ash to remove the extra SS needed to attain WHO standards (does not increase hardness but increases the acidity of the water)

Solution

Prior to the addition of alum, add in excess CaCO into the water to allow the alum to react fully when added.

Total HCO needed to react 60mg/l of alum = 7.5mg/l

Total HCO in the water = 1/100 X 1.5 = 16.47

Note the fact that alum when reacted with Ca(HCO) produces CO gas which becomes HCO- which in turn reacts with the alum.

CO +…HO. HCO- + H+

Initially the HCO- is the limiting agent thus

Amount of CO produced with 1.5m/l of alkalinity in water = (6x44)/(x16)x1.5 = 7.

Amount of alum reacted with 1.5 of alkalinity

= 1.5/0.7 = 18.4 mg/l

Remaining

Alum = 50-18.4 = 1.51mg/l

HCO- generated = (61/44) x 7. = 10.16mg/l

HCO- needed= 7.5-16.47-10.16 =0.87mg/l

In this case as the reactions are reversible, it would be more complicated to add in the solubility constant for the calculations. Thus we estimate that the amount of HCO- needed would be twice to thrice of that needed to fully react with the alum.

Thus HCO- needed = x0.87 = .61mg/l

Amount of CaCO needed to e added in

= (100/1)x.61 = .14mg/l

In the case of hardness, total Ca in the water

= (40/100)x(1.5+.14) = 15.64mg/l.

Conclusion

What is presented is the possible solution to the problems of Hu river. There are other ways of treating the water such as adding in lime or soda ash but in this case alum was used. The important reason to using alum is because it does not increase the hardness of the water and they remove pathogens and particles better than other coagulants. They decrease the alkalinity with the acidic CO gas they produce. Thus they must be added in specific amounts so as to maintain the pH needed to fulfill WHO standards.

Macbeth Essay Is Macbeth A Tragic Hero Or A Tyrant?

Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's most emotive plays, is set in Scotland during the 11th Century and follows the downfall of a man who is led by temptation to mass murder and cruelty. Macbeth, at different stages in the play, demonstrates many of the characteristics of both an evil tyrant and a tragic hero. However, a tragic hero is defined as a great man who falls because of a fatal flaw and Macbeth bests fits this description. Therefore Macbeth fits the role of a tragic hero and not a tyrant.

In Aristotle's "Poeticus", an ancient Greek drama, the definition of a tragic hero includes several criteria. Firstly, the character must be important and his actions must affect many people. Secondly, the character must be good-natured, well known, respected and brave and of good repute. The third criterion is that the character must have one tragic flaw, which leads to his downfall. Last of all, the tragic hero must redeem himself despite his flaw and eventually create sympathy for the character.

Macbeth is presented at the start of the play as a noble man, one full of all the good qualities a man could desire bravery, strength, loyalty, manliness and health. In Act 1 Scene , Macbeth is talked of as a heroic warrior that "brandished steel which smoked with bloody execution". Many other characters in the play also see Macbeth as a honourable man, with the King acknowledging this with comments such as "O valiant cousin, worthy Gentleman". Indeed, if Macbeth did not display these characteristics, then the title of Thane of Cawdor would not have been bestowed upon him in the first place. Already, Macbeth is appearing to fit the criteria for a tragic hero, as he is of good repute and is respected, brave, and honourable. As well, his actions have so far affected many people, as he has saved Scotland from invasion and played a large part in a battle (another criteria of a tragic hero).

Cheap college papers on Macbeth

The other characteristic of a tragic hero is a flaw in the character. In Macbeth's case, it is his unnaturally large sense of ambition and pride, his imagination and insecurity as a man that contributes to his demise. His unnaturally large amount of ambition is even acknowledged by Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 7. "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition which o'erleaps itself and falls on th'other..". This refers to Macbeth's motivation to kill Duncan. Macbeth's ambition is the central driving force for almost all of his actions in the play, and it is the witches who play on this ambition.

Macbeth's insecurity as man is another one of his character faults. Macbeth can "prove" his manliness on the battlefield easily, however Lady Macbeth's knowledge of Macbeth's lack in manliness in other areas allows her to easily manipulate Macbeth to kill the king. In Act 1 Scene 7 after Macbeth makes the tentative decision not to kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth questions Macbeth's manhood by stating, "When you durst do it, then you were a man". Lady Macbeth also offers another taunt in Act Scene 4 after Macbeth's 'sight' of Banquo's ghost by asking "Are you a man?" to call for Macbeth's regain in composure. This insecurity in his manhood is played upon by Lady Macbeth and others in such a way that leads Macbeth to commit dreadful deeds.

Macbeth's last character fault is his imagination. This flaw grows in size as the play progresses. At first regarding the witches prophecies, his imagination allows him to contemplate killing the king. Then as his imagination grows more fanciful he begins seeing ghosts. This delusional behaviour is a manifestation of Macbeth's imagination in real life. As a result of all these character flaws, Macbeth is driven on to murder increasingly until he realises that to turn back would be just as hard as to keep going.

Even though now, Macbeth fits some of the criteria as an evil tyrant someone who is merciless, has a lack of compassion for others, is generally disliked, and kills for his own personal gain; it is important to note that Macbeth did not start out as evil. He was once a "worthy gentleman". Even when Macbeth is at the epitome of his evil, he still has a sense of compassion in which he demonstrates when Lady Macbeth kills herself. Here, he broods on life's futility, clearly in a weak show of grief; "out, out brief candle, life's but a walking shadow". Another sign that Macbeth has not turned into an evil tyrant is his willingness to show mercy.

Before Macbeth kills Duncan, Lady Macbeth attacks Macbeth and convinces him to eliminate Duncan. However Macbeth shows reluctance to be disloyal to his king and tells his wife that he "..will proceed no further in this business.." as he has "golden opinions from all sorts of people..". In this case, Macbeth shows mercy and proves that he has a conscience and is not purely evil.

According to Aristotle, a tragic hero must also evoke pity and sympathy from the audience. From the moment that Macbeth decides to live a lie in Act 1 Scene 7 "False face must hide what false heart doth know," the audience knows that he has condemned himself. They know that all the things he thought of in the soliloquy earlier in the same scene (Act 1 Scene 7, L1-8) will come true that the killer is damned for eternity and that the killer will be killed. The audience immediately feels a pang of pity for the once valiant man now so obviously on a trail to self-destruction. From here, Macbeth digs his own pit and his thoughts do come true, with Lady Macbeth committing suicide and rendering Macbeth loveless and the arrival of Macduff and the English army to overthrow Macbeth.

When Macduff does arrive and threatens the "hell hound" that he will be exhibited in captivity if he will not fight, Macbeth chooses death, as he could not bear to be subservient to Malcolm and be exhibited like a caged animal. Macbeth's choice of death over capture gives him back some of his earlier stature and the audience's pity and sympathy for the once great man rises to a climax. This ability to induce pity and sympathy in the audience is the last ingredient of the 'tragic hero formula'. Its presence proves Macbeth is not simply a tyrant.

In conclusion, Shakespeare's character Macbeth is a perfect tragic hero, not a tyrant. Macbeth was once a great man of high distinction whom, because of his fatal flaws of ambition, insecurity and imagination commits the most heinous of sins and unwittingly brings about his own downfall with the effect of creating sympathy and pity from the viewers. Macbeth moves from a loyal heroic warrior, to 'hell hound' to one who regains some of his earlier nobility and dignity before he dies. These factors combine to produce a masterfully crafted tragic hero who is far more then a simple tyrant.

Dress Codes in Public Schools

The clothing students choose to wear has become dangerous. Dress codes in public schools have been proposed and some have in forced it to protect students from situations of losing their lives over an expensive pair of sneakers. That is why all public schools should make dress codes mandatory. Dress codes also help parents who do not have enough money to buy their children expensive clothing. They give children some options in their uniforms and allow them some choices with the style of their outfits. . Students can purchase their own clothing per standards, at any clothing store. Dress codes should be in forced in every public school.

Dress codes in public schools allow all students to be similar, at least with clothing. Children are so different with race, social class, and their own personal style, that it promotes children to be equal. Schools who have dress codes have less crime with in their school, and less reason for children to make fun of other children who cannot afford nice clothing. Making dress codes mandatory can eliminate most problems schools have with clothing. Uniforms promote an equality in all students, whether you are popular or not (LaPoint PG).

Uniforms not only help students become more equal, but they also help parents finically. Uniforms are a better system for parents who cannot afford nice clothing for their children. They reduce the money students and parents spend on clothing (LaPoint PG). Students will not have to pressure their parents for the latest styles to fit in, which cost a small fortune. Parents will not have to feel guilty or ashamed because they cannot afford the clothes. Students will not have to worry about their new pair of sneakers getting stolen from them. And parents then will not have to spend more money to replace them.

Dress codes in public schools are not just about money, but are a sense of togetherness as one, with out compromising our individuality. Although I fully support dress codes, I also agree with the opposition on the issue. If the dress codes are too strict, students may not be able to express their own individuality (LaPoint PG). I do not think we should make dress codes so strict that students' would have to purchase their uniforms from the school. Children should be given the option to buy clothes privately, to fit a standard. Students' clothes with in that standard can express themselves through their hairstyles, different colors of bottoms, and accessories. This makes the students safe with out sacrificing individuality.

Students will still be able to express themselves, but they will just have to it with in a guideline. Certain right's groups seek to protect the right's of the students' to be able to look as they desire (LaPoint PG). Students' safety today has become more important than students' right's to the latest designer outfit. I cannot understand why a parent would oppose their child wearing an outfit that could help with their child's safety. Have we not gone too far with the right's we have. I am all for our constitutional right's, but not when it comes with a price tag. I believe there comes a point when our right's need to be a bit adjusted to fit the society we live in today. If it is unsafe for our children to go to school with nice clothing or shoes, we have a problem. Children's rights are sacrificed all the time. The freedom of speech is not always applied with an upset parent. The dress code I support, allows children to wear clothing that is similar but allows some of your own expression. Children can wear dress casual pants, shorts, and skirts, in different colors. White-collar shirts do not have to be golf shirts. The fashion industry offers a wide variety for all shapes and styles, to all different types of clothes. I just do not think children's rights are sacrificed anymore than they are in their own home. As a parent your role is to protect your child. Not to make sure they look cute or trendy for their next day at school. Students can exercise their right to express themselves when they become an adult.

Dress codes in public schools help students focus more on school and less on appearance. This may help the child to develop the mind more and the ego less. Uniforms are a safe way to make students more similar with less conflict. This benefits the parents and students because they are spending less money on school clothes. Students' rights are also not tremendously altered. I would rather sacrifice students' rights than see a child be seriously hurt for a pair of sneakers. Uniforms give students a sense of security, and allow them to feel they belong. I did not have to wear uniforms to school. But if I did, I would not have had to worry about what to wear everyday. I would not have to get dressed up for the captain of the football team. And I am sure I could of found ways to express my individuality with my clothes after school, or on the weekends.

Journal #1

I haven't had many intimate relationships in my life; I've only had two physical relationships. I was a late bloomer upon the issue of entering relationships due to my thoughts on my physical appearance. During high school, I was one of those kids that never really said anything in classes and never spoke to girls that much. My friends and I started to hang out with girls more often and that's when I "fell in love" with my ex-girlfriend. This was the start of a relationship that was going nowhere, even though I had no idea at the time. Kristen was a nice girl who at first I did not find all that attractive but I absolutely loved her personality. We started to "date", we never really went out all that much, and we mostly hung out with her and her friends at her house. This relationship only lasted a mere month and a half; she sadly put it to an end. Now that I look back on it, I'm glad she did because neither one of us were all that happy due to circumstances. I think the most that we've hung out may have been ten or eleven times during that month and a half. I was always sad that we didn't get to hang out that much, and when plans didn't fall through I'd always get upset. That was the basis of the break up. After this relationship I was heartbroken, my first love had shot me down, those times were very hard to cope with. After a about two or three months, I decided that it feels a lot better to be single, especially since I'm in high school and it would be a lot easier to get to know girls. I do not regret anything from this friendship; we are currently good friends. At first the relationship was very good but then it turned into a worse one due to circumstances.

The summer before freshman year of college was my best summer ever. My friends Chris, Jimmie, Erika and I used to hang out almost every single day. If I weren't with one of them I was with the other, and no matter what we would have fun. After the summer Erika and I got closer on a more emotional level. We hung out all the time, late on school nights, on weekends, it didn't matter, and we were always together. I still remember the uneasiness that I felt the first time I was in her bedroom, my stomach full of butterflies. I knew this time that I had found someone that I truly like and would want to spend the rest of my life with. Reading this from someone else's standpoint, it may sound ludicrous, but I know what I feel, and it is that. We've been dating for just over a year now and things are going great. Obviously we've had our hard times, but we have also gotten through them. Currently she is in high school, and I think the ultimate test will be when she goes away to college, that is the one thing that I'm worried about. I'm worried that she'll meet some incredible guy and leave me for him. This relationship is the best individual relationships Ive had with a single individual by far.

Relationships are sometimes taken for granted, they are there one day and the next they may not be. I grew up in Hawaii until the age of 1, and every summer before I was 1, I went to New York to visit my grandparents. I remember when the summer before third grade I came back to Hawaii to find that my mother wasn't there and wasn't coming back. I don't quite remember what my father told me but I know I was really sad. My relationship with my father grew greatly after this happened, I felt as if he were spoiling me but not monetarily. I still wonder what it would've been like to grow up with the both of them in Hawaii but I will never know. One thing leads to another, and I eventually ended up in New York for good, not just for a summer vacation. My father works for American Airlines and he got laid off in Hawaii, but then he was transferred to Florida. In Florida I was alone quite often after school I'd come home and no one was there. My father wouldn't get home until 7 or 8 at night, which was a long time home alone when you are only 1. Florida was a turning point for me; I saw that I didn't need my father as much as I thought I did. I felt more independent in a sense, due to all the time I had to my self. The relationship that I had with my father was shaped by the fact that he was the only parent. I grew closer to him while I had the chance to.

I look at the relationship that my uncle has with my grandparents and I see that he is very attached to them. In a way I find it sad because I see him so often, he's 8 and single. I know my uncle loves them very much and would be devastated if anything should happen to them, as would I. Even though I don't have that close of a relationship with my parents, I believe that if I had the chance I still would not, due to my stubbornness. It's funny people think, I used to think that my parent's divorced because of me. That is why I visited with a psychologist a few times when I was younger, to alleviate these thoughts from my head.

I live with my grandparents now, and our relationship was better while I was in high school since i was around more. I now have a car, a job and college, so things are very frantic within my life. I talk to my grandmother sometimes if I have a problem, but most of the time I talk to my girlfriend about my problems. The relationship with my grandparents is the best it could be, at least they dont want to kick me out of the house. The fact that I can talk to my girlfriend about my problems is a big booster to me, because I dont hide anything from her.

I see a relationship that is probably not going to work out that well with my friend. His best friend seems to like his girlfriend so things are getting kind of tense. Falling for someone elses girlfriend is never a good thing, and it should never have gotten that far unless both the guy and girl feel that way. This can turn into a bad relationship and maybe a fight or two.

Another good relationship that I have is with a coworker of mine that I met last year. We talked all the time at work and became very good friends and kept in touch over the winter pretty well. This is a good relationship because we could talk about many things and had many things in common.

With my friend Jimmie, hes probably my best guy friend. At one point he told his girlfriend that me and my girlfriend had had sex and i got very mad about that. I didnt want her to find out because his girlfriend has a big mouth. People found out that didnt have to know at all, so me and Jimmie did not speak for awhile, Id say for at least 4 months. I was so mad at him, whenever I saw him driving by me or whatever hed wave but I wouldnt. Now that I look back, it was only a phase and we are good friends now. This relationship definitely shows the best and worst.

ÖGlobally unique Hardware Identification number burned into each unit

ÖCustomer specific password set burned into each unit

Security Features

ÖCommunications between dongle, driver and application are encoded to prevent ¡°emulator¡± and ¡°playback¡± type hack attacks.

Ö¡°Tracing¡± attacks normally add to the time required for execution. ROCKEY4 has a built-in ¡°watchdog¡± feature that will cause ROCKEY4 to not respond if execution takes too long.

ÖAccess to ROCKEY4 memory is protected with the Basic and Advanced level passwords. The -bit Basic level password set is normally included in the Envelope encrypted executable file and is used to read values from one or more protected memory zones. The Advanced level passwords (also -bit) should not be distributed to the end user and are for the developer to pre-configure the dongle before it is shipped with the application.

ÖROCKEY4 contains a proprietary algorithm that will generate four 16-bit return values from input of a -bit seed code and the Basic/Advanced passwords. The application can compare the values returned from ROCKEY4 to the expected return values. If they are the same, the dongle must be attached.

ÖUser defined algorithms may be as long as 80 instructions (ROCKEY4-Plus and NetROCKEY4). The instructions may use operations + (addition), - (subtraction), (cyclic shift left), (multiplication), ^ (XOR), & (and), | (or, ~ (neg.), ? (compare). An algorithm may implement as many as eight variables A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I. ¡°A¡± through ¡°E¡± are defined by the developer, ¡°F¡± through ¡°I¡± are initiated by the system. ROCKEY4 has three build in calculation functions.

ÖGlobally unique -bit Hardware Identification (HID) number

ÖROCKEY4 can generate a 16-bit random number that may be used as input for seed code security measures.

ÖAs many as 16 ROCKEY4 LPT dongles can be daisy chained off the LPT port. ROCKEY4 can be combined with any number of dongles from other manufacturers.

Envelope Program Protection

The ROCKEY4 Envelope program may be used for direct encryption of Win Portable Executable (PE) files (such as .exe, .dll or .arx). Envelope encryption is a good solution if you do not have the source code or the time or capability needed to use the API functions. The strongest software protection systems will use both the Envelope and API implementations.

The ROCKEY4 Envelope program works by adding a shell to the original PE file. The ¡°shell¡± code is binary instructions that check for the presence of the ROCKEY4 dongle before they allow other instructions in the application to execute. The ROCKEY4 Envelope program can be used for single or multi-file encryption.

Network Support

NetROCKEY4 is a network aware software protection system designed to limit the number of simultaneous users who can access a software application. It combines all the functionality of the standard ROCKEY4 system, with the ability to work seamlessly in LAN/WAN environments that support the UDP/TCP, IPX or NetBIOS protocols. NetROCKEY4 was engineered to support standalone or redundant server environments on both the Windows and Linux platforms. The system includes powerful and intuitive network monitoring and testing tools that ease the implementation effort. The NetROCKEY4 Envelope program provides direct encryption of Windows portable executable files that operate in a network environment.

ÖThe developer can set a maximum number of users for each of 16 separate user groups.

ÖLimits can be set on either the number of users or the number of computers that access an application.

ROCKEY4 has a total of 18-bytes of total usable memory. NetROCKEY4 and ROCKEY4-Plus each have a total of 51-bytes of usable memory space. The table below provides memory zone information for each ROCKEY4 model

Propaganda

Dr Joseph Goebbels was in charge of propaganda

Goebbels aims of propaganda were to make others believe Hitler was the saviour of Germany. Their aims was to make German people accept Hitler and to approve of Nazism.

The propaganda that was used by the nazis were posters, televisions, cinema, public events such as book burning, rallies, newspapers, radio and the 1 Olympics.

The Nuremberg rallies took place in the summer of every year. They consisted of marches, flying displays, bands, parades and speeches made by Hitler.

The Nazis controlled the media in many ways. No books could be published without Goebbels permission. This was to ensure that no negative messages about the Nazis were being read. He organised a book burning which was a great publicity stunt to attract people to come and burn books, which contained ideas that the Nazis would classify as inappropriate.

Goebbels also controlled the newspapers. He knew that Nazism would create a lot of controversy so he kept a close eye on it to be certain that no anti-nazi ideas were being printed. But as there were Jewish editors and journalists they became unemployed.

The Nazis didn't want anyone opposing the Nazis so soon all the anti-nazi papers were prohibited from being published

The cinema films had to portray a positive message about Nazism and contained messages from Hitler at the beginning of films

Posters covered walls giving a positive image of Hitler and criticized the Jews

Goebbels wanted every household to have a radio because they repeated speeches by Hitler as if to force them to accept Hitler

Goebbels banned jazz music because it was associated with black people and they were considered to be inferior. The Olympics was to show that the Aryan race were superior. They made the stadium look modernised so that they could show that Germany was modern, civilised and a successful country.

The visitors were amazed at their faiclities of the stadium. Also at the beginning they the Germans were leading perhaps making people think that the Aryan race was superior. However the winners were mostly black people and many people did not like the blatant propaganda so people did not like it.

Women

The Nazis considered women as only mothers and wives. A newspaper headline once read 'No true German woman wears trousers'. This showed that they preferred men to be dominating.

Women were encouraged to have children by getting a gold cross for having 8 children and gained a privileged seat in Nazi meetings. Propaganda was also used to promote motherhood

The birth rate did increase 15 per 1000 and then increased to 0 per 1000 in 1. The plans to tempt women into having children had been successful as the birth rate increased

Source 0 shows a painting of the Nazis image of and ideal German family. The woman has a husband and has four kids. She does not look very glamorous and is not dressed in impressive cloting. I think that the Nazis preferred the women to be more focused on mothering the children than on make up

The Nazis encouraged discrimination against women applicants for job. They wanted women to remain at home with her children. The numbers of jobs available for women were deliberately limited. This must mean that they didn't approve of women working. However they needed women to work during the war but thin was a contrast to the ideal woman that was illustrated in the picture.

Economic Policy

The Nazis help reduce unemployment for 6 million German people. A large number of men were given jobs due to conscription. This meant that they had to join the war. This gave employment for over a million men. However this did need money for uniform, weapons etc. So coal mines and factories gave more opportunities for workers. And then more people were needed as engineers, designers and fitters for constructing for the air force.

Law and Order

The police force in Nazi Germany had changed for the benefit of the Nazis. The high status jobs in the police force were given to high ranking Nazis. This then enabled them to report of what was happening to Himmler who was head of Germany's police. This meant that they had more power and were able to do things that normal civilians couldn't. They were also under strict instructions to ignore any crimes that were committed by Nazi agents.

The law courts in Nazi Germany were controlled by the Nazis, as well as the judges and the magistrates. This allowed Nazi agents to be excused for any crimes committed and were unfair to any opponents of Nazism.

Reinhard Heydrich was in charge of the Gestapo. The Gestapo's main aim was to reduce opponents of Nazism and to get rid of anyone who didn't like or approve of Hitler. They had power to send anyone to concentration camps on suspicion without reason.

Himmler who was head of Germany's police was also in charge of the SS. The SS men who were very loyal to Hitler had a main responsibility of destroying opposition to the Nazis. They also had units who were in charge of the concentration camps and it was their duty to get rid of the Jews.

The very first concentration camps were set up in Poland December 8th 1 as soon as Hitler came to power. They had used old factories or warehouses in isolated rural areas.

Psychosurgery is the scientific treatment of mental disorders by means of brain surgery.

To us it may seem absurd that the destruction of an area of the brain could lead to an improvement of a mental process.

But, consider what happens when another organ in the body threatens the well being of the whole. Many times the only solution is to remove the organ permanently and eliminate the source of the problem.

Ancient Psychosurgery

Write a research paper on What is Psychosurgery?

Brain surgery is perhaps the oldest of the practiced medical arts. There is evidence of brain surgery dating back to the late Stone Age period. The success rate was very good, even circa 7000 B.C.

Brain surgery was also used for spiritual and magical reasons; usually limited to kings or priests.

Surgical tools were found in South America made of bronze or obsidian. Also Africa showed evidence of brain surgery as early as ,000 B.C. in papyrus writings found in Egypt. "Brain," the word, is used here for the first time in any language.

Hippocrates, the father of medical ethics, left many texts on brain surgery. Many concepts in his writings were still in use two thousand years after his death in 60 B.C.

Some of the most famous ancient brain surgeons were; Aulus Cornelius Celsus of Rome. Galenus of Pergamon, born in Turkey. The physicians of Byzance such as Oribasius and Paul of Aegina. There was also an Islamic school of brain surgery from 800 to 100 A.D., the height of Islamic influence in the world. The greatest Islamic brain surgeon wasAbu Bekr Muhammed el Razi, who lived from 85 to A.D. Aby l'Qluasim Khalaf was also an Islamic brain surgeon that practiced in Cordoba, Spain. He was one of the great influences on western brain surgery.

The early procedure was called Trepanning. The first historical and medical accounts of trepanning were made in 1867, by E.G. Squier, in North America and by Paul Broca in Europe.

In the Medieval times, operations were performed by quack doctors, to extract the so-called "stone of madness", which was believed to be the source of mental illness.

Early Pioneers

The road to scientific psychosurgery started with the discovery that certain parts of the brain controlled temperament, mood and intellect.

A bizarre and well publicize case was very important in the realization of the effects of serious damage to a part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex. It became a classical case in the neurology textbooks.

It was that of Phineas Gage, a young railroad construction supervisor in Vermont. In September 1848, there was an explosion projecting a tamping rod against his head. The rod entered his head through his left cheek, destroyed his eye, traveled through the frontal part of the brain, and left the top of the skull at the other side. He was taken to a local doctor, John Harlow, who took care of him. He could both walk and talk. He not only survived, he recovered. Months later, Gage began to have dramatic changes in mood and behavior. He became extravagant and anti-social. He was no longer "himself".

Phineas Gage became a classical case in the textbooks of neurology. The part of the brain which he had lost, was forever associated to the mental and emotional functions which he had lost.

Scientific neurosurgery started for real in the 1th century. In Boston, in the Massachusetts General Hospital, the first surgery under ether anesthesia was performed in 1867.

In 18, William Macewen, a Scottish general surgeon, reported on 1 patients that he operated on for brain abscesses, 18 of whom were cured. Macewen planned his first brain surgery based on the clinical observations of Paul Broca, who was first to determine the location of the speech center of the brain. Victor A.H. Horsley, also became an important predecessor of psychosurgery, due to his invention of the sterotactic technique and apparatus, in 10. Although he developed the technique for animal experimentation, in the 40's several neurosurgeons, such as Ernst Spiegel, in the United States, and Lars Leksell, in Sweden, developed and used for the first time this technique in delicate, precise and minimally invasive brain surgery.

Harvey Williams Cushing, an American, considered the greatest neurosurgeon of the twentieth century, developed a very influential school. From 105 on, he advanced neurosurgery by developing a series of surgical techniques, which are still in use today.

Lobotomy

In 180, a German scientist named Friederich Golz, while doing surgical experiments with dogs, reported that when the temporal lobes were removed, animals were more tame and calmer than those who were not operated on.

This inspired Gottlieb Burkhardt, a physician and supervisor of an insane asylum in Switzerland, to perform in 18 an operation to remove parts of the cortex of six schizophrenic patients. Some of his patients became calmer after the surgery (two of them died). Burkgardt was opposed and criticized by the medical authorities of his time so very few psychosurgeries of this kind were done in the next forty years.

In 16, the Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz introduced a surgical operation, prefrontal leucotomy, which after an initial period came to be used particularly in the treatment of schizophrenia. The operation, later called lobotomy, consisted in incisions that destroyed connections between the prefrontal region and other parts of the brain.

At that time there did not exist any effective treatment for schizophrenia. The treatment became popular in many countries all over the world and Moniz received the Nobel Prize in 14.

Among those who followed Moniz' lead, was the nerologist and neurosurgeon team of Walter Freeman and James Wats in the United States. Freeman and Watts perfected the technique, arriving to what he called the "FreemanWatts Standard Procedure", which had a precise set of guidelines for insertion of the leukotome (the instrument for severing the frontal lobe).

Lobotomy took America and some other countries by storm. Between 1 and 151, more than 18,000 lobotomies were performed in the United States. It was widely abused as a method to control undesirable behavior. In Japan, the majority of the operated cases were children, many who simply had behavior problems or bad grades at school. Inmates at prisons for the insane were operated on, and families trying to get rid of difficult relatives would submit them to lobotomy.

Ethical objections began to pile up, because of the irreversible damage to the brain, and because of the severe effects of the surgery on the personality and emotional life of the patients. In addition, the appearance of new antipsychotic and antideppressive drugs, such as Thorazine in the 150's, gave new means to combat most of the symptoms experienced by patients. Neurosurgesns everywhere started to abandon lobotomy in favor of more humane methods of treatment.

Few political documents have affected the world quite like the American Declaration of Independence or the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. The repercussions of each have had a profound effect on world history up to this point. But why did these documents have such an effect? The answer lies in the common philosophical backgrounds of the two. The writings of Rousseau, Locke and Montesquieu all contained ideas that were later used by Thomas Jefferson and the National Assembly to compose the two documents.

Rousseaus ideas of a social contract, which states that the general will and the people were sovereign, and if a king abuses the liberty of the people they have a right and a duty to dissolve the current government and create a new one (McKay, 581), were central to both documents. Jefferson had Rousseaus ideas in mind when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. The history of the present King of Great Britain [George III] is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states...a prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people...we therefore...solemnly publish and declare, that these United Colonies are...independent states... (Jefferson, 1-). The reasons, such as suspension of colonial legislatures, impressment of American sailors and the importation of mercenaries (Jefferson, ), given for the dissolution of the political connections that the American and British people have held for over 100 years all relate to the Kings tyrannical tendencies and the peoples right to choose a different government. The edict also states that although petitions of grievances were issued, the King turned a deaf ear.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man is not only built on the social contract, but also on Rousseaus idea of general will of the people. He defines the general will as being, Sacred and absolute, reflecting the common interests of the people, who have displaced the monarch as the holder of the sovereign powers. (McKay, 581) Passing and enforcing arbitrary laws are considered to be an act of tyranny and a substantial reason, according to Rousseau, to declare the current government void and establish a new one. Article VII clearly states that arbitrary laws and orders cannot exist.(Sherman, 100) The fact that this is distinctly stated implies that arbitrary laws were being passed and enforced under Louis XVI. Article VI states that law is the expression of the general will every citizen has the right to participate personally or through his represenative.... (Sherman, 100)

Lockes ideas of natural rights, the rights of human beings to the pursuit of life, liberty, and property (McKay, 54), is clearly stated in both declarations. In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson used the exact words in the preamble - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness - in which he uses happiness to mean property.(1) He also cites examples of the arbitrary suspension of liberties by George III such as the right to peaceably assemble, taxation without the consent of the colonists, maintenance of a peacetime standing army, and the right to a trial by jury.(1-)

A reference to natural rights also appear in the preamble of the Declaration of the Rights of Man. Article II of the proclamation directly states, The aim of all political associations is the preservation of the natural ... rights of man (which are)... liberty, property, security and resistance to oppression. (Sherman, -100) Article IV defines liberty as

The freedom to do everything which injures no one else hence the exercise of the natural rights of each man has no limits except those which assures to the other members of society the enjoyment of the same rights. These limits can only be determined by law.(Sherman, 100)

The rights of freedom from arbitrary imprisonment and the idea of someone accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty (Sherman, 100) were all laid out by the national Assembly and run parallel to Lockes ideas about human rights.

Montesquieus ideas of the courts being the foremost protector of liberties (577) is used as a reason for the break with Great Britain. The justices of the admiralty or naval courts that existed in colonial America served at Kings Pleasure rather than Good Behavior, ensuring that the decisions of the courts would be biased in favor of the King. The right to a trial by jury was also suspended for those who broke the laws laid down by the Navigation acts. The colonials expressed these concerns in the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of the Rights of Man also hold Montesquieus interpretation of the courts. It provides for the right to a trial and freedom from punishments that are not strictly and obviously necessary.(Sherman 100) It also holds that all men are equal in the eyes of the law.

Both the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen have common roots in the arguments of the Enlightenment, and in the Enlightened philosophies Rousseau, Locke and Montesquieu. Rousseaus idea of a social contract, Lockes natural rights, and Montesquieus idea of the courts being the defenders of liberties all came into play when the two documents were written, and in being written, the culmination of the Enlightened thinkers came to their peak.

Discrimination Claims Process and Civil Litigation

Claims Processing

This paper is designed to help you better understand the process of filing claims with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, with the different requirements and time frames for filing as well as discussing the process for civil litigation within the legal system and how it effects the individuals concerned.

Order essays on Discrimination Claims and Civil Law and other topics

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) was developed to help protect employees from unjustly being hired or in some cases terminated from employment based on certain factors. Most of these factors are classified under discrimination, however there are listed several types of discrimination. The EEOC looks at items such as sexual harassment, equal pay and compensation, race/color, age, national origin, pregnancy, religious beliefs, Americans with Disabilities, and a few others. I feel that all of these issues can and have been abused for employment purposes in the past and could easily be abused again, without someone available to investigate these very issues. That is why the EEOC was developed. In order for the process to work, and be efficient, there must be a set process defined in order to assist the employee, but also the employer to allow for the truth to be discovered.

The process is fairly simple. When the employee feels that they have been wrongfully treated, they must report it to the EEOC office. They can do this in person, by mail, or by telephone. Once this charge has been filed, the employer will then be notified by the EEOC office of said charge. If in fact the feeling is that the initial facts reveal that a violation of law may have occurred, then it may be assigned a priority investigation. When the evidence is less strong, then an investigation will be assigned to determine if a violation has occurred. At any time the EEOC can seek to settle a charge if the charged or the charging party expresses an interest in doing so. In the investigation, written statements may be taken, document reviews, interviews of personnel, and even site visits may be performed. When the evidence has been collected, the EEOC office will then discuss the findings with the charging party or employer, as appropriate. The charge may be mediated if both parties express an interest. This is often offered as an alternative to a lengthy investigation. Participation in the mediation program is voluntary and confidential and must be agreed upon by both involved parties. A charge can be dismissed at any point, if the investigation reveals that in the agency's best judgment that a violation of law did not occur, or if enough evidence cannot be obtained in the investigation phase. When a charge is dismissed, a notice is issued in accordance with the law which gives the charging party 0 days in which to file a lawsuit on his/her behalf.

Most of the reportable items listed earlier in the paper are listed by the EEOC as under the civil rights component of their office. In this case most of the complaints have a 180 day reporting limit, if no state reporting limits are in place. If the state in which the complaint is being filed has a state limit, then this limit becomes the filing timeframe. Every filing must reach the EEOC office within 00 days or 0 days after state notification of termination of the charges. The American Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as the Age Discrimination Act (ADEA), has the same guidelines. When a complaint is filed, pertinent information, such as events, names, telephone numbers, witnesses, etc, will be beneficial to have. If a case is deemed appropriate and the complaint goes to court, the EEOC will represent itself, and will normally provide its formal legal views in what is called a "brief". As you can see, the process is not that difficult and even though the steps may be time consuming, the safety and fair treatment of employees are at stake here.

Civil Litigation

Another option that employees have when they feel that they have been mistreated is the civil courts. While some court items can be very intimidating at times, civil litigation is a fairly defined process. As we discussed earlier, the EEOC complaint process was fairly rigid in its design, so to be the civil litigation process. The civil litigation process can be broken down into eight steps. One of the main differences between criminal litigation and civil litigation is the "beyond reasonable doubt". In civil litigation a majority can rule, unlike in a criminal litigation where it has to be unanimous. OK, so the eight steps of the civil litigation process

Step One- The retention of an Attorney. This is someone who will guide the complainant through the legal process, and develop what is known as the statement of claim, which is basically the reason we are going to litigation.

Step Two- The defense. This is where the person whom has been charged with the complaint has the ability to gain information as to the charge and is usually given 10 days to do so, although most are granted an extension.

Step Three- Information gathering- this is where both parties concerned will investigate the complaint on their behalf and gather appropriate information. Much like the EEOC investigated charges at their end.

Step Four-Discovery phase-where witnesses are interview and depending on the case, maybe deposed, which is an interview under oath, that will sometimes take the place of needing to appear in court.

Step Five-Readiness Stage-where all of the issues that were uncovered during the information gathering and the discovery phase will be shared by both parties.

Step Six-Pretrial Conferences- this is where discussions are held, as far as mediation possibilities, plea agreements, etc, to avoid trial.

Step Seven-The actual trial occurs and who know what will happen. Some can occur before just a judge and others with a jury.

Step Eight if needed-appeals. This is where if you feel all the evidence was not presented or, if some actual information was miscommunicated, then an appeal can be requested. A judge will typically look at the appeal to see if it is warranted.

Conclusion

As you can see from the paper, the process to both the EEOC complaints as well as civil litigation can in fact be intimidating, however both of these processes are pretty well designed to follow a specific format, which in and of itself is not that difficult. This paper was intended to help define those processes and to allow the reader to better understand how the process is designed.

A Remarkable Man

"It was very sad, he thought. The things men carried inside. The things men did or felt they had to do. He almost nodded at her (his love), but didn't. Instead, he went back to his maps. He was now determined to perform his duties firmly and without negligence…from that point on, he would comport himself as a soldier. On the march, he would impose strict field discipline. He would accept the blame from what had happened to Ted Lavender. He would be a man about it."

-Tim O'Brien, "The Things They Carried"

The first time I read The Things They Carried by Timothy O'Brien, I immediately identified with the work. It seemed that O'Brien had a very individualistic way of looking at horrid events and experiences in a light that I emulated. The Things They Carried is O'Brien's recap of his occurrence and involvement in the Vietnam War, a war that, for some reason, interests and affects me. This quotation is one of a many that I distinctly remember. It is the paragraph in the first chapter of the book where O'Brien describes the attitude Lieutenant Jimmy Cross decides to adopt after the killing of one of his men, Ted Lavender. Before the killing Ted Lavender, Cross emits an attitude of selfishness, and ironically, at the same time one of deep love for a woman at home. His complete and udder focus on this woman caused him to lose sight of why he was in Vietnam in the first place, which was to direct and lead his division, and serve his country.

This selection helps me frame and formulate what I see as the "problem" of ethics because it shows Cross' substitution of altruism with self-interest, disorder, and resentment. Cross' job as Lieutenant was to unify his troops, create a harmony amongst them, and perpetuate an everlasting hope of survival, all while selflessly leading them and his country to victory. His constant thoughts of his love back home hindered the completion of his job. They took over his mind, altering his actions, precautions, and orders. The problem of ethics in this is that people can easily become preoccupied with people, places, things, or events they believe to be more important than the actual entity of higher value. In comparison with the problem of ethics, Cross' problem was that while he may have had best intentions in mind for his troops (his morality in theory), the actions he carried out (morality in practice) contradicted this. That is the problem with ethics; selfless thoughts and selfish actions do not always coincide and, therefore, cause dilemmas within oneself and externally.

This quotation can summarize the solution used promote the good of the troops and people in general. In a smaller picture, Cross chooses to perform his duties more seriously, dispose of the thoughts that distracted him, and adjust his troops for a better performance. In the larger picture, this translates into taking life seriously, both thoughts and actions to make sure both coincide with one another. In other words, become selfless in action and thought; want peace and harmony for everyone regardless of the cost. This, however, is not really a solution to the problem. It offers a suggestion to the attitude people should hold to achieve good ethics and morals. Unfortunately, that is a lot easier said than done, and only that person can change their views and actions to be the most moral and ethical person they can be.

O'Brien's quotation can be compared to a Machiavellian quotation used in The Prince "…And a prince ought, above all things, always to endeavor in every action to gain for himself the reputation of being a great and remarkable man (Chapter 1)." This quotation can be compared and contrasted to Tim O'Brien's quotation. In both quotations, it is suggested that every action one carries out should be great and remarkable. However, the motives behind completing each task differ. Tim O'Brien feels that one should act a certain way because it is the right thing to do. In this certain instance, he feels that Cross should act differently and "be a man about" taking his responsibility seriously. O'Brien tells of Cross' realization that life in general, not just his life and the life of his loved one, is more important than everything else. When one has responsibility over another man's life, whether it is in some small, indirect way, or in the large, direct way that Cross is responsible for Lavender's life, the reality of that liability becomes greater and the stakes become higher. Machiavelli's motive behind his quotation is less selfless and more direct. He states that every endeavor you attempt should be giving you a better name. In a way, this is comparable to O'Brien's theory on making life better for you and for others. However, what Machiavelli literally means is that if it is not going to benefit you, it should not be done.

Machiavelli and O'Brien are very hard to compare even though both have an idea about morals and ethics. Machiavelli seems to be more direct and focuses more on self-interest through actions and words. In other words, do what is in your best interest. O'Brien makes his statement directed more towards the good of people through realization and conquering of internal struggles. Because once the internal qualms are identified and dealt with, people can work towards solving the problem concerning morals and ethics.

Overall, morals and ethics differ for everyone. They are not one specific set of rules, regulations, laws, or suggestions. They are dependent on various factors and experiences throughout your life and since everyone's life is different, everyone's ethics, morals, and actions are not going to be identical. The main problem with the controversy of true morals and ethics is self-interest. The minute another entity takes over your mind is the minute all focus is lost. Once the focus of what is really good and true disappears, disunity and corruption become the result. O'Brien deals with the problem by showing Cross' internal struggle on obsessing over his love, to realizing that he is the cause of disarray in his regiment. This realization causes his actions to change to better the good of himself, his troops, and the Vietnam War. Machiavelli, on the other hand, uses his quotation to state that as long as you are completing a task that is in the best interest of yourself, it is great and remarkable. Machiavelli shows how moral and ethics do not apply as long as a goal is accomplished successfully to benefit the reputation of the people and its country, and your reputation. The self-interested way of dealing with ethics and morals leads to problematic and corrupt society where it acceptable to do things for yourself without thinking of the consequences. O'Brien preaches the exact opposite. And while both Machiavelli and O'Brien offer ideas and suggestions for solutions, the main problem remains unsolved because we are human. The minute we as humans can become completely self-less is the minute the good of all people (ethics and morals) will be true.

Assignment #5 Definition

Insomnia

Webster defines insomnia as prolonged and usually abnormal inability to obtain adequate

sleep. For people who suffer from this disorder the definition is vague at best. 10 Million

Americans consult a physician every year for sleep disorders. Another 50 million suffer in

silence. Sometimes, people who have no trouble sleeping, don't understand the problem. Many

health problems cause insomnia, and likewise insomnia can cause many health problems.

Insomniacs have symptoms from the disorder that can be confusing or frustrating to someone

close to them. Insomnia is not just a "nighttime problem," it can affect many aspects of a persons

life. Insomniacs usually tend to be very tired during the day, making it hard to concentrate.

Irritability is a common symptom of lack of sleep also.(So You Wanna 1)

People who suffer from insomnia have trouble falling asleep at night. They wake up in the

middle of the night and can't go back to sleep. Or they wake up to early in the morning. Insomnia

can be very stressful, looking at the clock every hour, watching the hours left to sleep get shorter

and shorter, until they are gone and its time to get up. Unfortunately stress is one of the biggest

causes of acute insomnia. Acute insomnia is short term. It can range from one night to a few

weeks. Other causes of acute insomnia are, illness, injury, change in working hours, and

uncomfortable sleeping conditions. Many people are very sensitive to light conditions, and

temperature when they are trying to sleep.

Chronic insomnia is a much bigger problem, and much harder to treat. Chronic insomnia

is long term it can range from three nights a week for a month, or indefinitely without proper

treatment. Causes of chronic insomnia are depression, long-term stress, or chronic pain. In this

case it is hard to treat the insomnia, because the underlying problem must be treated first. People

who have chronic insomnia, often times have depression, and stress because those symptoms feed

off each other.

Some people who have insomnia may have another sleep disorder that is causing the

problem, such as sleep apnea. Those with sleep apnea "literally stop breathing in their sleep. The

brain receives a signal to arouse the person out of sleep in order to resume breathing.

Consequently sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality."(Get The Facts 1-)

Treatment of insomnia is different case by case. Many acute cases do not require formal

treatment. Simply making a few changes in lifestyle, such as changing sleeping conditions,

waiting out an illness or injury, or getting accustomed to a new schedule. A doctor may prescribe

sleeping pills on a short term basis until the problem is resolved. Chronic insomnia on the other

hand requires treating the underlying condition. A health care provider may recommend

counseling or behavioral therapy to change behaviors that may cause the insomnia. Therapists

may suggest some relaxation exercises, or sleep restriction exercises.

Good sleep habits in general can help make sleep more refreshing and beneficial. Going

to bed at or around the same time every night, and waking at the same time every morning will

establish a good sleep routine, and the body will adjust accordingly. No matter how enjoyable a

nap sounds, try to avoid it. Move more, getting regular exercise will be relaxing, as long as it's

not to close to bed time. Reading a book or taking a bath before bed is very relaxing also. Don't

lay in bed tossing and turning, get up and do something relaxing. Laying in bed will cause more

stress, it's better to try not to think about it. Insomnia is a lonely disorder, because its victims

feel helpless. A lot of times the treatments talked about previously don't always work, and the

person may give up trying.

I myself suffer from chronic insomnia, so I know how it feels. Not getting a good nights

rest, or any rest at all is very hard the next day. When I get home from school or work, the first

thing I want to do is take a nap, because I am exhausted. I know I'm not suppose to take a nap, or

I won't be tired at bedtime. Then I think to myself, I'm never tired at bed time anyway, so if I

take a nap at least I will be able to spend some quality time with my boy friend, when he gets

home. I never can tell what's going to keep me awake. All sleeping conditions have to be perfect.

A ticking clock that I didn't even notice one night will keep me awake the next night. I have been

known to put our clock in the kitchen cupboard in the middle of the night, because just placing it

in another room, I can still hear it a slightly. One night I won't be able to sleep without the fan on,

because it's hot, the next night, the sound of that same fan drives me crazy.

I know that my chronic insomnia is caused by stress. My bouts with insomnia do go away

from time to time. I am a worrier, and always have been, so at least I know how to stop the cycle,

by stopping the stress that's happening at the time. For instance this week, I have four papers due

for school, I started a new job, and my forty five year old aunt (whom I am very close to) is

having brain surgery, how much sleep do you think I will get this week?

Alcohol in College

Alcohol is a huge problem on most college campuses. Twenty one may be the legal drinking age, but some how minors find a way to get a hold of alcohol. People as young as fifteen are able to get their hands on an alcoholic beverage. Alcohol is said to be the chosen drug among college students. College students have a tendency to drink more then the general population. The type of college, geographical location, the ethnic and gender makeup plays a role in the amount of drinking that occurs on campus (Shalala, 1). For example colleges with fraternities and sororities have higher statistics; this is because of their sponsored parties (Shalala, ). They drink more often, which contributes to heavier drinking. Alcohol is known to affect many different types of people; housewives, church members, and successful business owners. But college students seem to be especially affected by alcohol (Encarta, 1). There are many different steps that are being taken to diffuse the drinking on college campuses. Colleges are starting programs for alcoholic students, establishing rules and moral codes on campus, and even banishing alcoholic advertisements on campus.

Studies show that college students drink more when they are in a group, which speaks on peer influences. When it comes to drinking on campus there is no legal age so to speak. When someone goes to a party they dont get carded, they get a cup. Studies show that students between the ages of 18-1 drink more then those that are over 1 (Shalala, ). Forty one percent of college students report to binge drinking, and nearly four percent drink daily (Shalala, ). Binge drinking is defined as four drinks for a woman in one sitting, and five drinks for a male in one sitting. Students that binge drinker have even more problems then students who dont. Binge drinkers are more likely to have hangovers and engage themselves in unplanned sexual activity (Shalala, ). Alcohol, in small amounts, may relieve tension, fatigue, or produce an affect that numbs pain (Encarta, ). There are endless consequences that come with drinking. A range of problems occur due to alcohol consumption. If large amounts of alcohol are consumed, complete loss of physical control may follow, ending in stupor, possibly even in death (Encarta, ). The most popular problem that occurs with drinking is academic problems; others include things such as trauma, date rape, recklessness, vandalism and pregnancy in women. There are many organizations that are trying to reduce these terrible statistics. Two for instance are MADD and SADD. These organizations help to raise awareness about alcohol and all its dangers. Some organizations, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, help alcoholics recover with long-term group therapy, in some cases-even hospitalization (Encarta, 6). Recovery may even involve individual counseling (Encarta, 6). Most treatment programs used for long term periods are effective, but are less successful in shorter sessions (Encarta, 6). Colleges have even devised plans to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed on their campuses. A college should provide students with alternate activities, in order to prevent then from drinking. Campus facilities should remain open, and colleges should expand their recreational activities on nights and weekends. Many colleges have strict rules and regulation concerning alcohol. Here are some more ways that colleges are trying to prevent and reduce alcohol problems. First, they enforce their rules and regulations. Failure to abide by these rules will result in a fine, probation, community service, or even suspension in the severe cases. Secondly, they reduce availability by banning beer, and parties on campus. Thirdly, colleges have been banning advertising alcoholic beverages in school newspapers and throughout the campus.

Most colleges feel that advertisement has a big influence on students. It not only puts the idea in their head, but it also advertises cheap beer. If students know that a certain beer is cheap that will give then an incentive to go out and buy the beer. Another way that colleges are trying to reduce the alcohol consumption is buy counseling. Buy constantly reinforcing the dangers of drinking, colleges hope that students will listen and stop drinking. I decided to interview one of my old teachers, in order to get her opinion about alcohol on college campuses. She has a son that is presently looking for a college. I was curious to see how she felt about sending her son away to a college, with all the talk about alcohol on campuses. After talking with my teacher I realized that every parent is worried about the amount of alcohol on college campuses.

Order essays on alcohol in college and other topics

She said that she was very nervous and worried about the amount of alcohol on college campuses. She also said that she feels confident that her son will make responsible decisions while in college. Parents often talk to their children about drugs and alcohol, and my professor has already had a discussion with her so. I feel that parents do have their childs best interest in mind. Parents are not dumb they know what goes on at college. Most parents are prepared for the stories and the talks. My feelings on drinking have greatly changed after attending college. In high school, I used to party all the time. The parties in high school were nothing like the ones at college. Now I know why everyone says that you havent been to a party, until youve been to a college party. I never witnessed binge drinking until I came to college. I have no problem with partying. Sure I like to drink, once in a while, but not everyday. Here on campus the parties start on Wednesday, and go until Saturday. Even before Wednesday people are talking about drinking and which house is having the party.

I feel that drinking in college get extremely out of control. In the semesters that I have been here, I have heard, and saw some scary things. One girl in a class of mine almost got raped because a guy was too drunk. Another girl at my school lost her virginity to a guy she didnt know, because they were both so hammered. Alcohol is not only a dangerous drug, but it also can make or break you. The girl that lost her virginity now has a horrible reputation and no one wants to be seen with her. I know so many people that have messed around with guys because they were drunk. I dont know about you but I dont think I could mess around with someone that I dont know, and on top of that hardly remember what happened. Alcohol is an extremely addictive and dangerous. There are some many college students that have either ruined their reputation or gotten kicked out of their school because of alcohol. Honestly, does stumbling, vomiting, and basically looking like a fool sound fun? I dont think so. Perhaps someday public health organizations will enable society to identify the early signs of drinking habits and help people to over come their alcoholism before their condition worsens (Encarta, 7). If you are going to drink, at least have control, drink in moderation and be careful. I know that when I drink I never leave my friends, nor do I drink too much, because I have people that watch out for me. Getting drunk doesnt need to be a rite of passage, and hangovers arent a prerequisite for graduation (Shalala, 1).
