Winning a championship is a great feeling for any athlete and team in any sport. The Islands YMCA gymnastics team from Wilmington Island won the 00 National Team Developmental Championship at the Niagara Falls Convention Center in New York last year. This year they will be defending their title in Savannah.
Defending a championship title in any sport is an honor and a privilege. Defending a title in one's hometown is electrifying and gives one an advantage. The "Islands Girls" YMCA gymnastics team has the honor this year to defend its national YMCA title right here in Savannah. The event will take place at the Savannah Civic Center from July July 7. Co-Meet Coordinator and coach of the "Islands Girls", Carol Henry, said, "It is an extreme honor for our association and its gymnastics booster club to hold a prestigious event like this. This is the third time we've hosted this event and it's the largest in 8 years. There will be over 1,00 gymnasts coming to the meet. They represent approximately 110 YMCA's from around the United States."
When you go into their practice facility in the brand new YMCA on Wilmington Island, there are hundreds of trophies lining the walls. Over the past few years, the "Islands Girls" have won numerous awards and titles. In 000, the team placed third in the overall competition, and in 001 they came in at a close second place. Then, finally, last year the "Islands Girls" brought home the national title. So far this year their United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) level eight team was first in the 00 Valentine Invitational meet in Tucker, Georgia. Their level five and Novice team finished first in the 00 YMCA Georgia state meet.
"Hopefully this year's success will help us repeat as national champions," stated Henry. "We're so proud of our team. We always try to instill two main thoughts in the girls to be successful. I feel these thoughts give the girls pride and determination. The first thought is, 'Attitude is everything' and 'God gave you talent-you need to use it'."
To understand a gymnastic meet, you have to know the four different events the gymnasts will compete in the floor exercise, the vault, the balance beam, and the uneven bars. The winner with the most points form each category is declared the winner of that individual event. Whoever accumulates the most points in all categories combined is the overall individual winner. The team with the most high point place finishers then earns the team title.
The gymnasts also compete at different ability levels. The competition breaks down into five levels of competition at the national meet. Level five and six are the compulsory divisions. They compete and follow the USAG routines and rules. Novice division is the beginner optional division and follows the USAG level seven rules (Level five, six, and novice only compete for individual awards. There is not a team competition at this level).
The developmental level is an intermediate optional division and they follow the USAG level eight rules. They will receive individual event awards after each session, but the top twenty girls from junior and senior age group will qualify to compete for the top ten all around places. There are 70 girls entered into this division, and the top ten teams will win an award.
The championship level is the highest level of competition. There are 147 athletes in this top division. They follow USAG level nine and ten rules. The girls will compete on the first day, and only the top 80 will qualify for the semi finals on the second day of competition. After the second day of competition, the individual all around places will be decided after the points from the two days are added together. The top ten all around athletes for junior and senior age group will be announced as the "00 YMCA Women's All American Team Members" (The Islands YMCA team has had five girls make it to this team in past meets). The top ten championship teams will be awarded for this division.
The Islands YMCA Gymnastics is coached at each level. Karie Wise and Martha Garcia coach the level three and four gymnasts, Beth Rathburn coaches the level five/novice gymnasts, Natalie Stein coaches level five and six gymnasts, Carol Henry coaches level seven, eight, and nine gymnasts, and Romy Mumalova is the Head Competitive Coach.
Gymnastics is an expensive sport due to the amount of traveling that the girls do throughout the year. "Many of our recreational and teen girls receive financial aid through our scholarship program offered by the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. If it weren't for this benefit, they would not be able to have such great opportunities. Even some of our girls on the national team received aid," said Coach Carol Henry.
Even though gymnastics is not a sanctioned sport in Georgia high schools, many of the "Islands Girls" gymnastics female athletes have had offers to join college gymnastics teams. Some of the colleges who've shown interest are located in Texas, California, Colorado, and Kentucky. Right now only a few girls represent college teams. Two gymnasts who graduated in 1 went on to participate on college teams. Amy Sue Fescharek joined the Wolfpack of North Carolina State and Fateema Turay joined the Bulldogs of Yale University gymnastics teams. Fateema was the captain of Yale's gymnastic team this year.
The 00 YMCA women's national gymnastics championship is here in Savannah. Once again the dates are scheduled from July - July 7, 00. "Contracts with the city where made a year in a half ago. There are 8 volunteer chairmen that have put in numerous hours in since January of this year to coordinate this event. It will take approximately 400 volunteers during the week of July nd to July 7th to make this a success."
