On January 8, 00 he was stopped and apprehended buy two INS in Washington D.C. were he had been invited by US State department in order to speak about US-Pakistan relationships. Hieder was taken to a detention center interrogated and only finally let free when high ranking officials from the State Department intervened (Foreign Affairs, May/Jun00, Vol. 8 Issue , p8). But how far will be to far. What about the liberties of those most affected by just laws and the Patriot Act? The country may be comfortable right now with the way thing are being run since the general population are not terrorist or Muslims for that matter and there for do not have to worry about the new and extended powers of the government. And who is to decide when the terrorist threat is neutralized and laws such as the Patriot Act are no longer needed? What will happen then? I fear that only after drastic deprivations of civil liberties will the American people truly start to feel the pain from such laws like the USA Patriot Act.
