As politically informed as I would've thought myself to be, I had no idea about the struggle over the Tropicana Shopping Center. I don't really have any excuse for that except that I don't shop there, and I really don't think I'll miss it if it vanishes. But I do have compassion for the people that do rely on the shopping center at King & Story, as it's a forum for their needs in addition to being a staple of their culture. I felt before I became sympathetic to the city or jaded by politicians at the city council meeting, it was necessary for me to hear what the merchants and customers at the Tropicana thought. Since it's only about ten minutes away, I figured talking to these people like some sort of investigative reporter would not only be enlightening, but enjoyable as well. So I headed out for the Tropicana.

I didn't have to work around minutia to get to a pretty clear message. The Mexican community backs the people who own "La Tropicana" as well as those who shop and work there. There's not a lot of affection for the San Jose redevelopment agency and the Blake Hunt company, in fact most people feel that there'll be some hostility felt toward the duo if they succeed. Most of the merchants and shoppers feel that the city needs to give the Tropicana the assistance to modernize the shopping center because Tropicana has worked hard to establish their market share and customer loyalty. The Tropicana is seen as the "heart" of the Mexican Community and most of them cite the plan of redevelopment that was instituted in 17 that was supposedly expected to lean toward owners, merchants, and minorities within East San Jose. I heard the words "Corporate Pirates" when describing Blake Hunt from Manuel Monares, a man who's shopped at the Tropicana for years. Some merchants accused city council members of profiting from the overthrow of the Tropicana ownership personally as well as politically. This is basically an attack upon a minority controlled shopping center, a minority economy and East San Jose on the whole. The City heralds themselves as the champions of eminent domain and blight, but it is merely a way to establish a higher class of citizens that will contribute a higher amount of tax dollars according to Hugo Flores, a man who works at Credit Jewelers. Soon I began to recognize that this Tropicana issue is a symptom of a bigger problem.

The Latino working class doesn't have affordable housing in San Jose, nor does anyone else for that matter. Moreover, who's to say what belongs in this city and what doesn't? These people's homes and livelihoods may be perfectly acceptable to them, and just because it doesn't fit within the cookie cutter framework that the council has in mind doesn't mean it should be absolved. This community, these diverse people are part of a divergence from the norm that makes this community vibrant and rewarding. If that sounds idealistic or utopian, I don't apologize. The city is doing an amputation of culture and replacing it with a prosthetic; a homogeneous corporation that annihilates small business and democratic choice. Many have said they'll boycott the new center, and in my opinion they should.

Well, if one attended a city council meeting last year they would have found a disgusting display. I learned that the only reason that another vote occurred was because some city council members had apparently discussed previously how they would vote privately before they did so publicly. The city's offering $1.6 million for the property and they want to give it to Walnut Creek's Blake Hunt. They voted nine to two and a lot of people came and protested, and in examining the three hour session it is apparent that the city council wasn't too swayed by testimony.

When considering the plight of the Tropicana, it becomes necessary to mull over that the founding fathers had originally wanted to limit government's power in endangering people's rights to use and benefit from their property as they see fit. It is generally viewed that property rights are conferred within the constitution in Article I, Section 10. The framers had initially intended this part of the constitution so that states couldn't stretch the period in which debtors could meet their payments or otherwise get out of contractual responsibility. But in introducing such a constitutional stipulation the framers only had contracts between normal private parties in mind. Yet, Chief Justice John Marshall extended the coverage of the clause to avert states from taking away property privileges of corporations. In effect, the contract clause was used to shelter property and to preserve the status quo at the cost of the state's power.

However, the redevelopment agency contends that the Tropicana issue is a case of eminent domain. According to the constitution's Fifth Amendment, states must fairly compensate the private property owners. This is a limitation on state as well as federal governments as it is the first provision of the Bill of Rights. Many in the Tropicana shopping center contend that this is not an issue of eminent domain in that the taking is not direct and as the original owners of the Tropicana lose title to the city of San Jose, it is being passed on to the Blake Hunt development corporation. In other words, the city is taking private property from one private owner and giving it to another private corporation for "development". So this is more than just a regulatory taking, it seems as if the city is saying, "This shopping center is an eyesore, we're going to take it away from you and give it to an owner who'll develop it and make it more aesthetic, but we'll give you money for it even if you don't want to sell it."

Another issue is what the owners and members of the community feel is just compensation in that the area is not only losing trusted and valued shops, they are also losing an established Latino cultural icon. The issue has become hotly contested as the Blake Hunt development corporation is from an outside city, Walnut Creek, so the local economy won't even reap tax dollars from the corporation's private holdings. Additionally, the Blake Hunt corporation is white owned and operated, and the Hispanic community feels that the Redevelopment Agency is seeking to racially dilute the area and "whiten" it up. Mayor Ron Gonzales has commented on such a prospect as ludicrous, but one has to wonder what exactly the city's motivations are.

One has to consider that the United States Constitution does not support taking private property from one owner so that it will ultimately benefit another private owner. I heard a man say that the financial interests of a few people were superceding the interests of the entire city. I seemed to concur and it looked as if this issue was to be tied up in court for quite a while. It's remarkable how interested I am now in a subject that I knew little about. Hopefully it turns out best for those who need it to most-- the community in East San Jose. It makes a lot more sense for the citizens of the community to vote on the matter rather than the few who stand to benefit, but again, I suppose I sound too idealistic and I should realize that we live in a representative democracy. However, I feel that the constitution should be upheld as the supreme law of the land, regardless of city council aspirations. Time will tell if the tussle over the Tropicana adheres to the constitution and ultimately the community's wishes.

The Yellow Wallpaper

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, â€The Yellow Wallpaper”, is written from a feminist point of view. The story is centered around the protagonist, a woman who suffers from a mental depression following the birth of her baby. Her husband John, a physician, believes she needs to be kept in solitary confinement to ensure her the best recovery. However, being completely isolated and secluded in an upstairs room, ultimately leads to her downfall at the end of the story. What is isolation? Isolation is described as being alone, separated from social contact - perhaps in this case a misguided, inappropriate recovery (due to the time era). Isolation is effectively illustrated in this story through plot, setting, and characterization.

The plot begins in a time era, the 1800’s, when women were considered inferior to men, maybe a contributing factor opposing the woman in the story. We are introduced to a woman who suffers from a mental depression. Her husband John’s profession, being a physician, is to treat illnesses, and he does, in fact, diagnose her with an extreme mental depression. Yet, his treatment for her is â€perhaps the one reason she does not get well faster.” (Gilman, p.46) He does not believe she is sick, but he does believe isolation is the proper treatment. Men in this era were dominant, and women were considered misguided with unacceptable ideas. John sees his wife as a mindless being; however, the reader knows this is not true. John treats his wife as an ordinary, regular patient, rather than someone who is also his significant other. The protagonist suffers from depression, but she is still able to comprehend the things around her. She engages in many requests to enliven her surroundings, but time and time again she is declined by her husband. â€I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs that opened onto the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! But John would not hear of it.” (Gilman, p.47) The treatment prescribed to his wife is from the beliefs of Weir Mitchell. The rest cure - used to calm one down. John’s wife is to remain in a completely relaxed state, refraining from any outside stimulus, perhaps ultimately resulting in an opposite effect. She is so alone, craving interaction with others, that she seeks out companionship from an illusion of a woman in the wallpaper in her room. She even becomes protective of this woman when she catches John and his sister looking at the wallpaper. Afraid that John and Jennie might take away her only friend, she convinces herself that no one will discover this woman, â€but I know she was studying that pattern, and I am determined that nobody shall find it out but myself!” (Gilman, p.54) She feels akin to this woman, who is also trapped, just like herself. Perhaps this illusion is her parallel.

To better understand the imprisonment the protagonist feels, Gilman makes effective descriptions about the setting. â€A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house”, (Gilman, p.446) leaves feelings of loneliness and desolation. To ensure complete isolation of his wife, John keeps her prisoner in a place that is three miles away from town. She is also kept upstairs. All of her days are spent alone in a stark, barren room. Along with â€the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs”, (Gilman, p.48) John nails his wife’s bed to the floor. This does not seem like the appropriate atmosphere one should endure to overcome severe depression. Family members are even forbidden to visit. What else, other than family, would seem better suited to lift one’s spirits? And finally, she is forbidden to write, the one thing left to keep her well-grounded and at peace with herself. To overcome depression, one would think that the opposite of isolation would make promise of a start to recovery - friends, family, outside stimuli, and positive influences would make one want to get better. These descriptions about setting help emphasize the isolation that John’s wife experiences.

The aspect of the story that is most intriguing is the conflict between the two main characters. Despite the fact that they are married, John is the result of the isolation that his wife undergoes. Due to the era of the story, John is a dominating male, one who is labeled with power and superiority. He is a physician with the knowledge and stature of high-class. He is a man that is above and beyond the general public, and most definitely his wife. His wife is only a poor, misguided woman, incapable of making decisions and expressing her own feelings. She is a mindless human being. But is she really? John’s wife bows down to his wishes and is perceived as not having acceptable ideas of her own recovery. But are her ideas really unacceptable? The supposed different level of character creates a sense of isolation and segregation. Had John been on the same level as his wife, he might have been more sympathetic to her and made the proper adjustments better suited to a quick and promising recovery. However, having created an isolated environment for her to live in, only increased the level of isolation for his wife and made their relationship even more distant.

Ultimately, it is the isolation brought upon by John, that brings about his wife’s downfall. We, the readers, know that she was not a mindless human being. With proper care and attention, she may have recovered from her depression, which, however, eventually lead to insanity. Being shut out from society, locked up, and refused to express feelings and ideas would make almost anyone go crazy.

Success, quite a universal word, it can enrich lives and create contentment, though it can also wreck lives and lead to despair. An opportunity to watch someone succeed would be moving, though if one had the chance to help someone succeed, it would be inspirational. One would learn new things from such a relationship. Maybe it's not palpable, but whilst they teach, they are actually learning themselves. The people being referred to as 'they,' are mentors. Mentors are significant in their student's development and growth. A mentor motivates, educates, influences, guides and facilitates their student to succeed. Likewise the students are significant in their mentor's lives; their success affects their mentor because a mentor's success is measured by the corresponding success of their protg.

The definition of a protgin the Collins Dictionary says a protgis a 'person who is protected and helped by another'. The movie 'Finding Forrester' shows the classic scenario of an unlikely mentor relationship, a recluse Pulitzer Prize winner and a young sixteen year old Negro boy. The relationship develops and both of them end up learning and developing from one another. A mentor-student relationship goes both ways. "A friend of mine had the integrity to protect me when I was unwilling to protect him," Forrester talks about his protgJamal. The definition of a protgstated earlier, is turned upside down in this quote, because Jamal is clearly meant to be the protgand Forrester is meant to protect him. See Forrester is a recluse and won't leave his apartment, Jamal helps him to learn to live again and Forrester teaches Jamal to develop his already above standard writing techniques. Forrester protected Jamal and Jamal helped Forrester, both lives were enriched by this fruitful relationship.

Forrester had won a Pulitzer Prize but had nothing, he had stopped living; Jamal was like a son to him (in the end), he helped Forrester to live again, helped him to succeed again. Forrester's success was measured by the corresponding success of Jamal.

Success in the Collins Dictionary is, 'achievement of something attempted,' does this mean being the best? Brilliance, what if it is impossible to be brilliant? But what if one's mentor was brilliant? Would the protgtake it constructively and appreciate the brilliance or would they become jealous and turn their back on their mentor?

In 'Maestro', Paul Crabbe learns the piano from Edward Keller, a Viennese with a shadowed past. Paul's mother and father are talented musicians, but they want Paul to learn from the best, so they send him to Keller. Keller and Paul really don't get on too well to start with, Keller treats Paul like a child taking him back to the raw basics of piano, Paul does not appreciate this at all, and he thought his teacher was a Nazi. Keller gradually over time, opened up to Paul, and the relationship developed and Paul learnt of Keller's terrible past. Meanwhile Paul was trying to be perfect on the piano; Keller was brilliant, all Paul wanted was to be was brilliant. "Don't confuse music with emotion," Keller says to Paul, music is just technical perfection in Keller's words. That is where Paul lost out on becoming brilliant. Paul took it constructively though because it was more than that piano; it was life Keller was teaching him, he was a true mentor to Paul. It was Keller who made him who is was, he was his mentor and was like Paul's second father. Likewise Paul was Keller's adopted family. Paul bought Keller joy and hope, and a reason to keep on living. "I do not tell you this for me, but for you," Keller loved Paul and his music. This is an example of success on both sides, even though it is emotional success. Paul learnt how to be a man and how to appreciate life and Keller learnt how to love again. Keller's success is measured by the corresponding success of Paul.

Teachers can be mentors. Keller was Paul's teacher and mentor. The adult Paul was someone important because Keller was strict with him. He didn't let him do his own thing, even if he played brilliantly to his standards, Keller would still tell him he wasn't that good. Keller told Paul the truth, and strong relationships are based on truthfulness.

Ron Clarke left school with no intention of becoming a teacher. However, he ended up teaching in Harlem. He made it his life long habit to turn his student's lives downside up. "Let me tell you right know, I'm not going to play with you, I'm here to make sure you get the best education possible," Clarke was true to his kids, he taught his students respect, discipline, maturity and helped raise his classes academic scores but most of all a relationship that most children wouldn't experience with their teachers, a mentor relationship. Clarke learnt a new way of life from his students. "It was very hard to get through to these kids, but I just kept at it- and pretty soon they opened up." Mentors can't just give up on their protgs; a mentor protects and helps their protg. Clarke had done this. He is like the ultimate mentor. He gave these children new hope; they also gave him new hope. Teachers can be mentors; students can also indirectly influence their teachers too. Clarke's success was to teach the children, the student's success was to be given hope and a chance for an education and a better life. Clarke's success is measured by the corresponding success of his students.

Mentors definitely learn from their students. The movie 'Good Will Hunting,' is a story about a kid from the other side of the train tracks, an abused orphan with a violent personality yet he was a genius. This is the story of Will Hunting; he was given to chance to be somebody, to succeed in life. He solved mathematical problems that took two years to prove in one night, he is a genius. Though because of his past he doesn't let anyone get close to him besides his best friend Chucky and his mates. Will is discovered solving the problems (he was a janitor in the math's building of the university) and the math's professor Jerry takes him under his wing. Will had to go to counseling because of probationary requirements; Jerry takes him to Sean (Jerry's old school friend). The first meeting doesn't go that well, Will gets Sean's emotions going. But Sean perseveres with the boy and they both end up learning from each other. Sean learns how to live again and Will learns that he is someone special and he has to move on with his life. Sean is Wills mentor; both of them have a common past. Mentors should be able to relate to their protg's. Sean's success is measured by the corresponding success of Will Hunting.

From all the different examples presented above there was a mutual benefit gained from the relationships. The relationships had depth; the individuals didn't give up when times were testing. This commitment to one another was rewarded with mutual accomplishment and respect. The mentors allowed a safe haven for the student to grow and success was the result. Although the intention of a mentor is not their own success, the consequence of their commitment to their protgand their resultant success lead to the corresponding success of the mentor.

Why are some organizations adopting a technological innovation that is announced to yield both operational and strategic benefits while others hesitate, or decide not to adopt for the time being? This question is highly relevant especially in the case of interorganizational information systems (IOS) exemplified by EDI (electronic data interchange), due to the earnest attention this particular technology had received throughout the 10s from academia, practitioners, and governments all over the world. Surprisingly few Danish organizations have adopted EDI. If their technical capabilities and their high degree of computerization are considered then the organizations reluctance to adopt EDI appears to be even more irrational and incomprehensible. The phenomenon of organizations lagging behind adoption of IT regardless of their opportunities to do so is well known. What is missing so far are factors explaining the reason for this situation.

Throughout the history of IS research a number of explanatory factors have been found to be prevalent in relation to adoption and diffusion of IT in and among organizations. A summary of an extensive review of the literature on IOS and EDI and adoption and diffusion of IOS and EDI has resulted in a number of possible explanatory factors and models for adoption. One of these models comprises factors related to the organizational context, the environmental context, and the technological context. These three contexts or dimensions are the pivotal point for this study on adoption and diffusion of IOS in a Danish setting. Inherent in the three contexts is for example the influence on organizations from environmental factors such as action plans promoted by governmental institutions or by industry and trade associations and competitive market forces. From an internal point of view, the motivators for adoption of innovations in organizations focus on the operational benefits and human resources. Finally, the influence from innovation attributes related to the technology aspects is comprised in the third context.

This study is a longitudinal evaluation of the outcome of the Danish national 16-action plan for e-commerce. The reported data originate from more than half a decade starting with the political 15-statements, which gave a high priority to the use of information technology in businesses and administration. The 15-statement stressed the need for formulating an action plan for EDI and e-commerce. The next step was the launch of the 16-action plan for EDI and e-commerce. This action plan was operationalized in the TDP (TradeDocument Project) by the two major Danish business associations. The TDP which aimed at supporting the adoption and diffusion of EDI included nine companies, manufactures and wholesalers, in the Danish steel and machinery industry. As a part of this analysis of the impact of co-ordinated adoption and diffusion projects the outcome of TDP was evaluated during the autumn of 1. Based on the knowledge gained from the TDP, from previous research on IS adoption, and from EDI research in the 10s a survey instrument was developed to evaluate the status of the use of EDI (and e-commerce) in a business sector, which had been exposed to the 16-action plan and the TDP.

This study, which was practice driven in nature, started as an exploratory search for motivators for EDI adoption. The exploratory approach led to changes in focus of the fieldwork throughout the study. The first step, examination of the TDP, revealed that a number of factors had influenced adoption and non-adoption amongst the participating companies. The industry and trade associations, which initiated the project, expected that the TDP provided the optimal conditions for adoption and diffusion of EDI in the Danish steel and machinery industry and especially amongst the companies involved in the project. However, the interviews with the involved companies indicated that some of the participants had their own agendas. They were more interested in networking and exerting influence. The non-adopters were interested in obtaining knowledge of EDI. However, they remained non-adopters due to organizational constraints. After examining the influence of the co-ordinated adoption and diffusion initiatives, it was found prudent to focus more intensely on motivators for adoption. Based on the general attitude from governmental units and the industry and trade associations, specific knowledge from the TDP, and data from previous research, fifteen opinion data items covering a range of issues related to the organizational context, the environmental context, and the technological context were defined. These items were tested in a survey of the Danish steel and machinery industry.

Two objectives have guided this research, which explicitly answers the following three research questions

Objective A - To consider possible improvements of the present adoption models used in MIS research.

The corresponding research questions related to this objective were

- How are the explanatory variables related to motivators for EDI adoption defined in MIS research at present?

- Which models are used to explain motivation for IOS adoption at present?

Objective B - To identify motivators for adoption of IOS in a business sector dominated by small businesses.

The corresponding research question related to this objective was

- To which degree can the motivation to adopt IOS, exemplified by EDI, be explained by issues related to the organizational context, the environmental context, and the technological context?
