Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, â€The Yellow Wallpaper”, is written from a feminist point of view. The story is centered around the protagonist, a woman who suffers from a mental depression following the birth of her baby. But John would not hear of it.” (Gilman, p.47) The treatment prescribed to his wife is from the beliefs of Weir Mitchell. The rest cure - used to calm one down. John’s wife is to remain in a completely relaxed state, refraining from any outside stimulus, perhaps ultimately resulting in an opposite effect. She is so alone, craving interaction with others, that she seeks out companionship from an illusion of a woman in the wallpaper in her room. She even becomes protective of this woman when she catches John and his sister looking at the wallpaper. Afraid that John and Jennie might take away her only friend, she convinces herself that no one will discover this woman, â€but I know she was studying that pattern, and I am determined that nobody shall find it out but myself!” (Gilman, p.54) She feels akin to this woman, who is also trapped, just like herself. Perhaps this illusion is her parallel.

To better understand the imprisonment the protagonist feels, Gilman makes effective descriptions about the setting. â€A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house”, (Gilman, p.446) leaves feelings of loneliness and desolation. To ensure complete isolation of his wife, John keeps her prisoner in a place that is three miles away from town. She is also kept upstairs. All of her days are spent alone in a stark, barren room. Along with â€the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs”, (Gilman, p.48) John nails his wife’s bed to the floor. This does not seem like the appropriate atmosphere one should endure to overcome severe depression. Family members are even forbidden to visit. What else, other than family, would seem better suited to lift one’s spirits? And finally, she is forbidden to write, the one thing left to keep her well-grounded and at peace with herself. To overcome depression, one would think that the opposite of isolation would make promise of a start to recovery - friends, family, outside stimuli, and positive influences would make one want to get better. These descriptions about setting help emphasize the isolation that John’s wife experiences.

The aspect of the story that is most intriguing is the conflict between the two main characters. Despite the fact that they are married, John is the result of the isolation that his wife undergoes. Due to the era of the story, John is a dominating male, one who is labeled with power and superiority. He is a physician with the knowledge and stature of high-class. He is a man that is above and beyond the general public, and most definitely his wife. His wife is only a poor, misguided woman, incapable of making decisions and expressing her own feelings. She is a mindless human being. But is she really? John’s wife bows down to his wishes and is perceived as not having acceptable ideas of her own recovery. But are her ideas really unacceptable? The supposed different level of character creates a sense of isolation and segregation. Had John been on the same level as his wife, he might have been more sympathetic to her and made the proper adjustments better suited to a quick and promising recovery. However, having created an isolated environment for her to live in, only increased the level of isolation for his wife and made their relationship even more distant.

Ultimately, it is the isolation brought upon by John, that brings about his wife’s downfall. We, the readers, know that she was not a mindless human being. With proper care and attention, she may have recovered from her depression, which, however, eventually lead to insanity. Being shut out from society, locked up, and refused to express feelings and ideas would make almost anyone go crazy.

Why are some organizations adopting a technological innovation that is announced to yield both operational and strategic benefits while others hesitate, or decide not to adopt for the time being? This question is highly relevant especially in the case of interorganizational information systems (IOS) exemplified by EDI (electronic data interchange), due to the earnest attention this particular technology had received throughout the 10s from academia, practitioners, and governments all over the world. Surprisingly few Danish organizations have adopted EDI. If their technical capabilities and their high degree of computerization are considered then the organizations reluctance to adopt EDI appears to be even more irrational and incomprehensible. The phenomenon of organizations lagging behind adoption of IT regardless of their opportunities to do so is well known. What is missing so far are factors explaining the reason for this situation.

Throughout the history of IS research a number of explanatory factors have been found to be prevalent in relation to adoption and diffusion of IT in and among organizations. A summary of an extensive review of the literature on IOS and EDI and adoption and diffusion of IOS and EDI has resulted in a number of possible explanatory factors and models for adoption. One of these models comprises factors related to the organizational context, the environmental context, and the technological context. These three contexts or dimensions are the pivotal point for this study on adoption and diffusion of IOS in a Danish setting. Inherent in the three contexts is for example the influence on organizations from environmental factors such as action plans promoted by governmental institutions or by industry and trade associations and competitive market forces. From an internal point of view, the motivators for adoption of innovations in organizations focus on the operational benefits and human resources. Finally, the influence from innovation attributes related to the technology aspects is comprised in the third context.

This study is a longitudinal evaluation of the outcome of the Danish national 16-action plan for e-commerce. The reported data originate from more than half a decade starting with the political 15-statements, which gave a high priority to the use of information technology in businesses and administration. The 15-statement stressed the need for formulating an action plan for EDI and e-commerce. The next step was the launch of the 16-action plan for EDI and e-commerce. This action plan was operationalized in the TDP (TradeDocument Project) by the two major Danish business associations. The TDP which aimed at supporting the adoption and diffusion of EDI included nine companies, manufactures and wholesalers, in the Danish steel and machinery industry. As a part of this analysis of the impact of co-ordinated adoption and diffusion projects the outcome of TDP was evaluated during the autumn of 1. Based on the knowledge gained from the TDP, from previous research on IS adoption, and from EDI research in the 10s a survey instrument was developed to evaluate the status of the use of EDI (and e-commerce) in a business sector, which had been exposed to the 16-action plan and the TDP.

This study, which was practice driven in nature, started as an exploratory search for motivators for EDI adoption. The exploratory approach led to changes in focus of the fieldwork throughout the study. The first step, examination of the TDP, revealed that a number of factors had influenced adoption and non-adoption amongst the participating companies. The industry and trade associations, which initiated the project, expected that the TDP provided the optimal conditions for adoption and diffusion of EDI in the Danish steel and machinery industry and especially amongst the companies involved in the project. Although he is human and made up of human parts, he is still considered a monster because he wasn't born of a woman. The situation Victor is in is also very unreal especially in that time of age. Even now with technology, it is impossible to create a human being from pieces of others.

One of the most unreal situations is when Victor goes to the morgues and slaughter houses. An everyday person would not be allowed to collect human parts of the dead. In this quote victor is preparing for the creation of his monster. He is talking about going to view the dead.

"To examine the causes of life, we must first recourse to death. I became acquainted with the science of anatomy, but this was not sufficient; I must also observe the natural decay and corruption of the human body."

This would not be allowed in 'real life', making this an unreal element.

The Return of Martin Guerre is the marvelous and true tale of mistaken identity within the sixteenth century. It provides an intellectually provocative account of Martin Guerre from the village of Artigat, who left his wife and son as a young man only to return years later as a very different man. This changed man identifies himself as Martin Guerre and manages to convince everyone that he has returned. With very few blunders, he integrates himself back into the family he deserted and stole from years before. It seems that everyone including his wife, Bertrande, is willing to accept Martin back with open arms. No one questions his identity and all recognize him, welcoming back to the village he was born in. After several years of social likeability and marital bliss with two children, a vagabond recognizes Martin as Arnaud, nicknamed Pansetta, an old comrade from the war of the village of Tilh, which he denies. But the occurrence spreads gossip like wildfire among the village and there is talk. To make matters worse, not long after, Martin asks his uncle for his share of the farm?s profits and this is where trouble begins.

When Martin left, his uncle, Pierre cleverly married Bertrande?s widowed mother, thus consolidating his holdings. Pierre is furious at Martin?s presumption and attacks, accusing him of imposture, impersonating his nephew in order to steal from his family. The trial is held to determine once and for all whether or not Martin is who he claims. The first trial at Rieux found Arnaud guilty of imposture. To which he appeals and a second trial is held in Toulouse. The case is described as fascinating and frustrating for both Guerre?s relatives and the villagers who are equally divided between those who thought Arnaud an impostor, and those who believed he really was Martin. What balanced against Arnaud in the end was the shocking return of the real Martin Guerre. To which Davis carefully notes, the reason for his sudden reappearance in Artigat is not in the historical record.

Natalie Davis, author and a historian of early modern France, does an excellent job of painting the life and times of a sixteenth century peasant farming community in the south of France. Gathered from many sources, Davis relies on two main accounts Historia by Guillaume Le Seuer and Arrest Memorable by Jean de Coras. Both were written within a year of Arnaud du Tilh?s execution. She traces the tale of Martin Guerre extensively, providing related details from the time to the families involved. What makes this story unique and all the more intriguing that it was in fact the subject of historical treatise, very rare for ordinary peasant farmers. The book is woven with a pleasing combination of social and historical facts that are not only informative but also interesting. Learning about marriage and family customs of the day, the role of women and the management of property and money, we enter into the life of Martin Guerre-Arnaude du Tilh an opportunity rare of many historical accounts. Armed with religious, historical and social data, Davis proposes realistic reasons as to why each may have acted in the way that they did. An example of this is where Davis describes Martin?s first return from prison ?Bertrande received him with tenderness, washing his feet and taking him into her bed. Very early in the morning, Pierre and his sons-in-law, all armed, seized him in Bertrande?s name and had him bundled off to prison in Rieux.? She makes it effortless to understand and relate to each character?s strength and weakness, desire and ambition. This is also true of the film Le Retour de Martin Guerre, which captured so well the essence of the story. This is not to say however, that the film is in any way as historically accurate or informative as Davis? book. Particularly, in reference to the rich Basque background which is completely ignored as well as many issues pertaining to rural Protestantism that are sacrificed. The film just barely dares to touch on religion with no verbal references and few visual props, these mainly devoted to Bertrande and her chastity. Nor are we told of the origination of Guerre in the film that, in actuality was altered from Daguerre to be accepted by the village. Davis? book contains much more historical information and sociological analysis than the film would ever dare to portray, presenting a well-researched picture of the events. Her writing is easily accessible and flows extremely well from the first person perspective.

Le Retour de Martin Guerre (the French film made in 181 that inspired Natalie Davis to write her book) despite the above criticisms, has proved a successful historical romance by Motion picture standards. The film is artistically and visually pleasing, mainly due to the authenticity that Davis brings to the table, having consulted on the authenticity of the set. The film begins and we are led through the daily routine of a sixteenth century French peasant household, from reaping grain, washing clothes to meal preparation and child rearing. The cast is extremely realistic, faces and clothes are soiled and sweaty, even the hair is stringy and hands grimy. Everyone looks as though they are in dire need of a bath! Although the scene we are brought into is convincing, one is not fully involved in the ongoings until the middle to latter half of the film. This is mainly due to the necessity of laying a sixteenth century foundation for sake of believability but as I mentioned earlier, there is little reference to the family?s origins and deep Basque tradition which could have made the beginning of the film more engaging. However, one must be forgiving when it comes to movies, due to the fact that the average moviegoer is more interested in the actors and the love story than the underlying history, which is disappointing but true. As for the actors, Gerard Depardieu is superb, he gives a compelling performance as the ?fake? Martin Guerre. Depardieu manages to be sincere while at the same time underlying deviance, charming everyone including his wife with that big, hearty smile of his. His wife, played by Nathalie Baye is equally as enjoyable, bringing the perfect mixture of innocence and beauty necessary to Bertrande. Baye balances her situation of knowledge and power well and one is never quite sure if she, indeed, is fully aware of the switch. In her face, we easily identify with her, torn by love, guilt and doubt. Overall, the confusion is portrayed extremely well and the other actors play off of Depardieu and Baye with skill that just seems understood. Everyone understands their position and feelings in a real and authentic manner to which I have only seen the French pull off. When discussing this film with others on the course, many complained of the subtitles, I did not find them distracting at all. On the whole, the film is executed very well and I understand Davis? point that the movie did not fulfill historical standards but one must be prepared for that. The film is a romance that tickles the moviegoers senses, allows one to become involved with the characters and if one is aware enough to observe a little history along the way; it is not an appropriate historical or proper story reference in the way that Davis? book is. As long as they are appreciated in different contexts, I believe both are useful and are laden with rich forms of historical reality.

Islands YMCA Gymnastics Team to Defend its Title in Savannah

Winning a championship is a great feeling for any athlete and team in any sport. The Islands YMCA gymnastics team from Wilmington Island won the 00 National Team Developmental Championship at the Niagara Falls Convention Center in New York last year. This year they will be defending their title in Savannah.

Defending a championship title in any sport is an honor and a privilege. Defending a title in one's hometown is electrifying and gives one an advantage. The "Islands Girls" YMCA gymnastics team has the honor this year to defend its national YMCA title right here in Savannah. The event will take place at the Savannah Civic Center from July July 7. Co-Meet Coordinator and coach of the "Islands Girls", Carol Henry, said, "It is an extreme honor for our association and its gymnastics booster club to hold a prestigious event like this. This is the third time we've hosted this event and it's the largest in 8 years. There will be over 1,00 gymnasts coming to the meet. They represent approximately 110 YMCA's from around the United States."

When you go into their practice facility in the brand new YMCA on Wilmington Island, there are hundreds of trophies lining the walls. Over the past few years, the "Islands Girls" have won numerous awards and titles. In 000, the team placed third in the overall competition, and in 001 they came in at a close second place. Then, finally, last year the "Islands Girls" brought home the national title. So far this year their United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) level eight team was first in the 00 Valentine Invitational meet in Tucker, Georgia. Their level five and Novice team finished first in the 00 YMCA Georgia state meet.

"Hopefully this year's success will help us repeat as national champions," stated Henry. "We're so proud of our team. We always try to instill two main thoughts in the girls to be successful. I feel these thoughts give the girls pride and determination. The first thought is, 'Attitude is everything' and 'God gave you talent-you need to use it'."

To understand a gymnastic meet, you have to know the four different events the gymnasts will compete in the floor exercise, the vault, the balance beam, and the uneven bars. The winner with the most points form each category is declared the winner of that individual event. Whoever accumulates the most points in all categories combined is the overall individual winner. The team with the most high point place finishers then earns the team title.

The gymnasts also compete at different ability levels. The competition breaks down into five levels of competition at the national meet. Level five and six are the compulsory divisions. They compete and follow the USAG routines and rules. Novice division is the beginner optional division and follows the USAG level seven rules (Level five, six, and novice only compete for individual awards. There is not a team competition at this level).

The developmental level is an intermediate optional division and they follow the USAG level eight rules. They will receive individual event awards after each session, but the top twenty girls from junior and senior age group will qualify to compete for the top ten all around places. There are 70 girls entered into this division, and the top ten teams will win an award.

The championship level is the highest level of competition. There are 147 athletes in this top division. They follow USAG level nine and ten rules. The girls will compete on the first day, and only the top 80 will qualify for the semi finals on the second day of competition. After the second day of competition, the individual all around places will be decided after the points from the two days are added together. The top ten all around athletes for junior and senior age group will be announced as the "00 YMCA Women's All American Team Members" (The Islands YMCA team has had five girls make it to this team in past meets). The top ten championship teams will be awarded for this division.

 

The Islands YMCA Gymnastics is coached at each level. Karie Wise and Martha Garcia coach the level three and four gymnasts, Beth Rathburn coaches the level five/novice gymnasts, Natalie Stein coaches level five and six gymnasts, Carol Henry coaches level seven, eight, and nine gymnasts, and Romy Mumalova is the Head Competitive Coach.

Gymnastics is an expensive sport due to the amount of traveling that the girls do throughout the year. "Many of our recreational and teen girls receive financial aid through our scholarship program offered by the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. If it weren't for this benefit, they would not be able to have such great opportunities. Even some of our girls on the national team received aid," said Coach Carol Henry.

Even though gymnastics is not a sanctioned sport in Georgia high schools, many of the "Islands Girls" gymnastics female athletes have had offers to join college gymnastics teams. Some of the colleges who've shown interest are located in Texas, California, Colorado, and Kentucky. Right now only a few girls represent college teams. Two gymnasts who graduated in 1 went on to participate on college teams. Amy Sue Fescharek joined the Wolfpack of North Carolina State and Fateema Turay joined the Bulldogs of Yale University gymnastics teams. Fateema was the captain of Yale's gymnastic team this year.

The 00 YMCA women's national gymnastics championship is here in Savannah. Once again the dates are scheduled from July - July 7, 00. "Contracts with the city where made a year in a half ago. There are 8 volunteer chairmen that have put in numerous hours in since January of this year to coordinate this event. It will take approximately 400 volunteers during the week of July nd to July 7th to make this a success." "Models wanted for bar promotion… candidates must be physically fit…" (See figure 1). This ad and others like it are printed everyday throughout newspapers and magazines that are read by millions of teenaged girls and women. Some girls may glance at the ads, and pay them no attention. But there are others who feel the "perfect" people in the ads are the ones they should strive to be like to live a more fulfilling life. As most people already know, nobody is perfect. In order to be as close to perfect as possible, extreme measures are taken to achieve the "perfect" body. Because the average teenage girl cannot afford plastic surgery or liposuction, they take the route they can afford, not eating. This is where eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia come in. Because of the "images of perfection" portrayed by everyday media, thousands of girls and women suffer and die from starving themselves to be perfect.

The two most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. These disorders are most frequently connected with young women who are dissatisfied with the way they look. The contributing factor to them feeling that way is the way the mass media repeatedly equates female beauty and success with a level of thinness that is unattainable for most women ("Adolescent Body Image…"). Anorexia can be diagnosed by the following symptoms; refusal to maintain weight (this is over the lowest weight considered normal for their age and height), an intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, a distorted body image and, in women, three consecutive missed menstrual periods without pregnancy (Farley). Bulimia can be diagnosed by; recurrent episodes of binge eating, a feeling of a lack of control over eating during binges, use of self-induced vomiting, laxatives or diuretics, strict dieting, fasting, or vigorous exercise and a persistent over-concern with body shape and weight (Gottlieb 88). In short, both disorders are extremely unhealthy and dangerous ways to go about losing weight.

The biggest issue concerning these two eating disorders and the media is who or what is to blame for the thousands of young girls and women suffering and dying for perfection. Is it television? Is it movies? Or is it the ads throughout magazines and newspapers featuring the many known models of the day? Some feel the influence comes from one of the three, others feel the influence stems from all of the three. To examine these queries, many studies and surveys have been done to find the answers.

The study produced results that on average, the "thin ideal" television commercials had a negative impact on the girls' moods and body image for both groups of girls ("Adolescent Body Image…"). Obviously, from the results, one can see that regardless of age or maturity level, if you are unhappy with the way you look, people on television who are the epitome of how you view beauty will further affect they way you view yourself.

For years going out to movies, or in more modern days, renting movies to watch at home has been another popular activity used for entertainment. Millions of people watch movies. And a lot like television, many notable stars are featured in the movies. The same people who watch television and idolize its stars do the same for movies, but now they just have to pay to do it. Not only do the "perfect" people in the movies perpetuate the low self-worth that can lead to picking up bad eating habits, but the movie plots themselves can also be discouraging. For example, the movie Shallow Hal, the main character in the movie was generally mean and rude to overweight women, as people are everyday. He only wanted to date thin, beautiful women. Because of his prejudice, a spell was put upon him which caused him to have a sort of backward vision. Every overweight woman he saw appeared thin in his eyes. Due to his distorted view of women, he only dated exceptionally large women. Because of this, onlookers and his friends constantly ridiculed him. But don't big women need love too? At the end of the movie, the spell wore off and his normal way of perceiving woman was restored, but now he had more of a respect for big women. The way the main character felt in the beginning of the movie is the way many men really feel. The sad part of that is that big women know that this is the way a lot of men feel. What do they do about it; not eat to conform. Yet again, this is another part of modern media adding to some women's' already low self-image.

The last question of whom or what is to blame for the distorted images girls follow are the magazine ads that all usually feature well-known models. No matter what magazine, be it fashion, teen or business, there is some clothing or perfume ad featuring half-dressed people, appearing to be so happy and loving life. The average woman sees 400 to 600 advertisements per day ("Body Image and Advertising"). Ads send the message that "if you are not a size one, you can not wear Calvin Klein jeans" or "you have to be thin to wear Tommy Girl perfume." Women tend to compare themselves to everybody around them. With "perfect" women on nearly every page of a magazine, some cannot help but wonder if they are as pretty as the woman in the picture. And if they feel they do not compare with the models, some will do whatever it takes to match up. The main course of action taken is not eating and over-exercising.

From looking at three common types of media, one can see why people believe that the media is a large contributing factor to the rise in cases of anorexia and bulimia. Whether it is television, movies, or magazines, a woman who is unhappy with herself will emulate who she believes will make her happy. Unfortunately, if that means starving oneself skinny, then so be it. Some critics believe that only people with low self-esteem will do almost anything to change who they are and become someone else in hopes of gaining self-confidence. This speculation may be true in

some cases but not all. In a survey done by Teen People, out of 100 well-rounded, strong-minded, A-plus students 56 percent of them claim to have been negatively influenced about their appearance by television and magazine ads (Todd 0). They also said that the clothing ads featured in magazines had the most negative influence. The theory that low self-esteem equals low self-confidence goes right out the window.

Women should not subject themselves to unhealthy practices to try to be flawless like the women in magazine ads. Everyone has flaws; even the women in the ads are not flawless themselves. The models' features are enhanced with props, lighting angles and computer techniques. Their shapes and sizes are also altered. If they have the slightest flaw unwanted by a photographer such as, blemishes, freckles, lines, and wrinkles, they are edited out. And in movies, body doubles are used when certain body parts of the actors do not match up with the "perfect" image. Pictures are also edited, touched up and doctored to fit the "image of perfection." ("Body Image and the Media…") Therefore, even though the people in the pictures and on television and movies seem to be perfect, nobody is perfect.
