European Exploration Age

Although the exploration of the new world had many gains and benefits, it also had it's many problems. The English people had many reasons to explore, such as trading, over population, and just the need for explorers to explore. Without the finding of the new world we would obviously not be here today, and would all be speaking a different language today if it weren't for it. Along with that comes the horrors of slavery and war that occurred because of this exploration. You can argue either way on whether it was good or bad, because it was good and bad for different people.

There were many reasons for the English and other countries to explore these new lands. The competition for trading was getting very harsh with the English, the Spanish and Dutch finding routes to the Indies. Although they were looking for a route to Asia, they found a whole new territory. Over population was also a reason for exploration. The English did not have a problem with over-population, but they thought they did, so an idea was for people to get on ships and go over seas, for jobs and homes there. With all of these explorers having no places east to explore, they needed somewhere to go, so they went West, and not knowing what they were looking for found the Americas.

To the native Americans, it was a horrifying experience. They were kicked off their own land and enslaved. The Africans were taken from their homes and enslaved, many Africans and native Americans died because of this. The exploration also brought about many wars. These wars were fought between many different groups. The natives went to war with the English, which resulted in the slaughter of many natives. The English also fought with the Spanish over land and gold. It eventually brought on the Revolutionary war and the Civil war. When America was supposed to be a place of free warship, in many places, if you were Jewish or atheist, or even Roman Catholic, you were ostracized and harshly punished.

To counter that, it was amazing for the new settlers. There was all kinds of crops, such as rice, sugar and mainly tobacco. There was also much gold to be found out west in the later years. With this establishment there was freedom of religion and such, but only in certain colonies. Without the colonization of America, all of the Americans today would not have the same liberties they now have. The gaining of territory also helps the English and Spanish have jobs and places for their people to be.

There is no risk that has no negative effects, of course the negative effects of the exploration were very severe, but someone was going to eventually find it, and it was going to happen. You can't have positive effects without the negative ones, they go hand in hand. The exploration that occurred is over all beneficial, because it was inevitable that this was going to happen.

Essay Paper

Psychology in Secondary Education

Marcella King

September 5, 00

Humanistic education is made up of loosely related assumptions and techniques. The movement emerged as a reaction against prevailing approaches in education. It happened during a time in American history when there was dissatisfaction with many aspects of our society as well as a distrust of authority. The view stressed that humans control much of their own behavior, and parents and teachers should allow freedom for children to explore and develop. This view was proposed by three eminent psychologists Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers and Arthur Combs.

In the humanistic approach to learning, teachers are encouraged to create a classroom environment that address students' needs and helps them develop a positive attitude about themselves and others. The non-cognitive values of emotions, values and self-perception are stressed. Techniques used in teaching this approach are the use of role-playing, values clarification and abolishing the traditional grading system.

Teachers are encouraged to allow students to make choices and to manage their own learning. It is also important to establish a warm and positive atmosphere in the classroom. The teacher should also serve as a facilitator and helper and use object lessons in the classroom as well as setting a good example for her or his students.

I believe that there are many ways that I could facilitate the humanistic approach in my classroom. One way is to collaborate with students in designing classroom rules at the beginning of the year. Another possibility is for students to give suggestions on various topics they would like to research either as an individual or in a group.

As a teacher I believe it is important to make the students feel valuable and cared for. Being able to call a student by his or her name is an important way to build a relationship. One way to learn students' names quickly would be to take pictures of each student at the beginning of the year as a quick referral point. Greeting each student at the door at the beginning of the period with a smile and positive comment helps build a positive relationship with students. Letting students know your office hours at school if they need to talk to you about a situation can also be helpful. Giving a variety of choices to do for a project lets students help with decision- making. Placing a suggestion box in the classroom for ideas or concerns without students signing their name can create a safe and caring environment.

In the local school that I have worked with, the chorus participates in a number of civic activities such as singing at care facilities or at the hospital Christmas party. I believe these activities help students become sensitive to the needs of others as well as becoming a role model for other students.

I know there are other ways that I can encourage the humanistic approach in my classroom. By doing so, I will instill some of the best values my students will need as they become valuable assets to society.

This document has been prepared in order to compare the different features of racing wheels. The Xtreme Customizing race car needs to be fitted with four lightweight racing wheels that are able to withstand the stress produced on and off the race track. During my reaserch I have come across many different products. These products all vary in size, weight, cost, strength and design according to the application. Throughout my reasearch, I have found that the metal alloy being used to make the wheel has a direct effect on these properties. I have taken this into consideration to help find the best product to suit our needs.

The main three types of material used in making racing wheels is aluminum, steel and chrome. Aluminum wheels are the lightest available on the market today and are resonably priced. This seems to be the reason for the gaining popularity of the aluminum alloy wheels among racing teams. The steel rims are a bit heavier, stronger and less expensive than the aluminum ones. These are usaully used in heavier applications such as drag racing where any other wheel would twist and bend under the stress. The heaviest and most expensive rims would have to be chrome based. Although there the heaviest and most expensive, they by far have the best finish, look and style. Many racers like these because they make the car stand out the most and are well respected by the fans. I believe because of our racing style and our vehicle of choice, it would be best to go with a lightweight aluminum racing wheel.

Another thing that should be considered is the spoke design. Each wheel may range from having anywhere from three to sixteen spokes. The spokes on a wheel help to transfer stess evenly throughout the part. It also helps to cool down the brakes by circulating the air flow through the tire to the brake pads. The fewer the spokes, the faster the cooling rate while on the track. Although choosing a wheel with very few spokes takes away from the strength of the wheel, so a medium must be reached. I believe that it would be safe and wise for us to choose a rim with seven or eight spokes. This will allow just enough air to keep the brakes cool without sacraficing alot of strength.

In the racing world the ideal rim would be one of very light weight and very high strength. Usaully to get one property you have to sacrifice the other. A very light weight rim will not have the high strength tolerence a heavy rim would and vice versa.

The rims that we require for the Xtreme Customizing Race Car do not have to be extremely strong because they're to be mounted on a lightweight car. Although it must be able to handle the everyday stresses of racing. Motegi Racing says our newly designed lightweight racing wheels are able to cope with the everyday stresses on and off the track. Many other companies also state there aluminum wheels to be the strongest and lightest among the competition.

I have reasearched a different variety of wheels and come to conclusion on which one will best suit our needs.

The most important decision when a team is assembled is what the goal of the team will be. It is imperative that the teams' goals are well defined (Tools for Teams pg ). Depending on the type of team sometimes the goal is given to them and sometimes the team chooses it themselves. In the case of a Self-Directing or Self-Governing the team chooses their own goal (Tools for Teams pg 17). This can be a time consuming process. If the team chooses a problem that is too broad in scope it can make it difficult for the team to handle, resulting in frustration and possible conflict (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Later on in the process there is the possibility for the team to under or over analyze the problem. In the case of under analyzing the problem the team may jump to conclusions (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/). This maybe caused by a team that is being directed to resolve the problem quickly or if the team feels rushed. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that it usually is not detected until well after analyzing the problem, when the team is determining possible solutions. Over analyzing the problem can lead to paralysis and team frustration by endless data collection and debating. If the team lingers to long analyzing the problem it usually gets personal and when it does conflict will follow.

Member participation is also an important factor to reduce the potential for conflict. When making team decisions it may not be necessary that all members be present. However, if their expertise is required, or if they will be affected by the decision then they should be present. Leaving a team member out of an important discussion will build resentment (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

In some cases a team may spend a significant amount of time and energy on analyzing and identifying the problem that they just run out of steam. The team should have developed some guidelines to be used to develop the solution. During the discussion of a proposed solution and how to implement the solution members may feel that they have nothing left to give and simply choose to ignore or have lost focus on the guidelines. Member participation will drop or short cuts will be taken. By not keeping the guidelines or crteria in mind when discussing the proposed solution, and how to implement it the team will negate all the prior work they have done (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Conflict can be productive

A team without conflict, in the end, may not have determined the best solution to the problem. The real problem occurs when the conflict gets personal, or when the team fails to manage the conflict. Conflict is just another obstacle, and by overcoming this obstacle the team grows stronger through teamwork, interpersonal skills, trust and innovation (Tools for Teams pg ). Also, the sense of accomplishment by overcoming such a large obstacle is a learning experience, brings the members closer, and can increase a team's morale (http//www.vta.spcomm.uiuc.edu/).

Noninvasive Brain Imaging Techniques

To document brain structure

CT scans (Computerized Tomography)

Also called CAT scans (computerized axial tomography)

MRI scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

fMRI scans (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

See below after discussion of the PET scan.

CT scans (Computerized tomography)

Synonymous with "CAT" scan (Computer-Axial Tomography)

Tomography = picture

several X-rays are taken of a thin slice of the brain from different vantage points while person is inside a large cylinder.

A Two-dimensional, often black and white photograph of a horizontal brain "slice" is produced by the computer

"For a full brain scan 180 separate scans are made." (Reber & Reber, 001, p. 1).

Least expensive of the brain imaging techniques.

MRI scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Exploits the magnetic principle of molecules, specifically of the hydrogen atom.

A computer combines information about magnetic fields and radio waves to generate a picture of the brain.

several X-rays are taken of the brain from different vantage points while person is inside a large cylinder

The MRI scan produces high-resolution, -dimensional, colored-pictures of the brain.

Most expensive of the brain imaging techniques

Noninvasive Brain Imaging Techniques

To document brain activity

PET scans

fMRI scans (Functional MRIs)

PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography)

A water-based solution of radioactive oxygen is injected into a vein where it is then carried throughout the blood vessels and brain.

The radioactive oxygen breaks into positrons

very small particles

The positrons degrade

While degrading, gamma rays are emitted.

PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography)

The gamma rays occur with different densities for each area of the brain.

The density of gamma rays in each area is translated by the computer and depicted as separate colors

red=most dense, yellow, quite dense, green=moderately dense, blue, least dense.

Blood vessels enlarge in the area(s) of the brain that are active, hence gamma rays are quite dense when coming from active brain regions.

Can easily view which parts of the brain becomes active during (are involved in) particular behaviors

PET Scans of Brains

Normal v. Schizophrenic

Functional MRI

This method functions in a manner similar to the MRI.

fMRI uses the magnetic properties of hemoglobin to generate its real-time activities of the brain

"When the oxygen is absorbed [by firing neurons] the hemoglobin no longer carries the oxygen, so we can refer to blood as being oxygenated or deoxygenated. Oxygenated blood has magnetic properties, but deoxygenated blood does not. fMRI techniques calculate a ratio of oxygenated to deoxygenated blood in the local area." (Willingham, 001, p. 44).
