The most important decision when a team is assembled is what the goal of the team will be. It is imperative that the teams' goals are well defined (Tools for Teams pg ). Depending on the type of team sometimes the goal is given to them and sometimes the team chooses it themselves. In the case of a Self-Directing or Self-Governing the team chooses their own goal (Tools for Teams pg 17). This can be a time consuming process. If the team chooses a problem that is too broad in scope it can make it difficult for the team to handle, resulting in frustration and possible conflict (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Later on in the process there is the possibility for the team to under or over analyze the problem. In the case of under analyzing the problem the team may jump to conclusions (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/). This maybe caused by a team that is being directed to resolve the problem quickly or if the team feels rushed. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that it usually is not detected until well after analyzing the problem, when the team is determining possible solutions. Over analyzing the problem can lead to paralysis and team frustration by endless data collection and debating. If the team lingers to long analyzing the problem it usually gets personal and when it does conflict will follow.

Member participation is also an important factor to reduce the potential for conflict. When making team decisions it may not be necessary that all members be present. However, if their expertise is required, or if they will be affected by the decision then they should be present. Leaving a team member out of an important discussion will build resentment (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

In some cases a team may spend a significant amount of time and energy on analyzing and identifying the problem that they just run out of steam. The team should have developed some guidelines to be used to develop the solution. During the discussion of a proposed solution and how to implement the solution members may feel that they have nothing left to give and simply choose to ignore or have lost focus on the guidelines. Member participation will drop or short cuts will be taken. By not keeping the guidelines or crteria in mind when discussing the proposed solution, and how to implement it the team will negate all the prior work they have done (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Conflict can be productive

A team without conflict, in the end, may not have determined the best solution to the problem. The real problem occurs when the conflict gets personal, or when the team fails to manage the conflict. Conflict is just another obstacle, and by overcoming this obstacle the team grows stronger through teamwork, interpersonal skills, trust and innovation (Tools for Teams pg ). Also, the sense of accomplishment by overcoming such a large obstacle is a learning experience, brings the members closer, and can increase a team's morale (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Noninvasive Brain Imaging Techniques

To document brain structure

CT scans (Computerized Tomography)

Also called CAT scans (computerized axial tomography)

MRI scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

fMRI scans (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

See below after discussion of the PET scan.

CT scans (Computerized tomography)

Synonymous with "CAT" scan (Computer-Axial Tomography)

Tomography = picture

several X-rays are taken of a thin slice of the brain from different vantage points while person is inside a large cylinder.

A Two-dimensional, often black and white photograph of a horizontal brain "slice" is produced by the computer

"For a full brain scan 180 separate scans are made." (Reber & Reber, 001, p. 1).

Least expensive of the brain imaging techniques.

MRI scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Exploits the magnetic principle of molecules, specifically of the hydrogen atom.

A computer combines information about magnetic fields and radio waves to generate a picture of the brain.

several X-rays are taken of the brain from different vantage points while person is inside a large cylinder

The MRI scan produces high-resolution, -dimensional, colored-pictures of the brain.

Most expensive of the brain imaging techniques

Noninvasive Brain Imaging Techniques

To document brain activity

PET scans

fMRI scans (Functional MRIs)

PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography)

A water-based solution of radioactive oxygen is injected into a vein where it is then carried throughout the blood vessels and brain.

The radioactive oxygen breaks into positrons

very small particles

The positrons degrade

While degrading, gamma rays are emitted.

PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography)

The gamma rays occur with different densities for each area of the brain.

The density of gamma rays in each area is translated by the computer and depicted as separate colors

red=most dense, yellow, quite dense, green=moderately dense, blue, least dense.

Blood vessels enlarge in the area(s) of the brain that are active, hence gamma rays are quite dense when coming from active brain regions.

Can easily view which parts of the brain becomes active during (are involved in) particular behaviors

PET Scans of Brains

Normal v. Schizophrenic

Functional MRI

This method functions in a manner similar to the MRI.

fMRI uses the magnetic properties of hemoglobin to generate its real-time activities of the brain

"When the oxygen is absorbed [by firing neurons] the hemoglobin no longer carries the oxygen, so we can refer to blood as being oxygenated or deoxygenated. Oxygenated blood has magnetic properties, but deoxygenated blood does not. fMRI techniques calculate a ratio of oxygenated to deoxygenated blood in the local area." (Willingham, 001, p. 44).

Animal Testing

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Animal Testing. This issue of animal testing is extremely controversial. This matter can cause many ethical and moral concerns. Good points can be shown from those that oppose animal testing and those for it. I don't believe the issue is either black or white.

It is estimated that about 40 million rats and mice are used in experiments each year. This isn't including other species involved in several different researches. The numbers are quite high and could be decreased if only the crucial tests were performed. The essential studies are those that examine medical advances and certain psychological advances.

It's not acceptable to do several unnecessary tests. Tests for cosmetics could be avoided. Also, testing the effects of a chemical on a species is pointless if you already know that the chemical is harmful. Outcomes of a test are going to be different for a dog or ape as opposed to a human.

To avoid such staggering numbers of animal subjects, experimenters could use alternatives for the study. For example, researchers can now grow a thin layer of cells on a membrane and monitor changes in electrical resistance in the cells as they are exposed to test chemicals. There have also been some companies that have developed artificial "human skin" which can be used in skin grafts for burn victims and other patients and can replace animals in product tests. Another alternative is by using computers, scientists can build an accurate model of a human heart that will allow researchers to test new treatments electronically before they are attempted on humans. Computerized "virtual organs" predict how drugs will be absorbed. Drug companies can then test the effects of substances electronically before trying them on a human.

However, these alternatives won't always work. Animal testing is acceptable on rats and other small creatures when it is absolutely necessary. Testing this way can be very helpful and has improved the knowledge on many scientific and medical questions. Animal research should be limited to the species of small animals only. The use of larger animals such as dogs, apes, and pigs should be eradicated. These more domesticated animals have become pets and it is harder to see them go through such suffering.

Some activists create many arguments about the principles behind killing so many animals. However, there are an estimated 15 million dogs and cats put to death in pounds and shelters each year. These cats and dogs are put to their death for the simple reason that the pounds and shelters are overcrowded. So maybe there should be an equal amount of conflict protesting pounds.

No matter how awful animal testing seems, in the long run it has benefited many people through medicine and data. Every opportunity to engage in further advancements should be used for the betterment of the human population. It seems unethical to put animals through such pain and torture, but if the testing stopped completely there would be a large amount of human lives lost. Additionally, it's better to have animals tested than humans. The health, safety, and importance of the human population outweigh the health, safety, and importance of the rat population.

Fortunately There Will Always Be Fairies

At this moment, it is 1 am and I am about to tell you the story of my life. And I do not know where or how to begin. What I do know is, when it all started, I also know what it is like to have my life, for the simple reason that it is mine and that I spend day and night living it. What I do not know is where it is going. But that is one thing that we all have in common I assume.

I also assume that though you have already read the first paragraph of my so called biography you couldn't even tell my gender so I think that it would only be fair to begin introducing myself properly. My parents named me Emilia Anna, I was named after grandmothers, the first name in honor of my father's and second to not offend my mother's parents.

I am at this moment precisely 1 years, 4 months, a week and a day old. A teenager one might say. Neither child nor adult, but in that awkward in between stage that everybody calls the best years of their life. My eyes are brown but I always wished they were blue, I have a gap between my two front teeth and freckles on my nose.

It is now 18 am and I have just described my facial features, so I guess we're making an- I admit slow but evident progress.

I believed in fairies until I reached the age of 5. I was persuaded they lived in my mom's tulips and would always keep an eye on the pink and yellow flowers to catch a glimpse of one.

It never happened.

At the age of four, a day before leaving my home, which is Switzerland, to live in the United States, I got engaged to my five year old neighbor in the red sandbox behind my house.

Needless to say that this long distance relationship did not last.

But I kept busy. During my third week of school, I lost my first tooth having lunch at my new cafeteria while biting into a cheese sandwich. While I very much enjoyed the fact that the entire dining hall was on all fours trying to find it, tears still stung my eyes when it wasn't found. So I never got to see the tooth-fairy either.

Despite all these disappointments at early age, I enjoyed my childhood thoroughly, being loved by wonderful parents and two little brothers and spending most of time drawing and painting outside (while consequently keeping my eye open for any sign of a fairy) and selling my masterworks off to the friendly and patient neighbors.

My Papa would put my pajama pants on his head to make me laugh and read me Gebrueder Grimm Maerchen before tucking me in. He would record the stories and then, when he was on business trips my mom and I would listen to them. I still do sometimes.

I am scared of growing up, of being responsible of myself and failing. Of not seeing my family everyday and missing out on how my brothers grow up. Of not being able to begin a sentence with "I am scared of growing up". I am also afraid of sharks and the idea of eating at Commons for the following 4 years.

I believe in love, in passion and adventure. I believe that traveling is education and that bagels taste better when toasted. I believe that there is good in humans, even though I ever so often have my doubts. I do not believe in regrets or learning the value of the square root of x . But I still like to believe in fairies.

Type of Services Offered

The famous "Twelve Steps" of AA express the philosophy and recovery process of this international association. Offering hope of recovery from alcoholism is an essential feature of Alcoholics Anonymous. Such hope is provided by example and supportive interrelationships with other members of this self-help fellowship.

Each person is expected to become involved with the Twelve Steps of AA, an ongoing process that "twelve-steppers" refer to as "working the Program…" The word "alcohol" appears only in the first step. This one reference underscores AA's belief that the main work in recovery is a restructuring of the alcoholic's life.

The Twelve Traditions of AA are the operational principles of the fellowship and express the importance and significance of the group in relationship to its members, nonmembers, and society in general.

Online essay help on AA Meeting

Group Size

This group looks pretty big. There were about 50 people.

Agency Purpose

Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the most successful approaches in recovery from alcoholism. AA is a fellowship of problem drinkers who want help in maintaining sobriety. The agency's purpose is to help alcoholics to quit drinking. When they gather together, they help each other to quit drinking. They share their experiences with each other and they learn through their experiences. When they hear different stories on how bad alcohol can make you look, then they understand that there is no purpose for using alcohol. What the agency does is that they let everybody gather together and share their own experiences.

Source of Clients

Source of clients can be from court orders, doctor referrals, counseling or just being tired of self abuse.

Cost of Clients

This program is completely free and available to everybody.

How is Program Funded?

It's a self-supported organization which works through donations.

Program Methodology

This program is developed on these twelve steps

1.We admitted we were powerless over alcohol-that our lives had become unmanageable.

.Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

.Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we Understood Him.

4.Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5.Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6.Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7.Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8.Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

.Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10.Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11.Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

1.Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Program Success

There were about 50 folks who succeeded in this program. They were sharing their happy moments on how this program helped them out.

Other Information

Founded in 15 by two alcoholics who were unable to achieve an alcohol-free lifestyle individually, AA began when these two joined together to stay sober through mutual support. Voluntary membership involves an emotional commitment that the alcoholic is powerless over the control of alcohol and that only "a power greater than the self" AA's concept of God as we understand him-can restore soundness of mind.

I think it's a great program that helps people to quit drinking. I am glad that the AA meeting is available for everyone and it's available for free.
