Assignment #5 Definition

Insomnia

Webster defines insomnia as prolonged and usually abnormal inability to obtain adequate

sleep. For people who suffer from this disorder the definition is vague at best. 10 Million

Americans consult a physician every year for sleep disorders. Another 50 million suffer in

silence. Sometimes, people who have no trouble sleeping, don't understand the problem. Many

health problems cause insomnia, and likewise insomnia can cause many health problems.

Insomniacs have symptoms from the disorder that can be confusing or frustrating to someone

close to them. Insomnia is not just a "nighttime problem," it can affect many aspects of a persons

life. Insomniacs usually tend to be very tired during the day, making it hard to concentrate.

Irritability is a common symptom of lack of sleep also.(So You Wanna 1)

People who suffer from insomnia have trouble falling asleep at night. They wake up in the

middle of the night and can't go back to sleep. Or they wake up to early in the morning. Insomnia

can be very stressful, looking at the clock every hour, watching the hours left to sleep get shorter

and shorter, until they are gone and its time to get up. Unfortunately stress is one of the biggest

causes of acute insomnia. Acute insomnia is short term. It can range from one night to a few

weeks. Other causes of acute insomnia are, illness, injury, change in working hours, and

uncomfortable sleeping conditions. Many people are very sensitive to light conditions, and

temperature when they are trying to sleep.

Chronic insomnia is a much bigger problem, and much harder to treat. Chronic insomnia

is long term it can range from three nights a week for a month, or indefinitely without proper

treatment. Causes of chronic insomnia are depression, long-term stress, or chronic pain. In this

case it is hard to treat the insomnia, because the underlying problem must be treated first. People

who have chronic insomnia, often times have depression, and stress because those symptoms feed

off each other.

Some people who have insomnia may have another sleep disorder that is causing the

problem, such as sleep apnea. Those with sleep apnea "literally stop breathing in their sleep. The

brain receives a signal to arouse the person out of sleep in order to resume breathing.

Consequently sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality."(Get The Facts 1-)

Treatment of insomnia is different case by case. Many acute cases do not require formal

treatment. Simply making a few changes in lifestyle, such as changing sleeping conditions,

waiting out an illness or injury, or getting accustomed to a new schedule. A doctor may prescribe

sleeping pills on a short term basis until the problem is resolved. Chronic insomnia on the other

hand requires treating the underlying condition. A health care provider may recommend

counseling or behavioral therapy to change behaviors that may cause the insomnia. Therapists

may suggest some relaxation exercises, or sleep restriction exercises.

Good sleep habits in general can help make sleep more refreshing and beneficial. Going

to bed at or around the same time every night, and waking at the same time every morning will

establish a good sleep routine, and the body will adjust accordingly. No matter how enjoyable a

nap sounds, try to avoid it. Move more, getting regular exercise will be relaxing, as long as it's

not to close to bed time. Reading a book or taking a bath before bed is very relaxing also. Don't

lay in bed tossing and turning, get up and do something relaxing. Laying in bed will cause more

stress, it's better to try not to think about it. Insomnia is a lonely disorder, because its victims

feel helpless. A lot of times the treatments talked about previously don't always work, and the

person may give up trying.

I myself suffer from chronic insomnia, so I know how it feels. Not getting a good nights

rest, or any rest at all is very hard the next day. When I get home from school or work, the first

thing I want to do is take a nap, because I am exhausted. I know I'm not suppose to take a nap, or

I won't be tired at bedtime. Then I think to myself, I'm never tired at bed time anyway, so if I

take a nap at least I will be able to spend some quality time with my boy friend, when he gets

home. I never can tell what's going to keep me awake. All sleeping conditions have to be perfect.

A ticking clock that I didn't even notice one night will keep me awake the next night. I have been

known to put our clock in the kitchen cupboard in the middle of the night, because just placing it

in another room, I can still hear it a slightly. One night I won't be able to sleep without the fan on,

because it's hot, the next night, the sound of that same fan drives me crazy.

I know that my chronic insomnia is caused by stress. My bouts with insomnia do go away

from time to time. I am a worrier, and always have been, so at least I know how to stop the cycle,

by stopping the stress that's happening at the time. For instance this week, I have four papers due

for school, I started a new job, and my forty five year old aunt (whom I am very close to) is

having brain surgery, how much sleep do you think I will get this week?

Alcohol in College

Alcohol is a huge problem on most college campuses. Twenty one may be the legal drinking age, but some how minors find a way to get a hold of alcohol. People as young as fifteen are able to get their hands on an alcoholic beverage. Alcohol is said to be the chosen drug among college students. College students have a tendency to drink more then the general population. The type of college, geographical location, the ethnic and gender makeup plays a role in the amount of drinking that occurs on campus (Shalala, 1). For example colleges with fraternities and sororities have higher statistics; this is because of their sponsored parties (Shalala, ). They drink more often, which contributes to heavier drinking. Alcohol is known to affect many different types of people; housewives, church members, and successful business owners. But college students seem to be especially affected by alcohol (Encarta, 1). There are many different steps that are being taken to diffuse the drinking on college campuses. Colleges are starting programs for alcoholic students, establishing rules and moral codes on campus, and even banishing alcoholic advertisements on campus.

Studies show that college students drink more when they are in a group, which speaks on peer influences. When it comes to drinking on campus there is no legal age so to speak. When someone goes to a party they dont get carded, they get a cup. Studies show that students between the ages of 18-1 drink more then those that are over 1 (Shalala, ). Forty one percent of college students report to binge drinking, and nearly four percent drink daily (Shalala, ). Binge drinking is defined as four drinks for a woman in one sitting, and five drinks for a male in one sitting. Students that binge drinker have even more problems then students who dont. Binge drinkers are more likely to have hangovers and engage themselves in unplanned sexual activity (Shalala, ). Alcohol, in small amounts, may relieve tension, fatigue, or produce an affect that numbs pain (Encarta, ). There are endless consequences that come with drinking. A range of problems occur due to alcohol consumption. If large amounts of alcohol are consumed, complete loss of physical control may follow, ending in stupor, possibly even in death (Encarta, ). The most popular problem that occurs with drinking is academic problems; others include things such as trauma, date rape, recklessness, vandalism and pregnancy in women. There are many organizations that are trying to reduce these terrible statistics. Two for instance are MADD and SADD. These organizations help to raise awareness about alcohol and all its dangers. Some organizations, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, help alcoholics recover with long-term group therapy, in some cases-even hospitalization (Encarta, 6). Recovery may even involve individual counseling (Encarta, 6). Most treatment programs used for long term periods are effective, but are less successful in shorter sessions (Encarta, 6). Colleges have even devised plans to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed on their campuses. A college should provide students with alternate activities, in order to prevent then from drinking. Campus facilities should remain open, and colleges should expand their recreational activities on nights and weekends. Many colleges have strict rules and regulation concerning alcohol. Here are some more ways that colleges are trying to prevent and reduce alcohol problems. First, they enforce their rules and regulations. Failure to abide by these rules will result in a fine, probation, community service, or even suspension in the severe cases. Secondly, they reduce availability by banning beer, and parties on campus. Thirdly, colleges have been banning advertising alcoholic beverages in school newspapers and throughout the campus.

Most colleges feel that advertisement has a big influence on students. It not only puts the idea in their head, but it also advertises cheap beer. If students know that a certain beer is cheap that will give then an incentive to go out and buy the beer. Another way that colleges are trying to reduce the alcohol consumption is buy counseling. Buy constantly reinforcing the dangers of drinking, colleges hope that students will listen and stop drinking. I decided to interview one of my old teachers, in order to get her opinion about alcohol on college campuses. She has a son that is presently looking for a college. I was curious to see how she felt about sending her son away to a college, with all the talk about alcohol on campuses. After talking with my teacher I realized that every parent is worried about the amount of alcohol on college campuses.

She said that she was very nervous and worried about the amount of alcohol on college campuses. She also said that she feels confident that her son will make responsible decisions while in college. Parents often talk to their children about drugs and alcohol, and my professor has already had a discussion with her so. I feel that parents do have their childs best interest in mind. Parents are not dumb they know what goes on at college. Most parents are prepared for the stories and the talks. My feelings on drinking have greatly changed after attending college. In high school, I used to party all the time. The parties in high school were nothing like the ones at college. Now I know why everyone says that you havent been to a party, until youve been to a college party. I never witnessed binge drinking until I came to college. I have no problem with partying. Sure I like to drink, once in a while, but not everyday. Here on campus the parties start on Wednesday, and go until Saturday. Even before Wednesday people are talking about drinking and which house is having the party.

I feel that drinking in college get extremely out of control. In the semesters that I have been here, I have heard, and saw some scary things. One girl in a class of mine almost got raped because a guy was too drunk. Another girl at my school lost her virginity to a guy she didnt know, because they were both so hammered. Alcohol is not only a dangerous drug, but it also can make or break you. The girl that lost her virginity now has a horrible reputation and no one wants to be seen with her. I know so many people that have messed around with guys because they were drunk. I dont know about you but I dont think I could mess around with someone that I dont know, and on top of that hardly remember what happened. Alcohol is an extremely addictive and dangerous. There are some many college students that have either ruined their reputation or gotten kicked out of their school because of alcohol. Honestly, does stumbling, vomiting, and basically looking like a fool sound fun? I dont think so. Perhaps someday public health organizations will enable society to identify the early signs of drinking habits and help people to over come their alcoholism before their condition worsens (Encarta, 7). If you are going to drink, at least have control, drink in moderation and be careful. I know that when I drink I never leave my friends, nor do I drink too much, because I have people that watch out for me. Getting drunk doesnt need to be a rite of passage, and hangovers arent a prerequisite for graduation (Shalala, 1).

It's Thanksgiving morning at about 7 o'clock and I am wide-awake. That night all I could think about was my last game as a senior at Andover High School. I tried to eat that morning but I couldn't and all I could see was the Eagle Tribune saying how the Warriors were 1-point underdogs against Central Catholic. All I could think about was how I would walk off that football field at the end of the game and wondering how I would be feeling. Wondering if I would be able to enjoy my Thanksgiving Day dinner at the end of the day. Wondering if this would be my last football game ever in my life. I am up in my room making sure I got all my clothes and equipment in my bag. It's 70 now and I am I walking out the door to which could be the beginning of the worst or best day of my life.

As I drive up to the school, I can see a couple of my teammates getting out of their car and walking inside to the locker room. I'm wondering if the same thing going through my head is going through theirs. I get out of my car and start walking towards the field house. I look to the side of the big Blue door and I see the sign that the school put up because of us football players. "Don't wear cleats inside field house", and I can remember when it first went up and how many times I disobeyed that sign. I stood there looking at the sign and chuckled to myself and thinking about the past years of football that I have played at this school. I walked into the field house, all the lights are off and all I can see is the light coming from the hall leading to my locker room. It seems like a long walk and I knew inside it was my last one from here to there to go get ready for a football game. I started walking to my locker room to go get ready for my last game against archrival Central Catholic.

As I walked towards the varsity locker room I could see the gym lockers on my right and the showers to my left. I walked up to my coach's office on my right and peaked in to say hi and I could see all the coaches making final changes to the defensive schemes and the offensive strategies. As I stood their talking to my head coach, a couple of senior football players walked by me trying to pump themselves up for the game. I stood their thinking about how they would play their last game as a senior and wondering if they were willing to go all out for the win. I head towards the varsity locker room door and I can see the picture of our emblem right above the door. It was a picture of a Bald Eagle standing with his chin held up high and his chest made known to those who stared upon him. I reached up high and tapped the sign for good luck. I start to open the locker room door and I knew from here on its time to play some football and give it my all.

I walk into the locker room and I can see all my teammates getting their uniform all ready. Everyone was standing in front of their locker either listening to the compact disc player or talking to themselves- it was as if everyone was in their own little world trying to pump themselves up for their last game of their high school career. I walked over to my locker and looked up and saw my nametag from football camp. I started to think about how this season started- from the first day of camp till the next 11 weeks in till my last game. I opened my locker and reached up and grabbed my cd player. I start listening to my football mix that I made at the beginning of the season to start to pump my self up. I remember the first song that played was Ozzy Ozbourne's "Crazy Train". This song always gets me in the mood to play football whether it's a practice, a scrimmage or a game, I always get in the state of mind that I need to be.

I reach into my bag and pull out my gold spandex football pants and my white game jersey. I start to put my pads into my girdle and into my game pants. After I get all my pads all set to the side and ready to put on, I start to get myself ready to play some football. I take off my clothes and put on my spandex short, pulled up my navy football socks and started to strap up my knee brace. I put on my girdle and tied it up and made sure everything was in and secure. I slid up my pants, tied the strings and tightened my belt. I knew I was ready to go out and play some football. I through on my cold weather under armor shirt and put on my old lucky cut up shirt over and headed out to the field house with my helmet, water and cleats in one hand and my jersey and shoulder pads in the other. I walked into the field house and sat down against the wall to listen to what my coach had to say about the offensive and defensive strategies and his last minute changes. As I sat there listening to the coach, I started to put on my cleats and strapped them up nice and tight and I started to do a light stretching while drinking my water. Before I knew it I was loading onto the bus to head on over to the Lawrence High School's stadium to play our archrival Central Catholic.

When I was getting off the bus I could look over to the football field and see all the red jerseys warming for the game. Our special teams walked over to the field to gain our side of the field to warm up. We were out their for about 0 minutes before I saw the line of white and gold jerseys leading from the locker room to the field and from that point on I new everyone came to play. Our whole team was out on the field in our lines for stretching and everyone was counting in sink with one another nice and loud. You could hear us throughout the whole stadium and it sounded great. When we were done stretching, everyone ran to their pre-game groups and started to warm up for the start of the game. Our pre-game offense was executing the plays with excellence and the defense was running through the blitz schemes perfect. We looked like we had come to play that day and it felt great to. Everyone knew it was going to be a good game because you could look into everyone's eyes see the gleam of happiness running through their veins.

Next thing I can remember was the referee's calling over our captains for the coin toss. We won the toss and we elected to receive the opening kick-off. Central decided to pick the side with the wind to help them kick the ball. All I can remember was the first play of the game, watching the ball leave the kickers foot and spin in the air to our deep man's hands. I can picture it now as if I was watching right now how I ran straight down the middle of the field into the end zone. With that first play of the game, the Andover Warriors go up 6 to 0 and from that point on all I can remember is that everyone on our team played their there heart's out. Every down of every series you could see our players give it their all and execute every play as it was drawn up. Everyone just seemed to be clicking right in sink and it was like watching a masterpiece being created.

That day, the Warriors walked away from that field feeling great about themselves in every possible way. There were no regrets that game because we all knew we left everything out on that field and the score showed that. We entered that field as underdogs and walked away as the top dogs with the score being 4-1. That night I enjoyed every second of my Thanksgiving Day meal and it was by far the best feeling that I have ever felt.

Literacy

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on literacy. Let's face it, writing is writing and reading is reading to most people. To some people writing and reading are boring, just something they have to do. To those people I say read and write. In this paper I will let you know what effects this will have on your life. Literacy is a growing process, as we are. It starts out confusing and strange and then it eventually develops into interesting and fun.

Remember way back to when you were little, you would say any word that you could think of. If it didn't make sense, who cared at least you were learning new words. This started you learning literacy. You were compiling new phrases and sentences before you even knew what "phrases" and "sentences" meant. Remember how it felt when your parents would praise you for just saying a word correct. As you finish reading this paper, keep that one feeling in mind and never let it go.

As you moved through the years, literacy didn't get any easier. You went from reading tiny books to these big books that looked like the pages would never end. Wasn't that a great moment, finally being able to read the things that big kids read. But the thing you couldn't understand is why you were reading these books. "Entrances to our future," as one of my teachers would say. These books eventually helped us to get ideas and examples which would soon help our writing.

"Real" writing really doesn't begin until we got to be teenagers. What I mean by "real" writing is; writing that gets us into all the funny details of literacy. You know those strange funny details that you never had to worry about in elementary school. Those things that took extra time to think about, but really had a big effect on your paper. Teachers would always mark in extra commas or semi colons when you used them wrong or even forgot one. From here you would elaborate sentences, make them the strongest sentences in the world. They could stand up to anything, even that red pen. You were not afraid to say what was written on the page of that good book. The only trick was to emphasize what you were saying.

As you got older, of course the writings became tougher. Things would seem to repeat themselves over and over. No matter what you did you could never get literacy right. Your papers now seemed to have more depth. You knew how to write and what to write, but the hard part was separating when to do which. You could obviously see that you were better at writing now. Your papers were not only full of information from pages of a book, now they were full of thoughts from your mind. You would think of new and extraordinary things that would just seem to fit right together. You even used your past as examples in you papers. The writing would never stop.

Through these times of learning your literacy got stronger. What was scary and tough about literacy was now easy. You grew as a person and your literacy rate sky- rocketed. You learned to appreciate what all those writers were talking about in the past and you appreciated your writing more. Literacy is not a process that comes to you over night; you have to work hard and try to succeed in it. You learned this just like all the great writers in the past have, by practice.

Malcolm X found out how tough literacy was in jail. He taught himself everything he knew about literacy. Everything from the small details that made no sense to the big complex words that no one else knew. The most amazing part was that he did this when he was in his twenties in jail. He didn't have anyone to praise him for using new words or figuring out new sentences. It was him alone in his cell that made him interested in literacy. His hope that one day he would be able to go about and understand what other people where trying to say that he never understood before. All he needed was one person to believe in him and that was himself. Having people believe in you is sometimes the key to a healthy literacy, as Mike Rose found out.

Mike Rose knew he was special. Rose was gifted in a way that we all would love to have been granted. He could write and write well. He didn't realize his gift though, until high school. That is, when a teacher pointed out that he could do it. This teacher, Jack McFarland, got Rose to read. Not just read, but really read and understand what he was reading. This teacher also got his creativity wheels going and got Rose to write like he has never written before. That is in a way that Rose would have confidence in what he was doing and saying. Mr. McFarland gave Rose one of the greatest gifts possible, the gift of belief. His belief in Rose helped him succeed in his writings.

Min-zhan Lu was also another writer that wrote about her struggle with literacy. Hers was different though, she had to fight to be literate in two different languages. "I made sentences…with both English lyric and the classic Chinese lyric…" (Lu, 5) Her school was one part of her life, which means one teaching of literacy. While her home was the other part that had a whole different set of rules regarding literacy. Lu learned to

work out her conflict with the intermingling languages, as she became successful in both languages. Lu considered each language a new adventure that she had to go on everyday. She was lucky to be able to share both forms of literacy.

Malcolm X, Mike Rose, and Min-zhan Lu were just three of many examples of people who were brought up with different views on writing and literacy. The literacy process grew with them as they got more into their writing. This strange and confusing process that is so hard shaped their lives. Helped them live through writing and guided them to the right answers. They showed us that literacy is not as tough as it looks. When you think its tough take a deeper look at your paper that is where the answer will be.

Please note that this sample paper on literacy is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on literacy, we are here to assist you. As politically informed as I would've thought myself to be, I had no idea about the struggle over the Tropicana Shopping Center. I don't really have any excuse for that except that I don't shop there, and I really don't think I'll miss it if it vanishes. But I do have compassion for the people that do rely on the shopping center at King & Story, as it's a forum for their needs in addition to being a staple of their culture. I felt before I became sympathetic to the city or jaded by politicians at the city council meeting, it was necessary for me to hear what the merchants and customers at the Tropicana thought. Since it's only about ten minutes away, I figured talking to these people like some sort of investigative reporter would not only be enlightening, but enjoyable as well. So I headed out for the Tropicana.

I didn't have to work around minutia to get to a pretty clear message. The Mexican community backs the people who own "La Tropicana" as well as those who shop and work there. There's not a lot of affection for the San Jose redevelopment agency and the Blake Hunt company, in fact most people feel that there'll be some hostility felt toward the duo if they succeed. Most of the merchants and shoppers feel that the city needs to give the Tropicana the assistance to modernize the shopping center because Tropicana has worked hard to establish their market share and customer loyalty. The Tropicana is seen as the "heart" of the Mexican Community and most of them cite the plan of redevelopment that was instituted in 17 that was supposedly expected to lean toward owners, merchants, and minorities within East San Jose. I heard the words "Corporate Pirates" when describing Blake Hunt from Manuel Monares, a man who's shopped at the Tropicana for years. Some merchants accused city council members of profiting from the overthrow of the Tropicana ownership personally as well as politically. This is basically an attack upon a minority controlled shopping center, a minority economy and East San Jose on the whole. The City heralds themselves as the champions of eminent domain and blight, but it is merely a way to establish a higher class of citizens that will contribute a higher amount of tax dollars according to Hugo Flores, a man who works at Credit Jewelers. Soon I began to recognize that this Tropicana issue is a symptom of a bigger problem.

The Latino working class doesn't have affordable housing in San Jose, nor does anyone else for that matter. Moreover, who's to say what belongs in this city and what doesn't? These people's homes and livelihoods may be perfectly acceptable to them, and just because it doesn't fit within the cookie cutter framework that the council has in mind doesn't mean it should be absolved. This community, these diverse people are part of a divergence from the norm that makes this community vibrant and rewarding. If that sounds idealistic or utopian, I don't apologize. The city is doing an amputation of culture and replacing it with a prosthetic; a homogeneous corporation that annihilates small business and democratic choice. Many have said they'll boycott the new center, and in my opinion they should.

Well, if one attended a city council meeting last year they would have found a disgusting display. I learned that the only reason that another vote occurred was because some city council members had apparently discussed previously how they would vote privately before they did so publicly. The city's offering $1.6 million for the property and they want to give it to Walnut Creek's Blake Hunt. They voted nine to two and a lot of people came and protested, and in examining the three hour session it is apparent that the city council wasn't too swayed by testimony.

When considering the plight of the Tropicana, it becomes necessary to mull over that the founding fathers had originally wanted to limit government's power in endangering people's rights to use and benefit from their property as they see fit. It is generally viewed that property rights are conferred within the constitution in Article I, Section 10. The framers had initially intended this part of the constitution so that states couldn't stretch the period in which debtors could meet their payments or otherwise get out of contractual responsibility. But in introducing such a constitutional stipulation the framers only had contracts between normal private parties in mind. Yet, Chief Justice John Marshall extended the coverage of the clause to avert states from taking away property privileges of corporations. In effect, the contract clause was used to shelter property and to preserve the status quo at the cost of the state's power.

However, the redevelopment agency contends that the Tropicana issue is a case of eminent domain. According to the constitution's Fifth Amendment, states must fairly compensate the private property owners. This is a limitation on state as well as federal governments as it is the first provision of the Bill of Rights. Many in the Tropicana shopping center contend that this is not an issue of eminent domain in that the taking is not direct and as the original owners of the Tropicana lose title to the city of San Jose, it is being passed on to the Blake Hunt development corporation. In other words, the city is taking private property from one private owner and giving it to another private corporation for "development". So this is more than just a regulatory taking, it seems as if the city is saying, "This shopping center is an eyesore, we're going to take it away from you and give it to an owner who'll develop it and make it more aesthetic, but we'll give you money for it even if you don't want to sell it."

Another issue is what the owners and members of the community feel is just compensation in that the area is not only losing trusted and valued shops, they are also losing an established Latino cultural icon. The issue has become hotly contested as the Blake Hunt development corporation is from an outside city, Walnut Creek, so the local economy won't even reap tax dollars from the corporation's private holdings. Additionally, the Blake Hunt corporation is white owned and operated, and the Hispanic community feels that the Redevelopment Agency is seeking to racially dilute the area and "whiten" it up. Mayor Ron Gonzales has commented on such a prospect as ludicrous, but one has to wonder what exactly the city's motivations are.

One has to consider that the United States Constitution does not support taking private property from one owner so that it will ultimately benefit another private owner. I heard a man say that the financial interests of a few people were superceding the interests of the entire city. I seemed to concur and it looked as if this issue was to be tied up in court for quite a while. It's remarkable how interested I am now in a subject that I knew little about. Hopefully it turns out best for those who need it to most-- the community in East San Jose. It makes a lot more sense for the citizens of the community to vote on the matter rather than the few who stand to benefit, but again, I suppose I sound too idealistic and I should realize that we live in a representative democracy. However, I feel that the constitution should be upheld as the supreme law of the land, regardless of city council aspirations. Time will tell if the tussle over the Tropicana adheres to the constitution and ultimately the community's wishes.
