Abstract

Completing a degree has been a life long dream. I have started and stopped many times along the way. By enrolling in the University of Phoenix and due to my life changes, this dream will become a reality.

This is a very difficult paper to write. Until this assignment, I have not really thought about my personal goals outside of ensuring my son finished college and finding my soul mate. I have started school so many times. Each time for reasons I cannot even explain to myself, I have not completed any degree program. I started out wanting a degree in Accounting and lacked only two classes to finish an Associates Degree. Once I began working in the accounting field, I found it somewhat dull and redundant. Although the classes were very interesting, I found the day to day tasks for this field to be monotonous. I was very proud of myself, going to school and raising a child while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. But what is the point if you do not complete the requirements? My son is in his last year of college; therefore, he needs less of my time and monetary support and I now have a very special husband who is supporting my decision to return to school and complete my education.

At first I thought the reason why I was returning to school was due to my work environment. During my last review in March ,00, I received an exceptional promotion and, of course, the money that goes along with it. This was all due to my diligence in learning new processes, applications and my willingness to go above and beyond, and work the hours necessary to succeed. I believe I was too dedicated or maybe even unwise to put this kind of time and effort into a job, because I did not have a degree and everyone around me did. I think, in my own way, I was trying to show them I was just as good without a degree. During this review, my manager indicated this was as far as I would go without a degree; therefore, I enrolled in University Of Phoenix mainly for this reason. It has taken me 11 years at this company to be at the level I am. If I had this degree or any other, the process would not have taken so long.

Write a research paper on Personal Goals

During the last several weeks, attending the Skills for Profession Development class, I have found my motives for returning to school are not exactly as I had thought. Strangers and instructors have not really changed my motives but have made me look further within myself to see my true motives. Reviewing all the posts, lecture notes, and reading material made me realize going back to school is neither about more money nor climbing the ladder. I am perfectly satisfied in my current position and salary. I really enjoy my job and the company I work for. Therefore, if I did not pursue this degree or any other, my job would not be at risk and I would be content.

Do I really want to be content? I want this degree for me! I want to make myself feel more valuable, better educated, and to make my mother, husband, and son proud of me. A Bachelor of Science in Information Technology is something I have always wanted. I have learned quite a bit from the technical personnel at Ciba Vision, but I want to know this myself. Of course, at times you need assistance but to have the knowledge base upfront is incredible. I never thought of myself as a "techie". The more I explore this field, the more I want to complete this degree.

Choosing the University of Phoenix was not an easy choice. I looked at numerous colleges both online and attending in a classroom. The aspect of going back to a classroom environment just did not appeal to me nor did it have the flexibility I require due to a very demanding job. The commitment of a certain time each week and the commute was just not something I wanted to go back to. Online classes have the flexibility I required but choosing the right University was very complicated. The amount of research for each University in my top five lists was long and was a very difficult task. The University of Phoenix has the one thing I was unable to find in all the others. They catered more toward the adult than the young adult right out of high school. The courses are better related to the individual who has been in the workplace.

In conclusion, I have high hopes that, at this point in my life, I will see this degree through to completion. My life as a whole has changed to a great extent and I am in a place within myself that I feel I will accomplish this dream.

How the Ethiopian Crisis affected the L-O-N.

 Mussolini wanted rich fertile land; wealthy minerals revenge and to build up his countries over seas empire.

 Mussolini attacked Ethiopia knowing that the League would not put forward sanctions against him.

 Lack of effectiveness by the sanctions set on Japan encouraged Mussolini to invade Abyssinia.

Custom writing offers papers on How the Ethiopian Crisis affected the league of nations.

 Ethiopia was set in between two Italian colonies where he could amass force.

 Ethiopia was poor and militarily week.

 Mussolini tricked the L-O-N into thinking he was trying to settle the dispute; however he was actually preparing a full-scale attack on Haile Selassie's country.

 Britain and France, the leading European countries in charge of the League were afraid of offending Mussolini by placing sanctions against him.

 Italy was seen as one of the strongest allies Britain and France had against Germany.

 The Stresa Pact had been signed in 1935; Mussolini may have thought that Britain and France would turn a blind eye against him if he invaded the inferior African country.

 The Hoare-Laval plan was brought into action on the 4th September 1935.

 This plan was to give Mussolini and Italy 2/3's of Abyssinia.

 However the British Foreign Minister Hoare, was forced to resign as soon as these secret plans became public.

 From somewhere, the League of Nations was being undermined from within its members.

 Mussolini rejected these plans; and so in October 1935 he and his army invaded Ethiopia on a full-scale attack.

 Mussolini became a bully, he invaded a helpless country which fought with spears and 18th Century rifles; no match for a 20th Century army.

 This time round, the league was ideally placed to impose sanctions.

 Loans, Italian imports (rubber tin and metals) and exports, arms dealing were all immediately banned.

 However, the power in the Italian engine was discussed in great detail. The import of oil to the Italian army was not banned as the League thought that if this had been carried out, the decision would have been un-favourable with America.

 The cabinet put in place to decide the bans was worried that their own economic interests would be harmed by this ban.

 The cabinet was also informed that if exports to Italy involving coal were to be banned, then 30,000 British coal miners would lose their jobs.

 A quick resolution to stop the Abyssinian crisis would have been to block off the Suez Canal, which was open to the Italian army.

 However the problem with this sanction was that relations with Italy would have been in tatters. Britain and France did not want a war with Italy, as she was a strong ally.

 Problems within the League could only get worse. Rise Chancellor Adolf Hitler.

 Hitler marched his troops into the Rhineland on the 7th March 1936, a prohibited act against the Treaty of Versailles (Paris Peace Settlement).

 Hopes of France backing the sanctions proposed against Italy were now all but over.

 The French Government and army were desperate for the support of Italy. They were prepared to give into Mussolini over Abyssinia.

 Surprisingly to many the British and French officials believed their handling over the Ethiopian Crisis would strengthen their stand against Hitler.

 However in November 1936, the Italians and Germans signed the Rome-Berlin axis, an agreement between Mussolini and Hitler.

 Italy became oblivious to the Leagues orders and sanctions.

 Mussolini, in May 1936 took Addis Abada (Ethiopian capital).

 By 9th May 1936 the Italian hot head had annexed the entire country.

 Haile Selassie resigned and fled the country.

 The league watched on helpless to the pleas for help.

Conclusion- Collective security had been shown up as an empty promise, it lacked depth and the League had failed again. Would an army have helped the league? The League of Nations once again proved that it was out of its depth in trying to deal with bigger nations. By cutting off the Suez Canal much trouble and loss of life would have been saved.

Everyone has at least one experience in their lifetime that changes their outlook on life, their appreciation for what they have, and them as a whole. For me, that experience occurred last Christmas when my family and I visited Hale House. Hale House, which was established by Mother Hale in 17, is a non-profit organization that helps children whose mothers cannot care for them. I had read about Hale House on the internet in November and I decided to tell my parents about it and suggested that we take a trip there when it got closer to the holiday season. From the beginning of November to the middle of December we collected toys, books, food, clothing, games, and many other things to give to the children when we went. Our living room was filled with bags upon bags of gifts for the children we would soon visit. On December 15th we loaded up the car and drove into the city. That day changed my life forever and no matter what, I know that I will never forget it. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see and what I was about to live that day. Visiting Hale House demonstrated character, service, and leadership. But most importantly, it gave me a new appreciation for life.

One quality that I demonstrated by going to Hale House was character. Character is who you are as a person, your values, and what is important to you. I feel that going to Hale House enriched my character very much. It made it easier for me to relate to people and for me to interact and be with children. These children had been through so many hard times in their lives yet they were completely open to the idea of spending the day with a complete stranger. Being with these children for the day made me see that even though they had so little, they still had such an appreciation for us being there and for all the small things in life. I feel that it made me more well rounded as a person and that it taught me kindness and compassion. Most importantly, it showed me that despite what I may believe there is a world outside of my mine and that not everyone is as fortunate as I am. Hail House bettered my character and taught me things that I thought I would never learn.

Another quality that was demonstrated through this event was service. When you provide a service to someone you are doing something that helps others. Going to Hale House was a service because I helped those in need and those less fortunate. I was able to make them smile and bring joy into those children's lives. I did something to benefit others and I saw that giving is so much better than getting. Sometimes you give and what you get out of it is so much better than you could have ever imagined it to be. I learned that when you give with an open heart the rewards are amazing. I provided a service to the children and I helped those in need.

The last quality that I demonstrated through this experience was leadership. Leadership is taking initiative, doing something positive, organizing an event, and motivating others. I did all of these things through Hale House. I organized the trip that my family would take and I found the organization we would visit. I took the initiative and motivated everyone in my family to go and to collect things to bring with us. Going there also helped motivate the children and bring some happiness to them. I took on the role of leadership by organizing, motivating, and helping others.

Visiting Hale House was a life changing experience for me. I was doing something for the benefit of others and at the same time I was learning things that only that experience could have taught me. That day at Hale House taught me kindness, compassion, and respect. I demonstrated character, service, and leadership in the process. I was given an entirely new appreciation for life and I stopped taking the little things for granted. It made me believe that the only way to truly help oneself is to help others.

Analytic Essay 5/1/0

CRWT 40 Prof. Derek McKown

The Most Important Things in Life "Are friends. Best Friends."

College Essays on Fried Green Tomatoes

One of the main reasons that the novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caf, by Fannie Flagg, has been one of my favorites is the underlying theme of the importance of friendship. In addition, the novel is written in such a different manner than other novels, with a wonderful sense of humor and excellent writing. The dialogue between Evelyn and Ninny is so easy and natural, that reading it is just like hearing Ninny converse with Evelyn. It is almost as if you are sitting in the visiting room of the Rose Terrace Nursing home, eavesdropping on a conversation.

Friendship crosses boundaries of age, race and personality. I have always felt that friendship is one of the most important things in the world. The friendships that are found in the novel, as well as the movie are unique and special in their own way. In addition to the theme of the importance of friendship is the idea of family. Family, is not limited to blood relation. The novel uses third person in telling the story of Evelyn and Ninny Threadgoode at the Rose Terrace Nursing Home in the late 180s and flashbacks in the form of "The Weems Weekly" (Whistle Stop, Alabama's Weekly Bulletin) and other "bulletin" type writing.

The point of view of the novel and the film are somewhat similar. The novel is told in third person narratives, flashbacks and jumps from the 180s with Evelyn Bates and Ninny Threadgoode telling the story of Ruth Jamison and Idgie Threadgoode in the 10s through the 160s. Evelyn is a woman dealing with finding her place in the world; she is unhappy with her marriage and is going through menopause. Evelyn and Ninny develop an unlikely friendship, since Ninny is an eighty-six year old woman in a nursing home, not the usual candidate for friendship for a woman in her fifties. The film is told with a rd person omniscient point of view, telling the story of Evelyn and Ninny. The flashbacks are told in the rd person point of view with Ninny being the narrator and knowing everything about Idgie and Ruth and their story. The film takes all the flashbacks and stories revolving around Whistle Stop, the Threadgoode's and Ruth and consolidates them into the memory of Ninny Threadgoode as she is telling them to Evelyn in her visits to the nursing home. The film really simplifies the book, and I feel that it takes something away from the uniqueness of the book. Upon watching the film again, I found that the film still provides an accurate representation of the theme and meaning of the book.

The plot of the novel and the film is fairly in sync. The novel goes into so much detail about the events surrounding Whistle Stop and goes into extensive detail about the family of the Threadgoode's and the family of Sipsey, Big George and even the homeless character Smokey. In the novel, these stories add validity to the stories that Ninny tells Evelyn. In addition, Ninny isn't as "all-knowing" about the incidents in Whistle Stop as she is in the movie. Since the author of the book, also wrote the screenplay, I suppose she did this to make the movie more accessible to the viewer. Including the vast amount of details revolving around Ruth, Idgie, Smokey Lonesome, Sipsey, Big George and their extended families in the film would have been a nearly impossible task and would have made the movie much longer than it's 10 minutes.

The film has two timelines. It opens, we learn, in the 10s or 40s with Frank Bennett's truck being pulled out of the lake and then flashes forward to Evelyn and her husband, Ed going to visit Ed's Aunt Vesta in the Rose Hills Nursing Home. (One minor change in the novel it is Ed's mother that is in the nursing home Vesta Adcock is a minor character in the novel, completely unrelated to Evelyn and Ed). The film introduces us to Evelyn and Ninny and we find that Evelyn is, at first, reluctant to listen to this old woman ramble about her past. As the film progresses, the months go on, and the seasons change they go through Halloween, Christmas and Easter their relationship blossoms into a friendship. Evelyn has much to learn from Ninny about life and her place in the world. Evelyn also finds that the story of Idgie and Ruth are a much better reality than the life that she lives, dissatisfied with her husband and herself. The film weaves the two timelines together as Ninny tells the story to Evelyn.
