Change is all around us and as the saying goes, "change is as good as a holiday", however holidays don't always go as planned. For you doing the H.S.C soon, things have been changing quite a lot and the change can be quite scary, you just wish things could be easy again like in yr 7. This isn't going to happen so we need to find ways to deal with the change and get passed the H.S.C. We see examples of change all around us, even in our school work, such as Gwen Harwood's poetry. This article will help you find ways to deal with the change you are experiencing, you will survive the H.S.C!

Through reading In The Park by Gwen Harwood we see a clear view of the change one woman has experienced. The choices we make now affect our whole lives and we therefore must think clearly before we make decisions. "She whispered to the wind, they have eaten me alive", here Gwen talks about how many young women don't know the demands of being a mother and that this choice that led to her having kids was life changing for the woman in the poem, so in other words think about your choices before you make them because they may affect your future greatly. The woman in In The Park has made dreadful choices in her life and they have come back to haunt her, she has been left all alone to bring up these kids because she relied on somebody else, she had nothing to fall back on and when things went wrong she had no options. The reinforces the idea of making wise choices and thinking about your actions before you act, because things may go wrong and people may let you down, you need to depend on yourself and look out for yourself because we know for sure that you will always be there for help when you need it, other people may not.

At Mornington by Gwen Harwood also with change; however the woman in this poem deals with her change more effectively. She comes to accept her change and she doesn't try to fight it because she knows that the change in her life is inevitable. The change she has experienced is the changes in life; from childhood to adulthood as well as life and death. You could learn from this woman because change happens and it's better to deal with it rather than to fight it. Would you rather be happy and accept things or fight them and become stress and depressed? It's not worth it.

Change is inescapable, time produces many events and experiences in our journey of life. These events, sometimes unknowingly, transform who we are as time passes, and you have to come to accept this. In Mother who gave me Life a woman loses her mother and rather than worry about her death she decides to remember her life and the wonderful things her mother has done for her, even when she was on her death bed, "somehow, smooth to a smile so I should not see your tears". "A lamp on embroidered linen", most likely embroidered by her mother, this shows her hard work and her care for the family. The woman is this poem has lost time with her mother and is regretful of that, "Forgive me the wisdom I would not learn from you", however she knows this cannot be changed so she accepts it and moves along. Acceptance is the best way to deal with change especially when the change is inevitable.

College papers on Why do things have to change?

The end of the H.S.C means the start of life in the real world and the start of your responsibilities. Most of you guys doing the H.S.C will also know the BOS booklet and the text Sky High, this is another example of deal and accepting change. The girl in this text is reminiscing her childhood and contrasting it with her life now. When she was a child she "Edge out along one skeletal arm, then, from a sitting position I swing upside-down" however now as an adult "it is unlikely the washing line could support me this time", this show hers increased responsibility and also her acceptance of her life. She has grown and changed and now "there are too many things tying me to the ground". The girl in this text seems a little bit sad by her change however she has accepted it and will live her life and have fun.

The article I'm not as bad as you were Mum tells of a mother's acceptance of her daughters change, and also her worry over her daughters change. The mother was a fairly wild child in her day and is worried that her daughter may be doing the sorts of things she got up to, such as drinking and sex. The mother does anguish over her daughter's decisions and wants to know what she's up to, "so the talk was had. "I know, Mum ," was the response. But how much does she know? And do I want to know how much she knows? And is it any of my business to know exactly what's going on in her mind and her life?" Now we've all had this talk with one of our parents once in our lives but now we see their point of view, they're just worried. The mother accepts that she can't know everything about her daughter's life, "Even if my children do take after their mother, maybe everything will turn out all right in the end anyway". So instead of being worried and stressed the mother decides to trust her daughter and wish for the best. What a good idea.

So as you see change can come in many different forms ranging from growth to death, however all these forms of change can be dealt with and accepted. You may not want things to change but they are no matter what so it's better to deal with and accept your change so you don't become stress and make the wrong choices, such as the woman in In the Park. Learn from other people such as the ones in the above texts and always think about your actions and do the right thing. So to all of you good luck have fun and don't worry there is life beyond the H.S.C.

Constitutional Analysis

I believe that the most important part of the constitution is the fact that there is no most important part of the constitution. The entire document stands out as the most important document in the US. One part does not jump out as more important than any other part. The best part is that there is no best part and it works together to insure all our freedoms and set up a system of government. What would the US be without the freedom of speech guaranteed in the 1st amendment? The US would not have the true freedom of speech if blacks, women, or 18 year olds could not vote. Those groups would not truly have freedom of speech if they were not able to vote thanks to the 15th, 1th, and 6th amendments. What if the president was able to declare war? The country might have turned into a dictatorship of some sort with a war-mongering president. Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 says that congress has the power to declare war so that the president does not become too powerful. Also, consider the debates without the clause 18 of section 8 of article 1, which serves as the elastic clause for the powers of congress. Without this clause there would be constant strife over what the enumerated powers of congress really are.

The whole basis of the Constitution is the equality of all the powers. The separation of power with checks and balances means that all parties are equally powerful and have and equal say in the issues facing the country. While these powers are equal they are very different at the same time. The president can propose a bill, the congress can pass it and then the Supreme Court can rule that the bill is unconstitutional. Each of those branches is equally important to the bill's adaptation in US society. Each branch can veto the measure but one is not more important than the other. That is like asking whether the father or the mother is more important to the process of creating a child. Each has its own role and each is significant and important in its own way.

The first amendment has been the most publicized and tried amendment in the Constitution. The cases range from 11 Shenck v United States when the famous ruling involving "shouting fire in a theatre" and "clear and present danger" were initially stated. Then in 16 in Tinker v Des Moines School District the court ruled that you do not shed your rights at the school gate. From these cases to the bizarre 188 case between Hustler Magazine and Jerry Falwell where the court ruled that jokes or political cartoons do no count as character defamation. These cases and so many others have been far-reaching and diverse in the rulings reaffirming your 1st amendment rights and restricting them during certain situations that would create clear and present danger.

Professional writers help on constitution analysis essays

The voting amendments have truly been crucial to the development of the country. Try to imagine an election today in which people of minority races were not allowed to vote. The Republican Party would win virtually every election and the Democratic Party with minority planks would not exist. The course of American history would be altered without the minority vote. Also, the women of America staged a suffrage movement in the early 100's. The movement led to the future ascending of the business ladder by all sorts of women. This infusion of new ideas and new policy is critical to the economy. Also the war in Vietnam brought about new voting rights for 18 year olds. The young people who were drafted and were dying for the country felt they should have the right to vote so through protests and awareness they received the right to vote. This young person vote helped to elect the most famous governor ever, Jessie Ventura.

The power to declare war is a critical power that can change the outlook of a country. If the president had the power to declare war instead of the congress it is possible that a US president could become a rouge military leader. While the president is the commander of the armed forces and has the power to take military action the congress can order the action to stop after a time of 60 days. This clause has a great meaning in today's politics. If the president were unchecked in his command of the armed forces, Bush would absolutely be going into Iraq whenever he wanted. He would wait until the weather was favorable and then just go. Because congress does have the power to declare war he sought the approval of the congress in the form of a resolution that would allow him the power to enter into war with Iraq if Iraq does not comply with UN resolutions. The power to declare war is another important part of the Constitution.

The elastic clause is just as important as any of the other clauses or amendments to the Constitution. The elastic clause says that the congress shall have the power "To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers." Without this clause the congress would not have been able to create a national bank or purchase the Louisiana territory from Napoleon. This flexibility allows for the modern intent of the law to be carried out. Also this flexible interpretation of the constitution has proved critical in many court cases regarding the intent of the law or the explicit wording of the law.

All of these parts of the Constitution are critical influences on how we live our lives today and you cannot rank any of them more important than the next. The Constitution is a great document because there are no weak, unimportant parts. Each clause, each amendment serves a unique purpose in setting up the greatest government the world has ever known.

ESSAY

"Consumerism encourages conformity and undermines moral and ethical values in our society"

This is portrayed throught the media in modern society. Bruce dawe tapps into this worlds unethical materialistic views and ecpressed them throught the use of satire, black humour, pesonificaltion imagery and sarcasm.

In the Poem Enterwithout so much as knocking, Dawe satirically critsises the family the baby is born into, as they have conformed to the consumer drivin worlds ideals of a average family.

"as any well equipped smoothly run household, containe one ecconomy sized mum and one anthony squires coolstream summerweight dad"

This quote has a tone of patronism this tone is conveyed to the audience and makes us skeptical of the outcome of the family.

Dawe suggest through this poem how completely innocent thing such as a baby can become corrupted and conformed into unethical and un moral people.

Dawe portarys the stab in the back attitude of the grown up child and uses chliches to show the audience how shallow minded and heartles the world of material possestions had made him "kick whoevers down, number one every time for this chicken"

The same theme of the heartless unsympathetic unreverened attitudes of the world of advertising are shown also in breakthrough.

"a little girl is reported to have died happily in hospital singing a advertising commercial.

To the audience this introduction sets a so natural for a child to be affected by television.

Dawes tone in this paragraph is factual and definate, news, reporter like, it makes it unpersonal for the audience there is no sadness, etc.

The way consumerism is conveyed in this poem is the comercialisation of religion and heaven dawe conveys how nothing is sacred to advertising companies they will destroy anyone or anything to premote their product even exploit a little girls death in order to open up a new market in heaven.

Stand by all angelic host angels backed up by guitars

The way people have been sold out to consumerism has been depicted in the song sell out by george. album poly serena 001

In this song it explains how people conform to societys expectations and needs.

' I knew you before you entered through the deadly door its eaten away at you its givin you the itch your dreaming of returning but you don't think you can"

Metaphorically the door represents the selling out of a pesons life force or soul to influences that dehumanise themselves, this is suported when they say ' they dont mind to blacken your stream they are pulling you along" They is used repitiotiously so to personify the force of advertising.

'Blacken your stream" corrupt your mind the repitition in the song of "they dont" reinforces to the audience how the media has brought people to loose all ethical value in their life.

All these ideas of consumerism can be sumed up in the documentary Unreal images. The focus of the video is the images conveyed through the media and the messages they are sending to their target audience.

"she's beautifull he's gorgeous" Marlee at the beginging of the film has been consumed by the ifluence of the media and has been influenced by the messages they have sent her.

Pip hasn't so much been affected she realises that not everything she sees is real.

"do you find that when you feature something in a magazine people buy it?...... yes definaterly retailers love being in the mag because they get allot of calls,"

The advertising in the magazine influences teenage girls who want to be perfect, they see it they want it because they think they will be better off with it.

The magazine plays on girls securities on self image.

"our message is to be happy with who you are' this is contradicted all the way through the magazine and documentary, computer enhansing is mention repetitavely, "we can fix the little things" "the natural look" pluck blush surl etc. " I have used a bottle of product to achive this 'natural look"

There is a demand for conformity and the undermining of the morals and ethics in all media products especially in the modern gerneration with the thought that,

"because I need it I deserve it because I deserve it I will do anything nessasary to obtain it"

Consumerism sets each person against themselves in the endless quest for the attainment of material goods and the imaginary world conjured up by things yet to be purchased.

All four texts are and expression of the need to find ourselves again after consumerism has taken away our individuality personality and identity, the text point out how our lives have been manipulated to conform to this consumeristic world that has been conjured up by world companies.

What is Dream Analysis? Dream Analysis is the process of taking your own dreams that you have and breaking them down to have a greater meaning then they possess on the surface. Dreams are like warning signals in your mind of what is to come in your future. Dream analysis is really what you want it to be, it can be used as a way of entertainment for your life or for a way of telling the future in your life. In order to use dream analysis one must follow some steps to prepare your self to assess your dreams. First off you need some sort of note book to record your dreams when you have them,

Believe it or not there actually is a proper way to sleep to be able to remember your dream and then asses it. You must first relax your self completely before taking your nap. As you are falling asleep the main thing on your mind should be the main "theme" in your life you are concerned about, and a sub thought that you are going to remember your dream. How ever you should really concentrate to hard as it will keep you awake. You must also plan on waking up slowly so nothing is shaken from you. The number one reason that we don't remember our dreams is because we don't get enough sleep. The last thing that is vital to remembering your dreams is your health, make sure you take all your vitamins and such, poor nutrition is another cause of forgetting your dreams.

Most dreams however are not prophetic. If one was to assume that every dream was they would often find them selves with allot of misinterpretations. Your dreams about your self and only your self 0% of the time. After having a dream you should categorize it with a certain theme that is going on in your life at that time. You want to put it into a theme so you get that "ah hah" feeling inside you like it fits there.

Along these lines there are also some universal symbols in dream analysis that you should know if you plan one using this method. They simply are animals, automobiles or vehicles, children, clothing, death, buildings, and people. Now let's break these main themes down one by one.

Essay service for your Dream analysis paper

Animals, when you see animals in your dreams this usually is signifying a bad trait. It is easier for us to look bat at an animal in disgust at what they are doing, which in turn can be symbolizing how you should feel. A good example of this which I found online would be this, "a woman on a diet and really wants to loose weight but is prone to binge eating. She has tried and failed many times, but this time has resolve. That night in a moment of weakness, she eats a big slice of cake, and a bowl of ice cream. That night she dreams of being on a farm on a cloudy day, and watching in disgust as a big manure covered sow eats and sucks non-stop at her sloop. She is astonished and ashamed when she noticed what the sow was eating! (cake and ice cream). It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out what that dream means, or what the animal symbolized! Her dream was telling her she would feel about as good about herself as she felt about the sow if she did not control her eating." This shows how animals can be used to teach our selves a lesson.

Automobiles, Vehicles that you're riding in usually reflect one of two things, the direction you are heading in life or you body. The condition of which the car is in might represent the condition of your life or body. So if you are dreaming of a brand new corvette, flying down the road with your favorite song playing things are looking good. However, if you are driving a beat up piece of junk on a stormy night, things probally aren't going to well. Results may very if you are a mechanic or such that is exposed to vehicles all day.

Children, A child represents to most people something new coming up in our lives. You base how well the new thing in your life is going to go based on the child's actions in the dream. If he is pleasant and easy to work with or if he is nasty and rude, this will tell you if it going to have the positive or negative outcome or overall effect.

Clothing, Clothing is something that you as a person often vary depending on how you feel, there for clothing represents the type of mood or the state of mind that you are in. It can also signify attitude, and the face in which we put on for the public to see us as. Also, a commonly overlooked clue is sometimes you see clothes on a clothes line, or lying around. It would be a good idea to take note as to what style and condition the clothes you see are.

Death, Any dream that you have about death is going to represent some type of change in your life. It can represent a change in your life, attitude, or emotional balance. These dreams usually show that you have a fear of change, usually the type of change is in your general life or some type of threat, and on the rare occasion they actually symbolize death.

Buildings, Buildings symbolize a certain area on your life such as maybe your profession. A bathroom may pertain to your general health and hygiene habits, and a kitchen might be about your eating and nutrition. These kinds of dreams are often prophetic. You should always write down and analyze the dreams of your childhood. When you dream if great buildings like cathedrals and large churches this usually means that the dream has a great meaning, and should be taken seriously.

People, People represent your own personality traits and these are the traits that you need to improve in your life, or if they are negative you need to work on getting rid of them. You should immediately ask of yourself, what traits do I like, and what traits do I dislike in the characters I dream about?

So in conclusion Dream analysis can be very beneficial to a person understanding what is going on in their lives. If you really break down your dreams the right way you will be surprised at how much you actually learn about your self!

Please note that this sample paper on Dream analysis is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Dream analysis, we are here to assist you. Is college right for me and you? That's the question that Caroline Bird is asking in her article in the Signature Magazine. The article suggest that all students, whenever they get out of high school, should not always go straight to college, because college is not for everybody. I will, without a shadow of a doubt, prove that college does not fail us as young people and that although college is not for everybody, they are for most people now of days.

The main argument against college is that the kids who go to college do not belong there. "Almost 50 percent of high school graduates are going to college," says Caroline. The more and more that high school graduates go to college, the more and more that certain people should not be there. More and more people are going to college just to party and have fun, not to go and study. This is what Caroline is trying to say college is not for everybody. She is right, college isn't for everybody. I agree with that. Lots of people come to college without even wanting to study, all they want to do is have fun away from home. Since I have been here, I have seen just that. But the thing that she does not realize is that most people who don't belong in college drop out or get kicked out the first semester they are there so it really does not matter. She gives many great arguments about how college does fail us as students and that people should think twice about coming to college.

When she say," college people do not just go to school so that they can make money, they want a job that means something to society." (65) That is true for about 10 percent of all students in college. Most people want to go into a field that they can make plenty of money in because when it really comes down to it, money makes the whole world go around. Seriously, if you love your job but you don't get paid hardly anything for it, although you might be happy in your job, it will give you other problems dealing with money because you do not have enough money to pay all your bills. The key is going into a field that you will enjoy working at and that you will be stable with the money part.

She states on page 66 that in the field of psychology, that over 58,000 people will get degrees in that field but only about 4,00 new jobs will be open for those people. That is true, but she fails to state the jobs of an athletic trainer which is the most demanding job out there right now. Basically the numbers are reversed from the other statement I just made. More people are wanting an athletic trainer than people are getting degrees for. In every statement she gives on page 66, it's always the jobs that so many people are going for and not enough jobs for all these people.

School papers on Truth or Lies

Another plus for college graduates is that most people look at us with a higher amount of respect if we actually go and finish college than if somebody only finishes high school. People know how hard it is to go through the many years it takes to finish college and the huge amount of stress that goes along with it. On page 68 she states that we know how to budget our time better, meet deadlines, set priorities, cope with authority, follow directions, and stick with a task without having direct supervision right on top of them all the time. That is real good for an employer because they believe they can count on us more often than not.

Another point she makes on page 6 is that college is really expensive. Most colleges and universities are anywhere from 10,000 a year up to 0,000 a year. I can't find any fault in that statement of her's because in my opinion, college is way to expensive. The education that we get might not be worth 0,000 dollars a year for four years. That's over 10,000 dollars a year. What average can really afford that on top of everything else they have to pay for? Do not forget about the poorer people out there, they can barely afford their house and car payments and you want them to pay 0,000 a year for school? You can't really ask them to do that.

Caroline Bird says on page 70 that, " the biggest defense of college is that while it may not teach you anything vocationally, it somehow makes you a better person, able to do anything better, and those that make it through the precess are initiated into the fellowship of educated men and women." I agree with that statement to some extent. I have not finished college yet, so I really don't know the final outcome for me yet. I do know what people have told me and what I have read through other things, and it always to some point come out the same. No matter what you think about college, in the end when you wrap it all up, college is a real good experience for you when you grow up a lot and have to deal with a lot of things on your own.

Another point that Caroline makes against college is that no longer is the availability of the information limited now for the public, but now it's the other way around. The public can now choose many different forms to take and learn about. In just one area now, there are about 0-0 different courses and times to where just about anybody can fit it in there schedule. She says on page 71 that you can find the information anywhere like in paperback, public libraries, museums, public lectures, adult-education classes, in abridge form, or adapted form in a magazine, film and television. So there is no excuse today to not get educated.

I think to wrap it up that Caroline Bird is a very thoughtful person and made some very good points to why college does not work for everybody. My thesis was to prove without a shadow of a dought that college was a very helpful tool for us to use. I proved my thesis but not totally. When it all comes down to it, it is up to the person themselves, if they are ready for college or not because if they are not they will fail, plain and simple.

If I were to say the word "Nazi" the first few things to pop into your mind would most likely be killing Jews, World War II, Adolf Hitler, and the brutality towards Jews. Although all of these were big parts to the Nazi party there was still one more hug factor. The most crazed, brutal man, who still would claim he was just following orders, was Adolf Eichmann. He, with the help of his "Eichmann Hobby Shops" or gas chambers, ended up killing millions of Jews while serving under Adolf Hitler.

Born in 106 in Solingen, Germany, this brother- to-five seemed to be merely another normal child destined to grow up to be some average business man. His father was a stern and an accountant and it seemed as though little Eichmann would grow up to be like his father. Trouble began to brew, though, as he moved to Linz, Austria after his father remarried. When Adolf Eichmann grew to be 16 years of age and ended up dropping out of school. Ironically, the school he dropped out of was the same exact school Adolf Hitler dropped out of just 0 years or so before. As time went on during the 10's Adolf needed to get money so he began to do odd jobs, and while working as a traveling salesman he first heard Hitler speak on the radio and instantly became intrigued. That was it, the one moment that decided his fate, the moment when he decided that he wanted to join the Nazi party.

The National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nazi) started out as a small anti-Jewish group in 118 but when Hitler became the leader of the Nazis in 11 he began to improve upon it. Finally, in 14, Adolf Eichmann joined the Nazis in the SS section of military section. Through his training his discovered his great ability to endure severe pain as well as his love for precision and order. After a few hard years in the SS he decided to join the SD, the special operations section of the Nazi party, and as a result moved to Berlin, Germany, the capital. Throughout his work he read to very important books suggested by his boss in the SD. They were both on Zionism, the belief that Jews should live in their own nation while others live in theirs. This goes along with how he always said that he enjoyed sending Jews out of the country. Later on he became the SD's expert on Jews after learning Hebrew and Yiddish, and finally, after being promoted four times between 17 and 141, became the director of the Jewish Emigration Office.

Exterminating Jews became the Nazi's greatest problem. Exterminating them with standard shooting got very expensive and ores for the bullets got scarce. This is where Adolf Eichmann comes in. He was assigned the task of finding a cost efficient way of exterminating large amounts of Jews. Although he and many other members of the Nazi party felt sympathy for the Jews and if it were up to them they wouldn't kill the Jews, he still went on looking for a new way of killing the Jews. Finally after a few weeks of hard thinking he came up with large rooms that would fill up with poisonous gas. These rooms, most well known as gas chambers or "Eichmann Hobby Shops," were made to look like showers with shower head-like objects hanging from the ceiling. The Jews were tricking into thinking they could be cleaned and were brought into the large dark room. Then when they least expected it the gases would leak into the room and the Jews would be in for a long and painful death. As the Jews were dieing, though, Nazi officers would stand in the same room with gas masks on and did this as a training exercise. The Nazis kept on killing even though the war was surely over for them.

After the war was over Eichmann knew he would be searched for by Israel as well as America. To avoid being caught in the first place he would always keep a low rank even if he could easily make it to the top the SD. Many other officers were very confused about this and couldn't quite understand why he wouldn't except a higher position. He has even been compared to a weasel by his fellow Nazi members because he could kill and the disappear quickly and without accusing. Finally his luck changed and the Americans caught him but let him go after being convinced by him that he was a clerk.

After realizing that he could be caught now he moved to Argentina to avoid secret agents in 150. His family later followed in 15. To further throw off agents he changed his name to Richard Klement and took a job at a local automobile factory.

It is , of course, impossible to hide forever and this showed as Adolf Eichmann or Richard Klement was arrested by Israeli agents. While in jail he couldn't even eat of go to the bathroom unless specifically ordered to. After a few long years in an Israeli prison he finally executed by hanging in 150.

Through out this nation's history the "American Dream" has varied greatly. During the time when Columbus arrived in America the thought or dream was that "life was richer, freer and better than they had ever known" (Columbus discovers… pg. 1). However, in reality

The earthly paradise that Columbus had described turned

out to contain snakes and malaria and fierce Indians (Columbus discovers… pg. 1),

this is what they found when they landed. An English pioneer named Thomas More introduced this idea of Utopia, meaning "no place at all" or made up world. Utopia (his book) was full of guidelines and structure which helped "shape the American character" (Columbus discovers… pg. 1). Later in the 17th century a new American dream surfaced, this of religious and moral deliverance. Likewise to the previous dream the reality at this time was savages still roamed the new land. The English believed that there was enough room for the two of them. Nevertheless, as the English population grew, so did their need for land. The English flocked to the new land to seek moral, economic and social salvation (Winthrop D. Jordan pg. 1). This was later referred to as the "great migration," (160-1650). In Europe the puritans were persecuted for practicing a non-European religion. On the other hand, when they relocated in America they were able to believe in what ever they wanted, hence "free".

Write a research paper on "The many stages of the American Dream"

Behind the idyllic descriptions of the Indians lay their own

memories of hardship and turmoil at home and their longing

for something better (Columbus discovers pg. 1).

Although, the new comers did find what the reality really was soon enough. They quickly realized that to survive they must work the land and make a living. Consequently, the puritans found that living free of persecution and harassment came at a cost. Still, more and more English arrived on the east shores seeking salvation in this New World. Word was not reaching Europe about the sacrifice that came with achieving freedom, yet who knows if that would have turned them away. Also, some desired the New World because they were forced to fight agents their own volition in the English civil wars.

Soon after, in the 18th to 1th century America has shifted gears and was now interested in settling in the west. This was known as the frontier period of this nation. At this time, the American Dream has also shifted. The new stress was on nature and the wilderness. The idea of God being in nature drove people to become one with nature in an attempt to be closer with God.

The romantics' fascination with the nature world as a symbol

paralleled society's view of the potential to be found in the

wilderness ( William Goetzmann pg. 1).

The pioneers who headed west were greeted with a vast area of land at their disposal. But what they didn't take in to consideration was the same Indians that they pushed out of the East Coast would be settled in the Midwest. With confrontation came feud, and with feud came fighting. Although America prefers to brush aside the fact that they massacred a majority of the Indians it does not delude the terrible truth that they did. An English Philosopher named John Locke coined "state of nature" which people believed in as them having natural rights. The frontier gave followers the choice to understand the freedom and equal opportunity that they are given as Americans. By living hand and hand with nature one can start over or be "born again," throwing away titles and differences. Here one is judged on their character and willingness. Still through the 1th century the frontier was going strong. Mostly due to the reality that one can succeed if they put the time and effort into it. Unlike the east, a man can work all day and be rewarded and lionized for his accomplishment. Now, the emphasis is on technology rather than religion and escaping persecution. The American dream has altered in the 0th century to having a secure job, being and feeling safe, having ones children end up better than the previous generation, and having an education that will bring success. These would be the new guidelines to add Tomas More's book.

America is not a great and powerful nation because the

most brilliant and talented people came here. America is great and

powerful because it was the ordinary people like you and me have

had more opportunity and more freedom than any other people on

the planet. With that opportunity and freedom, ordinary people like

us have been able to do extraordinary things (Phil Gramm pg. 1).

When asked, an elder will ramble on about freedom and equality, but do they really think about it when they are not talking about it? This is a horrible truth to today. It has seemed that over the years the American dream has taken the back burner in many peoples lives. It takes a horrific event like the September 11th attack to make the citizens think about how far Americans have come.

When thinking about the American dream thoughts of or army, navy and marines in far away lands come up. How much they give for the people of the United States to be free is amazing. In The American Reporter web page there was an article written about the U.S Special Forces in Afghanistan.

At the airfield, Rangers leafed behind an 8" by 10"

sign reading "FREEDOM ENDURES" (Joe Shea pg. 1)

This truly shows the common trend between all of the American dreams, and that is freedom. Without freedom America would not be America, which is what sets it apart from any other nation in the world. No matter it be the 15 hundreds or the 0th century, the statement "freedom endures" will always fit the role of the American Dream.

The new world.

It was an ordinary morning at the Bhowmicks. Mr. Bhowmick got up at 54 a.m., woke his wife, who got up and made breakfast. Meanwhile Mr. Bhowmick declared his prayers to Kali-Mata, the benefactor goddess of his family. The Hindu sculpture was an heirloom from his mother and reminded him of his childhood back in North East India. Mrs. Bhowmick was an agnostic. She did not believed in prayers or any other religious things. She habitually complained, which leaded to dilemmas and a lot of discussions. Also this morning a debate was taking place. This time it was about how the dutiful Mr. Bhowmick did not wanted to talk about his feelings. As he recovered from his spiritual experience, where he discovered how sassy Kali-Mata's tongue was, which he analysed to be a warning and that he should watch out for sinners. Mr. Bhowmick ate his French toast and went out to his Oldsmobile. On the other side of the fence, the modern neighbour, Al Stazniak existentially sneezed. But to Mr. Bhowmick it was more than a sneeze. It was a warning. So he went inside, hoping nobody was home, so he could re-start his trip. Just as he made his entry, he could hear his daughter, Babli throwing up in the bathroom. He knew right away that she was pregnant. He asked her if she was all right, with the thoughts that she was going to have an abortion and that this whole situation was his wife's fault.

This situation leads to another problem in the family. I think the reason this family has so many problems is because they all have different opinions and charisma. Mr. Bhowmick is a dutiful, guarded man. He works as an engineer with General Motors. He has a twenty-six year old daughter, Babli who still lives at home. She is an electrical engineer. He has this ritual, that he every morning is going to pray. It has been a tradition since he was a child in Ranchi. He admires his wife for having the courage to be an agnostic, but he sticks to his spiritual sacrament. It sounds like he is suppressed and dormant by his wife. Even though Mrs. Browmick has bought pop psychology paperbacks, which is for couples that want to talk about their problems and solve them, I think this family has an affect deficit. Mrs. Browmick also nagged Mr. Browmick once in a while. To get back at her, Mr. Browmick has threatened to beat her with his shoe as his father used to threaten his mother. I think Mr. And Mrs. Bhowmick gives each other challenge. I think they love and need each other, like every other husbands and wives.

As said before Babli still lives at home. So she without a doubt has to have a good relationship with her parents, but she does not confess to her parents that she is pregnant. She is suddenly afraid that she has made a wrong decision. She does not want to disappoint her parents. I think that is the reason she does not want to tell them about the situation. But it comes to a point where she has to face them, and it really disappoints Mrs. Bhowmick. My impression of Babli is that she wants to live her own life, but is kind of insecure, so she lives her life safe. I do not think the parents know the real Babli. They see the surface they want to see, and then suddenly Babli makes her own decision and actually gets a personality, and they just worries about the family reputation. I think the relationship between Babli and her parents is superficial.

This situation could be a reason why the novel is called the new world. Babli is making a new world for herself and the coming baby. Another aspects could be when Mr. Bhowmick executes his spiritual ritual, then he sort of goes to this new world. The significance with Kali-Mata is that it gives the warning. I think this religious sculpture leads to the message in the text. It sort of tells whom to believe and that you have some kind of guide in your life.

I hope that Babli decides to have the baby and move to a place by herself. I think this situation has made Mr. Bhowmick more secure on his believes. But I think the really ending ends with Babli having and abortion.

Translation

In Ranchi, family Bhowmick had not been very well liked, especially because Mrs. Bhowmick had denied conforming to the rules, which existed in the Indian society. She had among other things hired a chef, who according with the rules of caste was not allowed to cook for the caste family, which Bhowmick belonged to. After she had been bound to discharge him, she cooked for the whole week over the weekend, which was neither acceptable. "What should you otherwise with a refrigerator", she said grumpy. The relationship to Mr. Bhowmicks mother had been tense, the mother-in-law had even accused her of trying to poison her.

In USA, Mrs. Bhowmick feel considerably more comfortable; she did not enjoy playing bridge every Saturday with family Ghosal. There was not much in India she was longing for.

What is Eden?

The Eden Alternative has the potential of remaking the experience of aging and disability across the whole world.

It is a powerful tool for improving quality of life. To make this happen, we need, to teach others about what Eden is and how they can use it to transform the communities in which they work.

Cheap essay writing services offer help on Australia's Federation

We are dedicated to helping others create, enlivening environments and the elimination of the plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness, and Boredom. We are dedicated to helping people grow.

I believe that our facility is a homelike environment. Through Eden Alternative, we must teach ourselves to see the environments as habitats for human beings rather than facilities for the frail and elderly. We must learn what Mother nature has to teach us about the creation of vibrant, vigorous habitats like environment

Eden shows us the companion animals and the meaningful care to other living creatures, and the variety and spontaneity that mark an enlivened environment can succeed where pills and therapies fail.

Our goal is to help people weave together the philosophy of Eden with the real world of daily practice.

"Think of this as a Tree"

First we need to warm the soil.

"Eden Tree"

There are 10 principles and from the 10 principles think of ways to help warm the soil. Place these discussions on the tree.

ActivityPlanting the Seed (Vision)

# Principle 1 Acknowledging the Plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness, Boredom.

ExerciseImagine yourself as a nursing home staff member. Your Administrator has invited you to dinner away from the facility.

One person in the group should be chosen to play the role of the Administrator. He/She hosts the discussion by beginning with an Elder Story.

--

The seeds of Eden are planted in peoples hearts. It is with our hears, rather than our eyes, that we see what is essential in the world.

The Host begins by telling Elder stories about an Elder who has made a difference in his/her life. The stories should be drawn from personal lives rather than from work.

Every member in the group tells an Elder Story. At the end of the Elder stories, the host declares that the purpose of the Eden is to protect our Elders from the ravages of the plagues. The group is invited to reflect on the impact that Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom have on the Elders of our society. The question is then put to the group.

"Shall we commit ourselves to ending the Plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom?

There maybe an open discussion on this. After the discussion, each staff should receive a paper ballot. Printed on the ballot is the question and one check boxes for "Agree" and "Disagree". Place a ballot box on a nearby table and tell the staff to deposit their votes in the box provided.

At the end of session, open the box and count the ballots. If all the members agree then you are in consensus on the principle. Your hearts are all open to attempting this work and you can proceed.

"Warming the Soil"

We should always begin by warming the soil. It is like the organizations, they range from warm and life-giving to cold and sterile. Cold organizations feel cold and suppress the human spirit.

When pessimism, mistrust, deceit and stinginess dominate them. A bit like Prisons for e.g., these organizations contain and punish convicted criminals effectively and consistently but no-one would say they were warm. Organizations that care for the elderly should be different. They have a special challenge of achieving operational efficiency and loving warmth simultaneously. Warm organizations can function more effectively then cold organizations.

Activity

Question How can you give unexpectedly?

Choose someone today from your organization. Call on him/her and give honest praise. Or look to do a good deed anonymously. Plan your action, and if possible, carry it out while here during the session. Warm your organization.

Warm people cannot tolerate cold organizations. So, on the other hand, cold people favour cold organizations and those organizations tend to promote cold people into leadership positions.

Question So what about warm organizations you ask?

--

Warm organizations favour warm leaders. Many of us do good deeds that are unexpected, special and help others grow as human beings. We all want the light of the world to shine on our good works, and given ½ the chance, we will make sure that people know just how good we are. There are ways of minimising this.

1.Whenever possible, good deeds should be done anonymously.

. If the good deed cannot be done anonymously, it should be done person to person, not position to position.

If we ant to live in a caring world, we must be caring. If we want to find love in our daily lives, we must give love. I know that the climb out will be a long and hard one. We will make the climb together, or, not at all.

Helplessness and Boredom

"Tending the Garden"

At this stage we have accepted the task of combating the Plagues. So now, we are ready to reach out to the Elders, staff members and family members that make up our world.

It is important that people see that the leadership is active and involved in the process and not just palming it off.

First step is to identify and define the Plagues.

The definition of Loneliness is "the pain we feel when we want but cannot have companionship".

Discuss and talk about the definition of Loneliness.

Distinguish between solitude, which is finding pleasure in being alone, and loneliness which is always painful.

Question Does Loneliness stalk our Elders?

The definition of Helplessness is "the pain we feel when we always receive care and never give care".

Question Does Helplessness stalk our elders?

The definition of Boredom is "the pain we feel when our lives lack variety and spontaneity".

We need to be aware that entertainment is at best, a temporary fix for boredom.

BUT real relief comes from a life filled with variety and spontaneity. A boring life that is punctuated by entertainment still leaves people restless and dissatisfied.

Question Does boredom stalk our elders?

Heart Attack

Heart attack is a type of disorder of the heart. Disorders of the heart include Angina Pectoris, Heart Attack and Cardiac arrest. Angina Pectoris is the constriction of the chest and describes the pain that a person experiences when narrowed coronary arteries are unable to supply enough blood to the heart to meet demands.

A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the muscle is suddenly obstructed.

A cardiac arrest is any sudden stoppage of the heart.

Cheap essay writing services offer help on Heart Attack

This assignment will focus mainly on Heart Attack.

What is a heart attack?

A heart attack (A.K.A, myocardial infarction) is when part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies because it isn't receiving oxygen. Oxygen is carried to the heart by the arteries. Most heart attacks are caused by a blockage in the arteries. Usually, the blockage is caused by atherosclerosis, the buildup of fatty deposits in the artery. Heart attacks can also be caused by a blood clot that gets stuck in a narrow part of an artery to the heart. Clots are more likely to form where atherosclerosis has made an artery narrower. The fatty build up can break open and lead to the formation of a blood clot that seals the break. The cycle of fatty build up, plague rupture, and blood clot formation causes the artery to narrow, reducing blood flow. The process develops gradually over many years.

Causes/Risk Factors

A heart attack is caused by the obstruction of the blood supply to part of the heart muscle. This is brought about by the narrowing of the coronary artery, leading to the death of a piece of the heart muscle, which triggers the symptoms of a heart attack. The narrowing of the blood vessels supplying oxygen to the heart may be caused by

·High blood pressure

·Excessive intake of alcohol/Yaqona

·Obesity

·Lack of exercise

·Excessive smoking

·Improper diet

·Diabetes

·High cholesterol level

·A family history of heart attacks

·Atherosclerosis

·Male Sex

The above factors greatly increase the risk of one getting a heart attack.

Signs/Symptoms of Heart Attack

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, where no one doubts what

is happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often, people are not sure what is wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs and symptoms that can mean a heart attack is happening.

·Chest pain/discomfort

·Discomfort in other areas of the upper body (arm, neck, jaw or stomach)

·Shortness of breath

·Nausea

·Cold sweat

·Lightheadedness

·Feeling of indigestion

·Unexplained anxiety, weakness or fatigue

·Palpitations or paleness (Cyanosis)

·Vomiting

·Severe Case, pulse may be absent

Because symptoms can vary, it is important to be aware that not everyone expresses the classic severe chest pain to be a heart attack. Some victims may experience more than one symptom. When any of these symptoms persist longer than 0 minutes, one should assume that they are having a heart attack.

Treatment of Heart Attack

The aim of treating a heart attack is to minimize the work of the heart and to summon urgent medical help and arrange transport to hospital.

Ways of treating

·Make the casualty as comfortable as possible to ease the strain on the heart.

·A half sitting position with the casualty's head and shoulders well supported and the knees bent.

·Loosen clothing around neck, chest and waist.

·If casualty has medication for chest pain, advise them to take the recommended dosage. If pain persists and casualty is conscious, give the casualty a full dose (00mg) aspirin tablet to chew.

If person is unconscious or goes into unconsciousness

·Check and clear open the airway

·Check for breathing

·Check for circulation

·If necessary, continue Rescue Breathing or C.P.R

·If patient is unconscious with a detectable pulse present, place into recovery position.

·Monitor the pulse rate and breathing continuously at every 10-minute intervals.

Drugs used to treat a heart attack

·Aspirin-Helps lower the risk of a heart attack for those who already had one. It also keeps arteries open for those who had a previous heart bypass or artery opening procedure.

·Digitalis-slows fast heart rhythm and makes the heart contract harder when its pumping function has slowed down.

·ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor-helps the heart pump blood better. Stops the production of a chemical that makes blood vessels narrow.

·Beta Blocker-slows the heart and makes it beat with less contracting force.

·Nitrates (Nitroglycerine)-relaxes blood vessels and stops chest pain.

·Calcium Channel Blocker-relaxes blood vessels.

·Diuretic-Decreases fluids in the body.

·Blood Cholesterol-lowering agents-Decreases cholesterol levels in the blood.

·Thrombolytic agents-Also known as "clot busting drugs". It breaks up a blood clot in a coronary artery in order to restore blood flow. Given during a heart attack.

Prevention

The risk of having a heart attack can be reduced if you have had a previous heart attack or have not. The key is to control your heart disease risk factors. Six steps to reduce heart attack risk

·Stop smoking. (If you don't smoke, don't start!)

·Lower you high blood pressure. Get your blood pressure checked regularly.

·Reduce high cholesterol level. Cut back on foods high in saturated fats.

·Aim for a healthy weight.

·Be physically active each day.

·Mange diabetes. Control your blood sugar and undergo regular checks.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!

Conclusion

The heart is a specialized pump. It's muscle, the myocardium beats throughout our lives in a smooth continuous and coordinated way, controlled by an electrical impulse. The heart muscle had its own blood supply, provided by the coronary arteries. Like all other arteries, the coronary arteries are susceptible to narrowing and blockage, which can stop or even prevent the oxygen from reaching the heart muscle. The irony is that risk factors contributing to heart attacks can easily be eliminated by living healthy lives.

When listening to the radio, you may notice that during certain songs there will be a brief moment of silence in the middle of a verse; assuming that the station is not experiencing technical difficulties, this is because the song displayed some kind of obscene or objectionable material that is not appropriate for "public consumption." Considering that music is a form of expression, and all forms of expression are protected by the First Amendment, I decided to ask the "public" if they felt music ought to be censored when receiving radio play, and to justify their reasons.

The first victim was a 45-year-old father named Bob. Bob has a three-year-old daughter who is already a handful, so he claims, and feels that music ought to be censored when played on the radio because many times young children are listening to the music as well. Bob feels that music that displays distasteful language or promotes deviant behavior only contradicts what he is trying to teach his daughter about what is and what is not appropriate behavior. Like many parents, Bob wants to preserve his child's innocence for as long as possible, and if censoring music helps accomplish this goal, then he gives two thumbs up. This would seem to be a likely response from a parent, but as not to make any assumptions, the next person questioned is also a parent.

Crystal is a 6-year-old mother of two, with a third one on the way. In response to the question of whether or not music ought to be censored on the radio, Crystal felt that music should not suffer the restraints of censorship. Crystal claims that monitoring what your children are exposed to is the parents' responsibility, and that most children hear words or see things that may be objectionable, but cannot be prevented. Crystal continues by saying, "This world is full of things I would like to protect my children from, but the reality is, I cant be there to shield them from every little curse word or act of violence. Kids are going to have to learn to deal with things on their own, and if I teach them what I feel is right, then they will be better prepared to deal with life's hardships. But, if I attempt to guard them from all of life's nasty little quirks, then when they are exposed to these things, it will only be more shocking to them, and could affect them more negatively than if I had just explained to them from the start that this is something that they shouldn't do or say." Crystal was quick to respond, barely taking a minute to think of how she was going to word her answer. Throughout this conversation, Crystal kept a comical expression upon her face, her lips pursed, sometimes twisting into a tight little smile, her eyebrows raising every fifth word or so when making point, looking at me as though her answer was obvious. However, Crystal's ideas were a bit shocking, mainly because she is a parent. Then again, Crystal is a bit younger than Bob, which may be why she is not as conservative with her views. With the idea that younger people tend to be more freethinking, I move on to the next sample.

Jennifer is Filipino, 1 years old. Jennifer felt that music, when played on the radio, ought to be censored because the radio is an easily accessible open forum, which at times, there are songs that promote violence and vulgarity, and adults are not the only audience of radio stations, kids are too. Jennifer just shrugged and finished by saying, "Kids shouldn't hear that kind of stuff." Throughout this very short conversation, Jennifer kept averting her eyes, and shifting her weight, letting me know that I was wasting her time with a question that was a bit ridiculous, who would let there kids listen to songs that promoted "violence and vulgarity"? Once again, I surprised by the responses received; Jennifer was merely 1 years old but shared the same opinions of Mr. Bob Donohue. Maybe Jennifer's views had something to do with her upbringing, a long shot, but a possibility worth exploring.

The last person questioned was Kevin, a Japanese man reaching forty. Kevin felt that no form of art should be censored. "In comparison to societies where various forms of art are not subjected to the laws of censorship, you do not hear of people, specifically children, performing violent acts because they were influenced by some song or something they read that was violent in nature." Kevin then began to ask several questions concerning American inhibitions, and the conversation strayed off course.

In conclusion, this survey demonstrated one cannot judge how someone thinks simply based on age, ethnicity, and, in this case, whether or not they have children.

JACKIE ROBINSON

"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives," this is a very true statement that Jackie Robinson said. He played a big part by changing many other black's lives. He encouraged many blacks to follow in his footsteps, which was having the courage to break the color line in major league baseball and having a great athletic ability which still and will be revered by the game's followers.

His courage and persistence helped his get by the hard times to the better times. He also relied on his mother's strength, love, and attention. His keys to success were to not let all the racialism get to his head and make himself stop playing baseball, and he had the ability to stand up to injustice without compromising his personal integrity and beliefs. With those keys in mind, he never let verbal assaults get to him, from home and visitor games. He didn't stop playing because other teams were after him and spiked him, but life threats probably did scare him, but didn't let it get to his head. Once when he was to play in Cincinnati, he received a life threat that he shouldn't come otherwise they would kill him. The FBI investigated and nothing happened during the game. He continuously got hate mail and other threats like getting his baby kidnapped, but nothing actually happened. Many times fans yelled name at him, one time a game in Baltimore, Maryland many fans yelled racial slurs at him for nine straight innings. Many other incidents happened. At a game in Indiana he was pulled from a game because of a law prohibiting interracial athletes. During another game an opposing player threw a black cat onto the field and yelled at Robinson that the cat was his cousin. The worst behavior he ever heard from the crowd was when a torrent of mass hatred burst from the stands with every move he made and managed only one hit. During the time he was on the Royals, Jackie had suffered from nearly all white crowd in Louisville, but when the series went to Canada, that Canadians released a boo every time a Louisville player stepped up to bat. Jackie didn't approve this retaliation, but felt a great sense of gratitude. The Royals went on to winning the Championship because of the crowd's support. That was probably the only time Jackie was loved from the crowd.

This is probably the main reason Jackie Robinson is so famous, he was the first black to play in major league baseball and to be accepted, which encouraged other blacks to follow him. Branch Rickey should also be thanked, for letting Jackie be on the team and helping him get through the hard times. Branch Rickey, the Dodger's president, told Jackie, "This is baseball's great experiment." Mr. Rickey made Jackie promise not to fight back or talk back, but instead shrug if off. After Mr. Rickey proposal Jackie Robinson responded, "If you want to take this gamble, I will promise you there with be no incident," On April 15, 147 he hit for a first time in major league baseball and did a very poor job, so people started questioning Jackie's ability. After Jackie gained confidence, he started playing outstanding baseball. Many people, black and white, came to watch him play baseball, steal homes, and hit home runs. He got many people interested in baseball. The Dodgers won the National League pennent, and Jackie placed first in stolen bases, second in runs scored, and tied for first for home runs, 1. The newspapers, which doubted Jackie in the beginning, now said that "baseball's great experiment" had been a great success. He did such an outstanding job, so the paper named him Rookie of the Year. Branch Rickey admired him because he kept all the tension in for two years. "Robinson had performed his pioneering role with courage and dignity." Now Rickey told Jackie that he was on his own and could speak his mind. After Jackie spoke about his social and political beliefs to a nationwide audience. "I can't speak for 15 million people any more than any other person can, but I know that I've got too much invested for my wife and child and myself in the future in this country, and I and other Americans of many races and faiths have too much invested in our countries' welfare, for any of us to throw away….. But that doesn't mean we're going to stop fighting race discrimination in this country until we've got it licked. It means we're going to fight it all the harder because our stake in the future is so big." Afterwards he became praised for his affirmation of American ideals and because of that he became a more popular player.

In 14 Robinson showed his very best by finishing the season with a .4 hitting average, which was the highest in the league. He led the league in stolen bases, 7, and placed very high with many other records. He was nearly perfect defensively, like a vacuum cleaner sucking up ground balls at second base. His story became so famous that they made his life into a movie and make a Jackie Robinson watch. Now in major league baseball he has been accepted by most, but not all. This is around the time he received a life threat, which was the 150 season. During that year he finished with a .8 average for baseball, the best in National League. Whenever he was interviewed, he always told the truth and said very meaningful things, and he was and still is know as one of the most outspoken athletes of his generation. Many blacks followed after him, but still racism held many back. During the 15 season he continued to be a star batter with a . average and scored 10 runs. After he continued to play many more fantastic games, but his body was beginning to slow down. In January of 157 he retired from baseball. Jackie got into politics and in 16 he became eligible for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame which is the highest honor a baseball player can receive, he received it because he make a significant contribution to the game. He made his last pubic appearance at the ceremony at the Dodger Stadium to commemorate the 5th anniversary of his first major league season, his body was deteriorating, but he still walked across the field for the last time to watch his number retire, 4, on October 4, 17. He left behind a legacy of great accomplishments, his amazing athletic ability and he was the pioneer for blacks to play major league baseball and he did it by having the courage to face the prejudice.

PHOENIX, May , 1. - Through an agreement with PNC Bank, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) recently installed Touch Technology Internationals (TTI) CardTouch system to support a smart card program for employees at its main administration facility in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Employees are using the card to access the toll road, gain entrance to the building and to make purchases in the cafeteria and at vending machines. The system uses a Gemplus hybrid card, which incorporates both contact and contactless chip technology. The program went live on March 5, 1. The use of the smart card in our administration building is very exciting, said Deborah Jubelirer, assistant director of marketing and a project manager for PTCs Electronic Toll Collection. We will have the ability to integrate features of the technology and at the same time introduce Turnpike employees to smart card technology by allowing them to experience its uses and conveniences first hand.

Commenting on future plans, Jubelirer added, Our ultimate goal is to have the card available to our customers to pay for tolls and other purchases on the Turnpike. Beyond any doubt, the smart card has tremendous value and potential in making our lives and jobs easier and less complicated.

TTI is very proud to be a part of the Pennsylvania Turnpikes smart card initiative, said Bill Hussey, TTI president and CEO. The Commission has a rich tradition of innovation and first class customer service.

Don Gleason, TTI executive vice president, provided further perspective on the significance of the program, With this implementation, CardTouch brings financial, access control and toll applications together on a single card. And this technology offers unlimited potential for convenience in the areas of tolls, parking and transit ó issues that affect virtually all of our customers.

Gemplus Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Michael Crosno is also optimistic on the prospects for contactless smart card technology in transit and toll applications. Gemplus is excited to see this technology deployed in a live practical application with such a strong business case for future growth. We applaud the cooperative efforts of PNC, the Turnpike Commission and TTI.

TTI used the contactless features of the card to enable a touch-and-go transaction to gain access via the toll road. Access to the building is controlled in similar fashion with the same card adapted to the existing security system. Once inside the building, employees can load value to the card using a kiosk that provides access to personal bank accounts. The cards can then be used to make purchases in the cafeteria and at vending machines throughout the complex. To facilitate acceptance, TTI integrated a smart card terminal with the electronic cash register used by the cafeteria operator.

Earlier this year, the Merrill Lynch Forum spoke with Dr. Francis Fukuyama about globalization. The conversation focused on how culture shapes, and is shaped by, the increasing worldwide economic integration. In his comments, Fukuyama challenges the view that globalization is leading to cultural homogeneity, arguing that societies largely maintain their individual characteristic despite economic pressures. In fact, Fukuyama asserts that these cultural values in many respects define how business is conducted within a nation.

This does not mean that society is not influenced or altered by the process of globalization -- Fukuyama does believe there is a convergence of political and economic ideologies. Rather, he suggests that there are deeper elements of culture not easily abandoned.

Q) To what extent has globalization been realized?

I think that in many respects, globalization is still superficial. Although there is a great deal of talk about it currently, the underlying truth is that the global economy is still limited. It seems to me that the real layer of globalization is restricted to the capital markets. In most other areas, institutions remain intensely local.

Professional writers help on to be or not to be essays

Trade, for example, is still predominantly regional. Relatively little trade flows beyond local regions Asians trade mostly with Asians and Latin Americans trade mostly with Latin Americans. Even in more developed regions this practice holds true. Intra-European trade accounts for roughly 60% of all European trade.

This regional limitation is true elsewhere. Most companies are predominantly national, and certainly governments remain very national. Consumer markets are not only national, but they are segmenting even further within regions as consumer education improves and consumers are able to demand products that precisely meet their needs.

Q) Are there aspects of globalization that lead to greater homogenization?

I think that homogenization and an affirmation of distinctive cultural identities will occur simultaneously. In terms of large economic and political institutions, cultures are becoming more homogeneous. There arent as many alternatives and regime types. It isnt possible to have a kind of Peronista economic nationalism, or a certain kind of socialism. It turns out that, given the nature of the global economy, there are only so many ways that a political or economic system can be organized to make it viable and competitive. To be an advanced society, a country has to be a democracy, and it has to be connected to the global marketplace. In that respect, there is a greater homogenization of institutions and ideologies. On a cultural level, its not clear that homogenization is proceeding nearly as rapidly. To a certain extent, there is a real resistance to cultural homogenization.

Q) Do you believe that homogenization will ever occur on a deeper level?

It could be that culture will ultimately become homogenized, just like political institutions, but I believe that its going to be a much slower process. Many people think that because we have advanced communications technology, and are able to project global television culture worldwide, this will lead to homogenization on a deeper cultural level. I think that, in a way, its done just the opposite.

For example, there is probably less mutual liking, more distrust and greater emphasis on the difference between the cultures of the United States and Asia today than there was 40 years ago. In the 150s and 60s, Asia looked up to the United States as a model of modernization. Now, Asians look at American urban decay and the decline of the family and they feel that America is not a very attractive model. Communications technology has allowed both Asians and Americans to see each other more clearly, and it turns out they have very different value systems.

Q) Can global corporations have a homogenizing effect on culture?

I think that there is a global consumer culture that is spread by companies like McDonalds and Coca-Cola. However, if you look beneath the surface and ask people in different countries where their loyalties lie, how they regard their families, and how they regard authority, there will be enormous differences. When people examine a culture, they pay too much attention to aspects like the kinds of consumer goods that people buy. Thats the most superficial aspect of culture. A culture really consists of deeper moral norms that affect how people link together.

In my second book, Trust The Social Virtues and the Creation of Prosperity, one of the central theses argues that these deeper qualities, the so-called moral norms, define economic activity. For instance, Chinese culture is family-centric limiting business transactions to extended family. This fact has many consequences. It means that Chinese businesses tend not to be very large, probably because they are unwilling to bring in managers from outside the family. It means that its very difficult to establish brand names because large marketing organizations are not used. It also means it is very difficult to build lasting institutions that endure for more than two or three generations. In the China example it is culture that drives economics.

Q) What constitutes these deeper cultural Identities?

Obviously language, religion, and race are all important components of a local identity. My particular interest is in what I call networks of trust. These networks vary in different parts of the world. I think that to really understand how to operate in any region of the world, you really need to understand the networks of trust in that area. Once a trust relationship is established, a business relationship can follow.

For example, in many Latin American countries, many of the largest companies are almost always controlled by a group of families. This is also true in other countries, such as China and Turkey. Obviously, business opportunities in such countries very much depend on an understanding of the way that these social networks are wired together. The only people with a full understanding of how these networks work are the locals themselves. Thats why outsiders sometimes find it difficult to conduct business in countries where the expected degree of transparency and ability to form business relations without preexisting social relationships are lacking.
