Everyone has at least one experience in their lifetime that changes their outlook on life, their appreciation for what they have, and them as a whole. For me, that experience occurred last Christmas when my family and I visited Hale House. Hale House, which was established by Mother Hale in 17, is a non-profit organization that helps children whose mothers cannot care for them. I had read about Hale House on the internet in November and I decided to tell my parents about it and suggested that we take a trip there when it got closer to the holiday season. From the beginning of November to the middle of December we collected toys, books, food, clothing, games, and many other things to give to the children when we went. Our living room was filled with bags upon bags of gifts for the children we would soon visit. On December 15th we loaded up the car and drove into the city. That day changed my life forever and no matter what, I know that I will never forget it. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see and what I was about to live that day. Visiting Hale House demonstrated character, service, and leadership. But most importantly, it gave me a new appreciation for life.

One quality that I demonstrated by going to Hale House was character. Character is who you are as a person, your values, and what is important to you. I feel that going to Hale House enriched my character very much. It made it easier for me to relate to people and for me to interact and be with children. These children had been through so many hard times in their lives yet they were completely open to the idea of spending the day with a complete stranger. Being with these children for the day made me see that even though they had so little, they still had such an appreciation for us being there and for all the small things in life. I feel that it made me more well rounded as a person and that it taught me kindness and compassion. Most importantly, it showed me that despite what I may believe there is a world outside of my mine and that not everyone is as fortunate as I am. Hail House bettered my character and taught me things that I thought I would never learn.

Another quality that was demonstrated through this event was service. When you provide a service to someone you are doing something that helps others. Going to Hale House was a service because I helped those in need and those less fortunate. I was able to make them smile and bring joy into those children's lives. I did something to benefit others and I saw that giving is so much better than getting. Sometimes you give and what you get out of it is so much better than you could have ever imagined it to be. I learned that when you give with an open heart the rewards are amazing. I provided a service to the children and I helped those in need.

The last quality that I demonstrated through this experience was leadership. Leadership is taking initiative, doing something positive, organizing an event, and motivating others. I did all of these things through Hale House. I organized the trip that my family would take and I found the organization we would visit. I took the initiative and motivated everyone in my family to go and to collect things to bring with us. Going there also helped motivate the children and bring some happiness to them. I took on the role of leadership by organizing, motivating, and helping others.

Visiting Hale House was a life changing experience for me. I was doing something for the benefit of others and at the same time I was learning things that only that experience could have taught me. That day at Hale House taught me kindness, compassion, and respect. I demonstrated character, service, and leadership in the process. I was given an entirely new appreciation for life and I stopped taking the little things for granted. It made me believe that the only way to truly help oneself is to help others.

The Most Important Things in Life "Are friends. Best Friends."

College Essays on Fried Green Tomatoes

One of the main reasons that the novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caf, by Fannie Flagg, has been one of my favorites is the underlying theme of the importance of friendship. In addition, the novel is written in such a different manner than other novels, with a wonderful sense of humor and excellent writing. The dialogue between Evelyn and Ninny is so easy and natural, that reading it is just like hearing Ninny converse with Evelyn. It is almost as if you are sitting in the visiting room of the Rose Terrace Nursing home, eavesdropping on a conversation.

Friendship crosses boundaries of age, race and personality. I have always felt that friendship is one of the most important things in the world. The friendships that are found in the novel, as well as the movie are unique and special in their own way. In addition to the theme of the importance of friendship is the idea of family. Family, is not limited to blood relation. The novel uses third person in telling the story of Evelyn and Ninny Threadgoode at the Rose Terrace Nursing Home in the late 180s and flashbacks in the form of "The Weems Weekly" (Whistle Stop, Alabama's Weekly Bulletin) and other "bulletin" type writing.

The point of view of the novel and the film are somewhat similar. The novel is told in third person narratives, flashbacks and jumps from the 180s with Evelyn Bates and Ninny Threadgoode telling the story of Ruth Jamison and Idgie Threadgoode in the 10s through the 160s. Evelyn is a woman dealing with finding her place in the world; she is unhappy with her marriage and is going through menopause. Evelyn and Ninny develop an unlikely friendship, since Ninny is an eighty-six year old woman in a nursing home, not the usual candidate for friendship for a woman in her fifties. The film is told with a rd person omniscient point of view, telling the story of Evelyn and Ninny. The flashbacks are told in the rd person point of view with Ninny being the narrator and knowing everything about Idgie and Ruth and their story. The film takes all the flashbacks and stories revolving around Whistle Stop, the Threadgoode's and Ruth and consolidates them into the memory of Ninny Threadgoode as she is telling them to Evelyn in her visits to the nursing home. The film really simplifies the book, and I feel that it takes something away from the uniqueness of the book. Upon watching the film again, I found that the film still provides an accurate representation of the theme and meaning of the book.

The plot of the novel and the film is fairly in sync. The novel goes into so much detail about the events surrounding Whistle Stop and goes into extensive detail about the family of the Threadgoode's and the family of Sipsey, Big George and even the homeless character Smokey. In the novel, these stories add validity to the stories that Ninny tells Evelyn. In addition, Ninny isn't as "all-knowing" about the incidents in Whistle Stop as she is in the movie. Since the author of the book, also wrote the screenplay, I suppose she did this to make the movie more accessible to the viewer. Including the vast amount of details revolving around Ruth, Idgie, Smokey Lonesome, Sipsey, Big George and their extended families in the film would have been a nearly impossible task and would have made the movie much longer than it's 10 minutes.

The film has two timelines. It opens, we learn, in the 10s or 40s with Frank Bennett's truck being pulled out of the lake and then flashes forward to Evelyn and her husband, Ed going to visit Ed's Aunt Vesta in the Rose Hills Nursing Home. (One minor change in the novel it is Ed's mother that is in the nursing home Vesta Adcock is a minor character in the novel, completely unrelated to Evelyn and Ed). The film introduces us to Evelyn and Ninny and we find that Evelyn is, at first, reluctant to listen to this old woman ramble about her past. As the film progresses, the months go on, and the seasons change they go through Halloween, Christmas and Easter their relationship blossoms into a friendship. Evelyn has much to learn from Ninny about life and her place in the world. Evelyn also finds that the story of Idgie and Ruth are a much better reality than the life that she lives, dissatisfied with her husband and herself. The film weaves the two timelines together as Ninny tells the story to Evelyn.

One Can Enjoy Life with an Atrocious Disease

Finding out you have a potentially life-threatening illness can be the worst news you ever receive, but it doesn't have to be. You can still enjoy your life to the fullest as long as you can maintain a positive attitude. Presently, I can say that while living with a horrible disease I am enjoying life for what it's worth and then some. I have been fortunate enough to become the mother of three children who are perfectly healthy; an 8-year-old daughter and 11- and 1-year-old boys. I am currently enrolled as a full-time student in a local college and I work full time. In addition to all this, I also have the time- consuming job of a single mother, which we now call parenting. Meanwhile, carrying a full load, I still manage to find time to enjoy life, whether it be traveling, dining out, shopping, or whatever else comes to mind.

When I was 18, I awake one sunny morning and could not get out of bed. Both of my knees were swollen as big as grapefruits. I woke up my boyfriend who was residing with me at the time to let him know that I wasn't able to get out of bed. At that point he dialed 11 to transport me to the nearest hospital, which at that time was University Hospitals of Cleveland. When I finally got there the doctors immediately started an IV, drew blood, and extracted some of the fluid that was around my knees. The doctors came in to talk with me and it was then that I was asked a lot of questions such as- Has this ever happened to me before? I replied, "No this was the first time." The doctor then stated that I would need to be kept for further testing to diagnose what was wrong with me.

The first day, doctors with all different types of specialties where in my room screening me for possibilities of different diseases. Such as oncologists to orthopedists, who really had minimal involvement in my case. The second day a Rheumatologist told me that they found an abnormal amount of an antibody was present in my blood stream. He went on to say that this indicated a possibility that I might have SLE, which is also known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. It is a disease that affects the joints, skin, organs, and connective tissues of the body. It also suppresses the immune system to the point where I could not fight off infection. In my situation it affected my joints and kidneys. There have been days that I've experienced extenuating fatigue that would not allow me to have normal bodily functions. One would have to be a victim of this horrible disease to acknowledge exactly what I am talking about. It is also commonly known as "the wolf", which is where Lupus received its name.

After hospitalization for exacerbation of the Lupus which affected my kidneys, I developed kidney stones as a result of calcium crystallization in my body. The doctors inserted a stent (a tiny tube) in the urethra, which is connected to the kidneys, so they could open the passageway for the stones to pass out of my body. They sent me home with medication to take daily for the rest of my life. I have suffered from this auto-immune disease for a little over 11 years, and I believe it is by the grace of God that I am still a survivor. Although I have to force myself daily to take all that prescribed medication, it gets done.

In spite of the bad days, I continuously find things to keep me going because at any given time that I might actually sit down and think about my situation, I begin to worry and that does not make matters any better at all. This disease is very depressing with of all of its symptoms that range from fatigue to joint pain, but I am living proof that living with this sickness does not have to prevent you from enjoying life to the fullest.

How Do We Calibrate the Geological Time Scale?

In the calibrating of the Geological times scales, two methods are used. One is the measurement of relative time and the other is the radioactive decay of an element. The measurement of relative time is based on the fact that sedimentary rocks are deposited in layers, younger above older, and contain fossils that are of distinctive ages. Whereas radioactive decay is based on the radioactive decay of an element. Because a specific radioactive element decays into a specific stable element at a known rate, both can be used to measure absolute time, the age of objects in years. Then the Geological Time Scale is calibrated.

By determining the relative ages of rocks in one locality or region and then comparing or correlating them with those of other regions, geologists can establish the chronological ordering of geologic events in the Earths history. This is done by studying the formations of rocks, observing the principle of original horizontality (which states that sediments are deposited parallel to the Earths surface), observing to the principle of superposition (which states that each layer is younger than the layer beneath it and older than the one above it), studying the unconformity between the layers of formation (angular, nonconformity, and disconformity) and the principle of cross-cutting relationships (which states that a fault or intrusive body must be younger than the rocks it affects).

Geologists can also tell a great deal about the history of rock formations by observing their unconformity. An unconformity is an erosion surface between layers of markedly different ages. In angular unconformity, the strata rest upon the upturned edges of the strata beneath. In nonconformity, strata rest on eroded metamorphic or igneous rocks. A disconformity is an irregular contact between parallel strata. By observing these and those principles listed above, geologist can determine a lot about earth's history.

Correlation is the process of demonstrating age equivalence. There are three methods of local correlation lateral continuity, physical similarity, and similarity of sequence. Fossils are used to correlate widely separated rocks.

Write a research paper on How Do We Calibrate the Geological Time Scale?

Yet another tool used to correlate fossils and strata is the principle of faunal succession. This principal states that fossil assemblages succeed one another in an orderly fashion. Therefore, matching fossil assemblages can correlate strata of the same relative age.

Superposition and the fossil record form the basis of the relative geologic time scale, the events of the Earths history used in chronological order, Strata from various localities constitute standard sections for given intervals of the relative geologic time scale. Index fossils are useful in correlation because they have narrow ranges wide geographical distributions. The relative time scale is divided into eons, eras, periods, and epochs, order of decreasing magnitude. For example, the Phanerozoic eon is divided into Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras. The Precambrian comprises percent of the geologic time scale.

To determine absolute age, geologists use radioactive atoms that decay at a steady pace over long periods. The process by which unstable atoms emit or capture subatomic particles is called radioactive decay. There are three forms alpha decay, beta decay, a beta (electron) capture.

As a result of radioactive decay, a parent isotope is eventually turned into a stable (non radioactive) daughter product. The age of a sample is determined by the ratio of parent to daughter and by known decay rate. The decay rate is expressed in terms of the half-life of the parent, the time it takes for half (50 percent) of the remaining parent to decay.

The effective time range is the interval over which a radioactive isotope yields useful dates. Some radioactive isotopes used in dating are uranium-5 and uranimum-8, which decays to lead-07 and lead-06, respectively; potassium-40 which decays to argon-40; and rubidium-87, which decays to strontium 87. The 570-year half-life of carbon-14 makes this isotope extremely useful for dating relatively young materials of organic origin. This is how the Geological Time Scale is calibrated.

Killer whales or Orca inhabit all oceans from the tropics to the edge of the polar ice pack. Throughout this vast range, only one species is recognized (Orcinus orca). The largest known concentrations of killer whales are found in the cooler coastal waters of both hemispheres. Norway, Japan, the Antarctic and our Pacific coast have such concentrations.

British Columbia is distinguished by its large populations of killer whales, which are predictably found in sheltered, accessible waters. More than 600 whales inhabit our coastal waters, each identified by unique natural markings. These whales live in at least four communities northern resident, southern resident, transient and offshore.

Northern resident killer whales frequent the Johnstone Strait area off northern Vancouver Island, primarily during the summer and fall. This community consists of more than 00 whales in 16 pods, each typically composed of 5-0 individuals. About 78 orcas in pods form the southern resident community. Individuals remain with or closely associated with their birth group throughout their lives. Transient groups are smaller, ranging from 1-5 individuals. Offshore whales seem to travel in large loosely-associated groups.

The northern resident killer whale population of British Columbia relies on healthy stocks of wild salmon. We urge decision-makers to follow the risk-averse recommendations of the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC) to protect wild salmon in the Broughton Archipelago.
