It's Thanksgiving morning at about 7 o'clock and I am wide-awake. That night all I could think about was my last game as a senior at Andover High School. I tried to eat that morning but I couldn't and all I could see was the Eagle Tribune saying how the Warriors were 1-point underdogs against Central Catholic. All I could think about was how I would walk off that football field at the end of the game and wondering how I would be feeling. Wondering if I would be able to enjoy my Thanksgiving Day dinner at the end of the day. Wondering if this would be my last football game ever in my life. Next thing I can remember was the referee's calling over our captains for the coin toss. We won the toss and we elected to receive the opening kick-off. Central decided to pick the side with the wind to help them kick the ball. All I can remember was the first play of the game, watching the ball leave the kickers foot and spin in the air to our deep man's hands. I can picture it now as if I was watching right now how I ran straight down the middle of the field into the end zone. With that first play of the game, the Andover Warriors go up 6 to 0 and from that point on all I can remember is that everyone on our team played their there heart's out. Every down of every series you could see our players give it their all and execute every play as it was drawn up. Everyone just seemed to be clicking right in sink and it was like watching a masterpiece being created.

That day, the Warriors walked away from that field feeling great about themselves in every possible way. There were no regrets that game because we all knew we left everything out on that field and the score showed that. We entered that field as underdogs and walked away as the top dogs with the score being 4-1. Min-zhan Lu was also another writer that wrote about her struggle with literacy. Hers was different though, she had to fight to be literate in two different languages. As politically informed as I would've thought myself to be, I had no idea about the struggle over the Tropicana Shopping Center. I don't really have any excuse for that except that I don't shop there, and I really don't think I'll miss it if it vanishes. Since it's only about ten minutes away, I figured talking to these people like some sort of investigative reporter would not only be enlightening, but enjoyable as well. So I headed out for the Tropicana.

I didn't have to work around minutia to get to a pretty clear message. The Mexican community backs the people who own "La Tropicana" as well as those who shop and work there. There's not a lot of affection for the San Jose redevelopment agency and the Blake Hunt company, in fact most people feel that there'll be some hostility felt toward the duo if they succeed. Most of the merchants and shoppers feel that the city needs to give the Tropicana the assistance to modernize the shopping center because Tropicana has worked hard to establish their market share and customer loyalty. The Tropicana is seen as the "heart" of the Mexican Community and most of them cite the plan of redevelopment that was instituted in 17 that was supposedly expected to lean toward owners, merchants, and minorities within East San Jose. I heard the words "Corporate Pirates" when describing Blake Hunt from Manuel Monares, a man who's shopped at the Tropicana for years. Some merchants accused city council members of profiting from the overthrow of the Tropicana ownership personally as well as politically. This is basically an attack upon a minority controlled shopping center, a minority economy and East San Jose on the whole. The City heralds themselves as the champions of eminent domain and blight, but it is merely a way to establish a higher class of citizens that will contribute a higher amount of tax dollars according to Hugo Flores, a man who works at Credit Jewelers. Soon I began to recognize that this Tropicana issue is a symptom of a bigger problem.

The Latino working class doesn't have affordable housing in San Jose, nor does anyone else for that matter. Moreover, who's to say what belongs in this city and what doesn't? These people's homes and livelihoods may be perfectly acceptable to them, and just because it doesn't fit within the cookie cutter framework that the council has in mind doesn't mean it should be absolved. This community, these diverse people are part of a divergence from the norm that makes this community vibrant and rewarding. If that sounds idealistic or utopian, I don't apologize. The city is doing an amputation of culture and replacing it with a prosthetic; a homogeneous corporation that annihilates small business and democratic choice. Many have said they'll boycott the new center, and in my opinion they should.

Well, if one attended a city council meeting last year they would have found a disgusting display. I learned that the only reason that another vote occurred was because some city council members had apparently discussed previously how they would vote privately before they did so publicly. The city's offering $1.6 million for the property and they want to give it to Walnut Creek's Blake Hunt. They voted nine to two and a lot of people came and protested, and in examining the three hour session it is apparent that the city council wasn't too swayed by testimony.

Another issue is what the owners and members of the community feel is just compensation in that the area is not only losing trusted and valued shops, they are also losing an established Latino cultural icon. The issue has become hotly contested as the Blake Hunt development corporation is from an outside city, Walnut Creek, so the local economy won't even reap tax dollars from the corporation's private holdings. Additionally, the Blake Hunt corporation is white owned and operated, and the Hispanic community feels that the Redevelopment Agency is seeking to racially dilute the area and "whiten" it up. Mayor Ron Gonzales has commented on such a prospect as ludicrous, but one has to wonder what exactly the city's motivations are.

One has to consider that the United States Constitution does not support taking private property from one owner so that it will ultimately benefit another private owner. I heard a man say that the financial interests of a few people were superceding the interests of the entire city. I seemed to concur and it looked as if this issue was to be tied up in court for quite a while. It's remarkable how interested I am now in a subject that I knew little about. Hopefully it turns out best for those who need it to most-- the community in East San Jose. It makes a lot more sense for the citizens of the community to vote on the matter rather than the few who stand to benefit, but again, I suppose I sound too idealistic and I should realize that we live in a representative democracy. However, I feel that the constitution should be upheld as the supreme law of the land, regardless of city council aspirations. Time will tell if the tussle over the Tropicana adheres to the constitution and ultimately the community's wishes.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, â€The Yellow Wallpaper”, is written from a feminist point of view. The story is centered around the protagonist, a woman who suffers from a mental depression following the birth of her baby. Her husband John, a physician, believes she needs to be kept in solitary confinement to ensure her the best recovery. However, being completely isolated and secluded in an upstairs room, ultimately leads to her downfall at the end of the story. What is isolation? Isolation is described as being alone, separated from social contact - perhaps in this case a misguided, inappropriate recovery (due to the time era). Isolation is effectively illustrated in this story through plot, setting, and characterization.

The plot begins in a time era, the 1800’s, when women were considered inferior to men, maybe a contributing factor opposing the woman in the story. We are introduced to a woman who suffers from a mental depression. Her husband John’s profession, being a physician, is to treat illnesses, and he does, in fact, diagnose her with an extreme mental depression. Yet, his treatment for her is â€perhaps the one reason she does not get well faster.” (Gilman, p.46) He does not believe she is sick, but he does believe isolation is the proper treatment. Men in this era were dominant, and women were considered misguided with unacceptable ideas. John sees his wife as a mindless being; however, the reader knows this is not true. John treats his wife as an ordinary, regular patient, rather than someone who is also his significant other. The protagonist suffers from depression, but she is still able to comprehend the things around her. She engages in many requests to enliven her surroundings, but time and time again she is declined by her husband. â€I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs that opened onto the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! But John would not hear of it.” (Gilman, p.47) The treatment prescribed to his wife is from the beliefs of Weir Mitchell. The rest cure - used to calm one down. John’s wife is to remain in a completely relaxed state, refraining from any outside stimulus, perhaps ultimately resulting in an opposite effect. She is so alone, craving interaction with others, that she seeks out companionship from an illusion of a woman in the wallpaper in her room. She even becomes protective of this woman when she catches John and his sister looking at the wallpaper. Afraid that John and Jennie might take away her only friend, she convinces herself that no one will discover this woman, â€but I know she was studying that pattern, and I am determined that nobody shall find it out but myself!” (Gilman, p.54) She feels akin to this woman, who is also trapped, just like herself. Perhaps this illusion is her parallel.

To better understand the imprisonment the protagonist feels, Gilman makes effective descriptions about the setting. â€A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house”, (Gilman, p.446) leaves feelings of loneliness and desolation. To ensure complete isolation of his wife, John keeps her prisoner in a place that is three miles away from town. She is also kept upstairs. All of her days are spent alone in a stark, barren room. Along with â€the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs”, (Gilman, p.48) John nails his wife’s bed to the floor. This does not seem like the appropriate atmosphere one should endure to overcome severe depression. Family members are even forbidden to visit. What else, other than family, would seem better suited to lift one’s spirits? And finally, she is forbidden to write, the one thing left to keep her well-grounded and at peace with herself. To overcome depression, one would think that the opposite of isolation would make promise of a start to recovery - friends, family, outside stimuli, and positive influences would make one want to get better. These descriptions about setting help emphasize the isolation that John’s wife experiences.

The aspect of the story that is most intriguing is the conflict between the two main characters. Despite the fact that they are married, John is the result of the isolation that his wife undergoes. Due to the era of the story, John is a dominating male, one who is labeled with power and superiority. He is a physician with the knowledge and stature of high-class. He is a man that is above and beyond the general public, and most definitely his wife. His wife is only a poor, misguided woman, incapable of making decisions and expressing her own feelings. She is a mindless human being. But is she really? John’s wife bows down to his wishes and is perceived as not having acceptable ideas of her own recovery. But are her ideas really unacceptable? The supposed different level of character creates a sense of isolation and segregation. Had John been on the same level as his wife, he might have been more sympathetic to her and made the proper adjustments better suited to a quick and promising recovery. However, having created an isolated environment for her to live in, only increased the level of isolation for his wife and made their relationship even more distant.

Ultimately, it is the isolation brought upon by John, that brings about his wife’s downfall. We, the readers, know that she was not a mindless human being. With proper care and attention, she may have recovered from her depression, which, however, eventually lead to insanity. Being shut out from society, locked up, and refused to express feelings and ideas would make almost anyone go crazy.
