People in your life can assist you and guide you in many ways. They help you discover things that you have never seen or heard of before. These people are very precious to your life. They love you and care for you. In the novel, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, Santiago is on a quest to discover his Personal Legend and also to find a treasure at the Egyptian Pyramids. While getting closer to his destination, he learns many new things. He learns to read and understand the omens and also to create wind. Many characters help him on his way to pursuing his Personal Legend and treasure. The characters the King of Salem, Fatima, and the Alchemist are the people who help Santiago on his quest.

The King of Salem is one of the characters who help Santiago on his journey. After Santiago leaves the old woman Santiago, "[is] disappointed; he [decides] that he [is] never again going to believe in dreams." (Coelho 17) This is important because Santiago doesn't want to believe in his dreams. This shows that he wants to give up and not continue to find his treasure and his Personal Legend. This all changes when he meets the King of Salem. "The old man related that, the week before, he had been forced to appear before a miner, and had taken the form of a stone." (Coelho 5) This quote is relevant because the story that the King of Salem tells Santiago helps him to get over the idea of giving up. The King of Salem also has another impact on Santiago's journey. The King of Salem tells him, "'It's in Egypt, near the Pyramids.'" (Coelho 1) This shows that the King helped Santiago by telling him where the treasure is. Now that Santiago knows where the treasure is, he knows where to go to make it to his destination faster and easier. Before Santiago finally leaves the King of Salem he says,

"'Take these,' said the old man, holding out a white stone that had been embedded at the centre of the breastplate. 'They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies 'yes' and the white 'no'. When you are unable to read the omens, they help you to do so. Always ask an objective question.'" (Coelho 1-)

This is important because the King of Salem is willing to help Santiago by giving him to read the omens so that he knows what they are trying to tell him. As you can see, the King of Salem really did help Santiago on his quest.

Fatima was also another character who helped Santiago to complete his quest. One way in which she helps him is by encouraging him to complete his journey and find his treasure. When Santiago tells him,

"'That's why I want you to continue toward your goal. If you have to wait until the war is over, then wait. But if you have to go before then, go in pursuit of your dream. The dunes are changed by the wind, but the desert never changes. That's the way it will be with our love for each other.'" (Coelho 8-)

This quote is significant because if Fatima had not encouraged him to go, he probably would have stayed thinking that she was his treasure and Personal Legend. Also, Fatima teaches him about love. She tells him, "'If I am really part of your dream, you'll come back one day.'" (Coelho ) She also tells him,

"I'm a desert woman, and I'm proud of that. I want my husband to wander as free as the wind that shapes the dunes. And, if I have to, I will accept the fact that he has become a part of the clouds, and the animals, and the water of the desert." (Coelho )

These quotes show that Fatima cares deeply about Santiago and wants what is best for him. Once Santiago tells Fatima that he is leaving, she supports his decision. Fatima tells him that, "'My father went away one day, but he returned to my mother, and he has always come back since then.'" (Coelho 14) This quote is significant because it shows that Fatima supports his decision. If she had not supported it then Santiago might have stayed and not completed his Personal Legend and find his treasure. Obviously, you can tell that Fatima influenced Santiago to complete his journey.

Lastly, the Alchemist was another character who helped Santiago on his journey. The Alchemist helps Santiago by giving him advice during the time that he is with him. One night, Santiago and the Alchemist were about to leave, the Alchemist tells Santiago, "'Tomorrow, sell your camel and buy a horse. Camels are traitorous; they walk thousands of paces and never seem to tire. Then suddenly, they kneel and die. But horses tire bit by bit.'" (Coelho 117) This quote is significant because it shows that the Alchemist helps Santiago by giving him advice by telling him to get a horse and to sell his camel. This would help Santiago because the horse would be faster so that he would get to the Pyramids faster. The Alchemist also taught Santiago mysterious and unusual things. "The monk and [Santiago] looked at it, dazzled. The lead had dried into the shape of the pan, but it was no longer lead. It was gold." (Coelho 156) This is important because Santiago got to see how people can change lead in to gold. He also learnt that people can do anything if they try. Santiago got to see how to do exotic and weird things. Event though the Alchemist did not show him how to do it. The Alchemist also helps Santiago in another way. He guides him across the desert. When Santiago finally realizes that he would have to leave Fatima to be on his quest, the Alchemist tells Santiago, "'I'm going to guide you across the desert.'" (Coelho 10) This is important because this is where the Alchemist tells Santiago that he is going to guide him to his treasure. This quote proves that the Alchemist really is going to help Santiago. For the reasons above, the Alchemist was a character who inspired Santiago to finish his quest and Personal Legend.

In the book, The Alchemist, the characters who guide and encourage Santiago are the King of Salem, Fatima, and the Alchemist. These characters help Santiago in many different ways by giving him clues and encouraging him to keep going on his quest. In one's life, people can help you as well. We can depend on those people to guide us because they care and love for us. These people help us to succeed in our life. We should always keep these people in our lives because they are precious and valuable. They help us find our way when we are in trouble.

Initial problem

When the river has an Suspendable Solids (SS) of 5mg/l and alkalinity of 1.5mg/l (expressed as CaCO), 0mg/l of alum was added during the treatment process to make sure that the water passed water standards for the World Health Organisation WHO).

But subsequently the amount of SS was found to have increased to 50mg/l. Logically, when this happens, by doubling the amount of alum added initially, we would be able to generate enough precipitate to filter off the 50mg/l of SS such that the amount of SS left in the solution would be able to pass WHO drinking water standards. This did not happen thus this report is to look into the probable reasons to why the move did not work and the possible solutions to the problem.

Allowable Limits According to the standards of Drinking water from World Health Organization (WHO), the acceptable range of alum dosage is from 5 50mg/l

School papers on Analysis of water treatment problemAssignment

Thus, the 60mg/l of Alum added by the Plant manager has exceeded the acceptable limit.

Analysis

There may be various reasons to why the initial process did not work.

Physical reasons

(Note that we are adding in double the dosage thus the reactors/tanks might not be equipped or designed to take that kind of load)

•The process of mixing alum might not be thorough enough thus the Al(OH) was not precipitated properly

•Not enough time was allowed for precipitation to take place

•The coagulant did not have enough time for it to be saturated with the SS before the coagulant was filtered off.

•As the rate of chemical reaction decreases with decreasing temperature, assume that the temperature near the Hu river does not enhance the rate of reaction thus accounting for the decrease in precipitate formation

Chemical reasons

•There might not be enough alkalinity in the water thus the alum would not be able to precipitate to remove the SS.

•For the water pH between 5 to 8 which we assume to be the optimal pH for which Al(OH) would be precipitated best. When the pH is out of this range the Al(OH) become more soluble(due to the solubility constant) thus less precipitate would be produced and less SS will be removed.

Calculations

Main Equation

= = 0.7

0.7mg/l of alkalinity is needed mg/l of Alum.

Thus for an alum dosage of 0mg/l the alkalinity expressed as mg/l HCO- = (1/16) x 0.7 x 0 = 16.5mg/l

Thus when 50mg/l of Alum is added,

Amount of HCO- needed = 16.5x50/0

= 7.5mg/l

Total amount of CaCO to react with 50mdg/l of Alum= (16/1)x7.5 = 6.5mg/l

There is a deficiency of alkalinity thus explaining why the alum will not react to precipitate thus not removing the level SS to meet WHO standards.

Possible Solutions

1)Add in the extra alkalinity need for 50mg/l of alum to react then remove the hardness and acidity generated

)Add in lime to remove the extra SS needed to attain WHO standards (more popular method as it is less expensive but increases the hardness)

)Add in Soda Ash to remove the extra SS needed to attain WHO standards (does not increase hardness but increases the acidity of the water)

Solution

Prior to the addition of alum, add in excess CaCO into the water to allow the alum to react fully when added.

Total HCO needed to react 60mg/l of alum = 7.5mg/l

Total HCO in the water = 1/100 X 1.5 = 16.47

Note the fact that alum when reacted with Ca(HCO) produces CO gas which becomes HCO- which in turn reacts with the alum.

CO +…HO. HCO- + H+

Initially the HCO- is the limiting agent thus

Amount of CO produced with 1.5m/l of alkalinity in water = (6x44)/(x16)x1.5 = 7.

Amount of alum reacted with 1.5 of alkalinity

= 1.5/0.7 = 18.4 mg/l

Remaining

Alum = 50-18.4 = 1.51mg/l

HCO- generated = (61/44) x 7. = 10.16mg/l

HCO- needed= 7.5-16.47-10.16 =0.87mg/l

In this case as the reactions are reversible, it would be more complicated to add in the solubility constant for the calculations. Thus we estimate that the amount of HCO- needed would be twice to thrice of that needed to fully react with the alum.

Thus HCO- needed = x0.87 = .61mg/l

Amount of CaCO needed to e added in

= (100/1)x.61 = .14mg/l

In the case of hardness, total Ca in the water

= (40/100)x(1.5+.14) = 15.64mg/l.

Conclusion

What is presented is the possible solution to the problems of Hu river. There are other ways of treating the water such as adding in lime or soda ash but in this case alum was used. The important reason to using alum is because it does not increase the hardness of the water and they remove pathogens and particles better than other coagulants. They decrease the alkalinity with the acidic CO gas they produce. Thus they must be added in specific amounts so as to maintain the pH needed to fulfill WHO standards.

Macbeth Essay Is Macbeth A Tragic Hero Or A Tyrant?

Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's most emotive plays, is set in Scotland during the 11th Century and follows the downfall of a man who is led by temptation to mass murder and cruelty. Macbeth, at different stages in the play, demonstrates many of the characteristics of both an evil tyrant and a tragic hero. However, a tragic hero is defined as a great man who falls because of a fatal flaw and Macbeth bests fits this description. Therefore Macbeth fits the role of a tragic hero and not a tyrant.

In Aristotle's "Poeticus", an ancient Greek drama, the definition of a tragic hero includes several criteria. Firstly, the character must be important and his actions must affect many people. Secondly, the character must be good-natured, well known, respected and brave and of good repute. The third criterion is that the character must have one tragic flaw, which leads to his downfall. Last of all, the tragic hero must redeem himself despite his flaw and eventually create sympathy for the character.

Macbeth is presented at the start of the play as a noble man, one full of all the good qualities a man could desire bravery, strength, loyalty, manliness and health. In Act 1 Scene , Macbeth is talked of as a heroic warrior that "brandished steel which smoked with bloody execution". Many other characters in the play also see Macbeth as a honourable man, with the King acknowledging this with comments such as "O valiant cousin, worthy Gentleman". Indeed, if Macbeth did not display these characteristics, then the title of Thane of Cawdor would not have been bestowed upon him in the first place. Already, Macbeth is appearing to fit the criteria for a tragic hero, as he is of good repute and is respected, brave, and honourable. As well, his actions have so far affected many people, as he has saved Scotland from invasion and played a large part in a battle (another criteria of a tragic hero).

Cheap college papers on Macbeth

The other characteristic of a tragic hero is a flaw in the character. In Macbeth's case, it is his unnaturally large sense of ambition and pride, his imagination and insecurity as a man that contributes to his demise. His unnaturally large amount of ambition is even acknowledged by Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 7. "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition which o'erleaps itself and falls on th'other..". This refers to Macbeth's motivation to kill Duncan. Macbeth's ambition is the central driving force for almost all of his actions in the play, and it is the witches who play on this ambition.

Macbeth's insecurity as man is another one of his character faults. Macbeth can "prove" his manliness on the battlefield easily, however Lady Macbeth's knowledge of Macbeth's lack in manliness in other areas allows her to easily manipulate Macbeth to kill the king. In Act 1 Scene 7 after Macbeth makes the tentative decision not to kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth questions Macbeth's manhood by stating, "When you durst do it, then you were a man". Lady Macbeth also offers another taunt in Act Scene 4 after Macbeth's 'sight' of Banquo's ghost by asking "Are you a man?" to call for Macbeth's regain in composure. This insecurity in his manhood is played upon by Lady Macbeth and others in such a way that leads Macbeth to commit dreadful deeds.

Macbeth's last character fault is his imagination. This flaw grows in size as the play progresses. At first regarding the witches prophecies, his imagination allows him to contemplate killing the king. Then as his imagination grows more fanciful he begins seeing ghosts. This delusional behaviour is a manifestation of Macbeth's imagination in real life. As a result of all these character flaws, Macbeth is driven on to murder increasingly until he realises that to turn back would be just as hard as to keep going.

Even though now, Macbeth fits some of the criteria as an evil tyrant someone who is merciless, has a lack of compassion for others, is generally disliked, and kills for his own personal gain; it is important to note that Macbeth did not start out as evil. He was once a "worthy gentleman". Even when Macbeth is at the epitome of his evil, he still has a sense of compassion in which he demonstrates when Lady Macbeth kills herself. Here, he broods on life's futility, clearly in a weak show of grief; "out, out brief candle, life's but a walking shadow". Another sign that Macbeth has not turned into an evil tyrant is his willingness to show mercy.

Before Macbeth kills Duncan, Lady Macbeth attacks Macbeth and convinces him to eliminate Duncan. However Macbeth shows reluctance to be disloyal to his king and tells his wife that he "..will proceed no further in this business.." as he has "golden opinions from all sorts of people..". In this case, Macbeth shows mercy and proves that he has a conscience and is not purely evil.

According to Aristotle, a tragic hero must also evoke pity and sympathy from the audience. From the moment that Macbeth decides to live a lie in Act 1 Scene 7 "False face must hide what false heart doth know," the audience knows that he has condemned himself. They know that all the things he thought of in the soliloquy earlier in the same scene (Act 1 Scene 7, L1-8) will come true that the killer is damned for eternity and that the killer will be killed. The audience immediately feels a pang of pity for the once valiant man now so obviously on a trail to self-destruction. From here, Macbeth digs his own pit and his thoughts do come true, with Lady Macbeth committing suicide and rendering Macbeth loveless and the arrival of Macduff and the English army to overthrow Macbeth.

When Macduff does arrive and threatens the "hell hound" that he will be exhibited in captivity if he will not fight, Macbeth chooses death, as he could not bear to be subservient to Malcolm and be exhibited like a caged animal. Macbeth's choice of death over capture gives him back some of his earlier stature and the audience's pity and sympathy for the once great man rises to a climax. This ability to induce pity and sympathy in the audience is the last ingredient of the 'tragic hero formula'. Its presence proves Macbeth is not simply a tyrant.

In conclusion, Shakespeare's character Macbeth is a perfect tragic hero, not a tyrant. Macbeth was once a great man of high distinction whom, because of his fatal flaws of ambition, insecurity and imagination commits the most heinous of sins and unwittingly brings about his own downfall with the effect of creating sympathy and pity from the viewers. Macbeth moves from a loyal heroic warrior, to 'hell hound' to one who regains some of his earlier nobility and dignity before he dies. These factors combine to produce a masterfully crafted tragic hero who is far more then a simple tyrant.

Dress Codes in Public Schools

The clothing students choose to wear has become dangerous. Dress codes in public schools have been proposed and some have in forced it to protect students from situations of losing their lives over an expensive pair of sneakers. That is why all public schools should make dress codes mandatory. Dress codes also help parents who do not have enough money to buy their children expensive clothing. They give children some options in their uniforms and allow them some choices with the style of their outfits. . Students can purchase their own clothing per standards, at any clothing store. Dress codes should be in forced in every public school.

Dress codes in public schools allow all students to be similar, at least with clothing. Children are so different with race, social class, and their own personal style, that it promotes children to be equal. Schools who have dress codes have less crime with in their school, and less reason for children to make fun of other children who cannot afford nice clothing. Making dress codes mandatory can eliminate most problems schools have with clothing. Uniforms promote an equality in all students, whether you are popular or not (LaPoint PG).

Uniforms not only help students become more equal, but they also help parents finically. Uniforms are a better system for parents who cannot afford nice clothing for their children. They reduce the money students and parents spend on clothing (LaPoint PG). Students will not have to pressure their parents for the latest styles to fit in, which cost a small fortune. Parents will not have to feel guilty or ashamed because they cannot afford the clothes. Students will not have to worry about their new pair of sneakers getting stolen from them. And parents then will not have to spend more money to replace them.

Dress codes in public schools are not just about money, but are a sense of togetherness as one, with out compromising our individuality. Although I fully support dress codes, I also agree with the opposition on the issue. If the dress codes are too strict, students may not be able to express their own individuality (LaPoint PG). I do not think we should make dress codes so strict that students' would have to purchase their uniforms from the school. Children should be given the option to buy clothes privately, to fit a standard. Students' clothes with in that standard can express themselves through their hairstyles, different colors of bottoms, and accessories. This makes the students safe with out sacrificing individuality.

Students will still be able to express themselves, but they will just have to it with in a guideline. Certain right's groups seek to protect the right's of the students' to be able to look as they desire (LaPoint PG). Students' safety today has become more important than students' right's to the latest designer outfit. I cannot understand why a parent would oppose their child wearing an outfit that could help with their child's safety. Have we not gone too far with the right's we have. I am all for our constitutional right's, but not when it comes with a price tag. I believe there comes a point when our right's need to be a bit adjusted to fit the society we live in today. If it is unsafe for our children to go to school with nice clothing or shoes, we have a problem. Children's rights are sacrificed all the time. The freedom of speech is not always applied with an upset parent. The dress code I support, allows children to wear clothing that is similar but allows some of your own expression. Children can wear dress casual pants, shorts, and skirts, in different colors. White-collar shirts do not have to be golf shirts. The fashion industry offers a wide variety for all shapes and styles, to all different types of clothes. I just do not think children's rights are sacrificed anymore than they are in their own home. As a parent your role is to protect your child. Not to make sure they look cute or trendy for their next day at school. Students can exercise their right to express themselves when they become an adult.

Dress codes in public schools help students focus more on school and less on appearance. This may help the child to develop the mind more and the ego less. Uniforms are a safe way to make students more similar with less conflict. This benefits the parents and students because they are spending less money on school clothes. Students' rights are also not tremendously altered. I would rather sacrifice students' rights than see a child be seriously hurt for a pair of sneakers. Uniforms give students a sense of security, and allow them to feel they belong. I did not have to wear uniforms to school. But if I did, I would not have had to worry about what to wear everyday. I would not have to get dressed up for the captain of the football team. And I am sure I could of found ways to express my individuality with my clothes after school, or on the weekends.
