Man's nature is a varied terrain, rife with shortcomings and surprising abilities. The two authors, London and Steinback, make use of this unusual dichotomy to convey their purpose. Man's often-pompous ego hinders his decision-making abilities, but behind this sinful shortcoming lays perseverance, which is astounding at times. Such an example of this could be derived from the two characters of Flight and To Build a Fire. Firstly, the extreme nature of their respective environments is harsh and impersonal, but proved that man can go a very long way to survive despite adverse conditions. As for man's shortcomings, they are both numerous and varied, from Pepe's wine induced decision to kill a man for an insult, to the man's decision to go out alone in the freezing temperatures. In the end, everyone has to make a decision, to either humble himself or think rather of dignity. These decisions and actions by man in general, serve to propel the story's development of the characters done only in the way London and Steinback could have.

The environments both characters traverse are easily the most extreme environments in the world. In Flight Pepe's injuries, including a piece of stone impaling his hand, the eventual infection and gangrenous effects thereof would really hinder someone trying to escape through a scorching desert. His dogged attempts at escape from the inevitable repercussions of his sins really highlight man's perseverance. In comparison, the man from To Build a Fire poured his whole being into building a fire, yet in the end it was not enough, such is the fate of arrogance. The environments in these situations bring out the besting man, pushing him to the limit.

The sins of the characters portrayed are those, which everyone has dealt with, pride, passion, vanity and the like. The plotlines of both the stories are initiated by the sins of the main characters. Pepe's sin of getting drunk, losing his temper, and killing a man are very serious sins, the repercussions of which are felt throughout the rest of the story. Comparably the man's sins are mainly associated with arrogance, in that he believed the old man's advice did not apply to him, that he could handle the arctic winter alone. Not so, even in death he chose to think of dying with 'dignity' rather than making peace with God. The two authors used the contrasting natures of man to depict characters to which anyone could relate.

After all is said and done, there is always one last chance to redeem yourself, that chance came rather expectedly to the man from To Build a Fire, he knew his likely fate half an hour in advance. Yet even after knowing that he will most likely die, he sat there thinking about how they would find him, not about the sins he has committed, or the people he has wronged. On the other hand, Pepe exemplifies true repentance by the simple sign of the cross the moment before he dies. These two decisions made reflect on the characters; for they were no more holy, just more human, for to be human is to err.

One of the characteristics of these stories are there amazing characterization for such a small story. Both heroes made bad decisions, and sometimes made up for them with acts of humility and repentance. Their human perseverance shines through their valiant struggle to stay alive in the most harsh and dangerous of natural environments. Just as everyone has, they made mistakes, sins which led to their imminent demise. In the end everyone makes a decision, either for better or worse, for that is the nature of human frailty. London and Steinback crafted their words well, truly the masters of their domain, even if not of their lives.

Why did Europe go to war in 114?

The 'Great War' of 114-118 became the first war anyone had ever seen of its kind, not only that, but it was the First World War. It did not, however, begin as a world war. It started in Europe for several reasons.

In the ten years running up to 114 there were two rival powers in Europe. These were the Triple Entente, which was made up of France, Great Britain and Russia. There was also the Central Powers, or Triple Alliance, consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. There was a long-standing rivalry between France and Germany, which had begun in 1871, when Germany defeated France, and took over Alsace-Lorraine from the French, because of this Germany was expecting France to try and take back Alsace-Lorraine from them. Germany was also beginning to feel threatened, as members of the Triple Entente surrounded them. For these reasons in the years leaded up to the First World War there was a lot of under surface tension.

Essay help on Why Did Europe go to war in 1914?

Germany was fastly becoming one of the greatest powers in Europe, and by 118 unarguably was one of the greatest and powerfulest countries in Europe. The Kaiser Wilhelm II was in control of a navy consisting of 7 battleships, and the best trained and equipped army in the world. Even so, the Germans were still wary of fighting a battle on the west and east front. The Russians however had there own secret weapon too, it was called the Russian steamroller and was a peasant army with millions of members, the Germans were afraid of all the advances which were being made to this army and wanted to destroy the power before it became fully modernised.

The German general, Count Alfred von Schlieffen knew that if Germany wanted to win a was over Europe, they would need a quick and speedy plan to gain victory in the west. He drew up a plan which he thought would defeat France within six weeks, in which time the Steamroller could not have been fully mobilised. Having beaten the French they could then be fastly transported to face the Russians. Many Germans thought that the struggle for power over Europe was between the Germans and the Russians.

However all of these points were just small, although vital, effects. The final pin which burst the bubble of disillusioned people with ideas for a united Europe, was the assassination of the heir to the Austrian throne. On 8 June 114 Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were shot dead by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, because Austria-Hungary and Serbia were having a dispute over who should rule over the Serbs of Bosnia. Austria-Hungary then decided to go to war against Serbia in retaliation. Because of the aforementioned European alliance system, this war automatically drew in several other countries. Russia sided with Serbia, whereas Germany gave their support to Austria-Hungary. France and Great Britain, as members of the Triple Entente along side Russia, back with Serbia and joined Russia. Thus the most powerful countries in Europe started a war that would last four long years and kill millions and millions of innocent people, in one of the worst atrocities man has seen.

Among the defining affairs in my life, the most poignant is an ill history that has taken place overseas, boldly prompted to my eyes and beginning prior to my birth. It is this dire event, replete with poverty and ignorance, that fuels my ambitions for justice and equity. A sad story 6,10 miles away from the United States in a country unknown to the rest of the world still resonates within my being. Every day that passes this ghost grows further from the world as time separates it from the minds of so many others. However, each day the personal significance of this misfortune grows stronger. As I approach a pivotal point in my life, where ambitions can be realized, I feel the impact of this story stronger than ever before.

This story is the Dominican History. A history full of masacres, tyrannies, and constant violations towards society, a story that does not yet have a happy ending. Despite Dominican's suffering and hardship, these people sacrifice whatever they have in hope of justice and prosperity for future generations. Many immigrate illegally to Puerto Rico risking and many times losing there lives. Many leave their loved ones behind, and still more never return . My mother emigrated from the Dominican Republic to the United States more than twenty years ago due to the hard times. In flights imersed with fright and sadness from " El Aereopuerto Internacional de las Americas" to New York and later to Rhode Island she physically left her country. However, she carried with her those nights of hunger and tears. To this country she brought her hope, spirituality, gratitude for life and ambitions that are quintessential of the Dominican spirit. I have been blessed to inherit these bittersweet aspects of her character, which manifest in times of need. My mothers struggle has been inspirational and very influential to me. She is deeply scarred by these misfortunes. As her daughter I witness her psychological and physical scars, and, as her daughter I acquire my own.

Growing up a first generation American is a blessing. I am able to embrace two cultures, two languages, and acquire an international perspective of the world. Even at a very early age, I expressed interest and pride in my Dominican heritage. I soon became a person dedicated to two flags, a citizen of two nations. However, some of the most affecting experiences that attribute to my passion and knowledge are those that are painful. The hardships were never truly left behind. I remember once in first grade she had gone to pick me up early from school. Some minor authorities starting questioning her, questions she did not know how to answer, questions she did not understand. I saw her sob and sob in desesperation, hands on face and cheeks wet from tears.Following her departure, my mother was faced with multiple cases of severe discrimination. I still have vivid memories of "neighborly" exchanges of words. Some entailed "Stupid spick" being screamed into my face., although I was born in America. Even more disturbing are the prolonged events that unraveled in school while teachers turned deaf ears.

I am driven by the knowledge that the direct experience of war far exceeds all the adversity I have encountered, and may confront. My father lost his sight, but many more children in the world lose their fathers. My family has experienced discrimination, however, it is not nearly as horrific as having your own people killed before your home. Year upon year my family receives pictures from Lebanon. One I will never forget is the image of my cousins enjoying a beautiful day outside. Their faces are full of smiles. All the while, a tank sits inconspicuously in the background. Their perseverance and undying spirit is so incredibly moving.

Online writing services offer help on my heritage

--- Recently, my father shared with me a touching bit of information the day of my birth he had prayed that I would grow to help the people of Lebanon. I intend to.

Due to this painful moment in my family's history, my interest in the field of law flourished. By knowing and witnessing the suffering of inequity, a career in justice became of incredible importance to me.

Life As a Vegetable

Unmotivated. Indecisive. Underachiever. Inactive. Unenthusiastic. Immobile. These are just some of the expressions used to describe a ?couch potato.? In simpler terms, a ?couch potato? is someone who sits at home all day lounging on the sofa, watching hour after hour of television, and never exercising. A common meal consists of popcorn or chips, washed down by sodas or Kool-Aid. If you know someone who fits this portrayal, you may want to tell them that a life spent as a ?couch potato? cannot be a healthy one, mentally, physically, or socially.

?Couch potatoes? do not always start off with this lifestyle. It gradually takes hold, stemming from a lack of things to do, and putting off what needs to be done. Take my friend Taylor for example, a classic American loafer. Taylor made outstanding grades in high school, played basketball for the varsity team, and spent his summers lifeguarding at the beach in Pensacola, Florida. From there he moved on to graduate with a Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences from Florida State University. After graduation, with no job lined up and nowhere to go, he decided to move in with his brother in Gainesville, Florida. This is where his proficiency in relaxation began, and a life as a couch potato took hold. Since his brother is a student at the local college, his parents shell out his brother?s rent while he is still enrolled in school. With no bills to pay, and nobody to tell him what to do, Taylor decided that now would be the best time to take a break from life, and do nothing.

This put an immense constraint on his mental health; he stopped reading, writing, and thinking all together. The only mental challenge he gets, is the crossword puzzle on the second to last page of the weekly TV guide, which he rarely finishes. His most complex plans for a day, is how to get by until bedtime, with as little moving as possible.

Taylor?s physical appearance is now paying the price. Day in and day out he lounges around the house watching sitcoms, munching down Funions, and guzzling Dr. Pepper. Not only are these snacks high in calories, they offer no nutritional value. Add junk food with a lack of exercise, and the results are going to be pretty standard, unhealthy. In a brief six months, Taylor has gained virtually twenty pounds, and has become lazier by the minute.

His life as a couch potato has led to a nonexistent social life as well. He hibernates until noon on a daily basis, and takes more than an hour to get up and get ready to go anywhere. While out and about, he is oblivious to his surroundings. There is not even a slightly motivating idea in his head that would involve any human contact. The only thought on his mind is the left seat cushion on his beige leather couch, and the fact that he is missing tonight?s installment of The Simpsons.

This is no way to live life, so get up, get out, and do something. If there is time to do nothing, then there is time to do everything. Do not be a ?couch potato,? live life to its entirety, before you end up like Taylor. Unhealthy!
