The Great Gatsby

As soon as Nick Carraway introduces himself in the first chapter of the book, he makes it clear to the reader what kind of a person he perceives himself as. He tells us, "I'm inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores". Later in Chapter III he tells us, "Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known". These comments allow the reader to know what kind of narrator the story will be revealed by. However, despite the narrator's assurance of his qualities, the fact that he is so aware of them should leave the reader wondering how accurate the narrator's perceptions of himself are.

Although Nick may make a better narrator for the story of Gatsby's downfall than the other characters, one cannot deny that he may not be completely reliable. Anyone that is personally involved in a story like this cannot avoid judgment of one kind or another. Even though Nick claims to "reserve all judgments", it is obvious throughout the book that he possesses certain attitudes towards those involved. Some of these attitudes change throughout the book as certain characters are more deeply revealed. It is impossible for these revelations to have no affect on how the narrator views the events that occur throughout the story.

One of the most obvious attitudes Nick conveys is how he feels towards Tom Buchanan. The reader comes away with the knowledge that Nick did not approve of Tom for several reasons. This is proved when Nick runs into Tom months after Gatsby's death and confirms what he believed all along, that Tom informed Wilson that Gatsby owned the yellow car. Nick admits, "I couldn't forgive him or like him but I saw that what he had done was, to him, entirely justified…They were careless people, Tom and Daisy". Although this revelation is not reached until the end of the book, the gradual realization of his attitude caused Nick to influence his opinion of Tom and Daisy prior to his meeting with Tom.

Despite the fact that Nick could not completely conceal his feelings toward certain characters, he was not entirely unreliable. At the end of the book, Nick reveals to the reader that he considered himself one of Gatsby's closest friends. Although it was clear that Nick did not approve or understand much about Gatsby, he still confirms the bond he shared with him. One would think that this bond would leave Nick biased towards Gatsby. However, even though Nick could realize the reasons of why Gatsby acted as he did, he was able to see the error in Gatsby's thinking, leading the readers to a reliable conclusion of what brought on Gatsby's tragic death.
